Going out on a limb here, but should be a law in Montana that exPat Californians cannot sit on HOA boards unless they have lived fulltime for 10 years in Montana.

Not sure that would fly, but a good idea!

As a Montana resident for 10 years and a former California resident I completely agree. I escaped CA and now find Montana is becoming less like where I moved to and move like where I escaped from. The HOAs are unbelievably expensive in Montana.

I was under a HOA years ago. The HOA president was a real dandy thought he was a neighborhood cop. It could have been a nice place to stay. The actual HOA was good for the covered items but it takes just one to ruin neighborhood! Thanks for sharing this information.

Typically, individuals are not compelled to reside in a location governed by a HOA.

How would you manage a multi-unit building without an HOA?
      1. Eliminate multiple ownership of a building? Only permitting company ownership of apartments building.
      2. Have the government manage the building?
      3. Tell me your solution.
What do the H and O in HOA stand for?
Owners must take responsibility of ownership. That simple.

Why? They willingly sign the contract when they buy. Legal.
Maybe people should hold them selves accountable for signing a contract.

There are two-level HOA condos in Myrtle Beach SC that are full ghetto for the entire property. I'm not even playing. You would swear it was a government housing project for low-income families, but the thing is, the HOA fees are like $1,000 a month. They do zero maintenance, nothing. The condos still sell.

Did an HOA just “disappear” a car they didn’t approve of at 2:52? 😂

Im currently having to seriously consider buying a new home right after I recently closed this spring because the HOA has been so bad.
Never again will I consider HOA. Even if it keeps property values up, it's not worth the extra stress and money that comes with it, especially if I'm trying to find my forever home that I don't intend to sell.

Some years ago, we lived in a single family neighborhood in Summerville South Carolina, near Charleston. It had no HOA because a homeowner had sued, leading to the dissolution of the previous HOA. No idea what the issues were.

So similar to experiences we have had here in PA. How about the need for major repairs and upgrades to the dam in our community! That is a huge and ongoing expense that we never expected when we moved here. Be careful!

Can you remember the % voting division ? Our problem is GPS maps send drivers down our no-through road , yet it's not a through road to where they think it's going . I leave the wheel-bin at the entrance , which makes most of them think and turn around . A few drive up even though it's obvious it's only leading to my tractor !

I live in an HOA in Colorado. We have issues with a resident who thinks he is an attorney. He is saying that because our covenants say no rentals, it may not mean all rentals. He is trying to interpret it to mean he can rent. I told him, “no means no”.

We live in a HOA now. But the only 2 rules are that the house must be 1500 sq ft including the garage and the out buildings must look like your house.
We had to create the HOA because the 9 families who live on our private road own 1/2 of a private mountain here in north central Washington state. We don’t have to pay taxes on the mountain.
All of our houses are custom built and the smallest one is 1600 sq ft not including the garage.
We could care less if an out building looks like the house.
We Don’t pay dues. We all chip in to plowing the 5-7 feet off our private road and when we had it chip sealed all of us paid for our share from property line to property line.
We’re 5 miles from town and had to form the HOA to appease the state and county.

My daughter's HOA in Florida gave tickets to her husband for having magnetic signs on his work truck advertising his business. The tickets were for around $150. You are talking about a manufactured home community. Had to remove the signs.

The sad irony about a rogue HOA, is that if they break the law and they get sued, the HOA members pay their legal expenses.

My development in WA could not install a gate because the fire dept did not want to deal with it when they make a call. It seems a gate with remote operation wouldn't be a problem.. If the FD could also open it. But people drawn to HOA boards are often mini tyrants.

Show what ( insert HOA presidents name ) did.
If you were lucky they would have fined him, and guarantee he would never pull that stunt again.

When it comes to having a private lake, it is good policy to befriend the neighbors, especially if the trout are as large as in the waters we create. The neighbors make better watch dogs than they do poachers ;)

Naw, can't top that. Am familiar with the neighborhood cop tho. Say, why are they always the real old codgers who remind you of your dad when he was going thru his, "My way or the hiway," stage. For every ticket I got for parking greater than 10" from the curb (x2), I know he got a deflated tire. Bad blood. His wife was a super nice lady tho, just as neighborly and kind as all get out.

Will - My opinion is that both HOA Presidents and U.S. Presidents are drawn to the position because of power. Some Presidents abuse power and do what they want because they incorrectly and arrogantly think they're smarter than the deplorable masses. Other Presidents are motivated to serve primarily as a common-sense alternative to the abusive President and sincerely want to do good. Over the last 4 years, I've been subject to both a rogue HOA President, and Board, and an absolutely pathetic U.S. President. It's past time for the silent majority to get out and vote. If you're reading this, please vote. Thank you.
