My first gig was a jam session infront of atleast 200 people and it went great. The second one was a concert with my band infront of 25 and we suuuuucked
Live is easier than doing studio takes because doing studio takes forever and turn me into a perfectionist who won't accept any of his own takes. Live is great because I can just get through it, reflect on how well I did, and learn from it to do better next time. Ironically I also don't have the same nerves that infuriate me when I try to do studio stuff
Thank you so much, I’m a teen doing an internship as a sound person for a local bar, thank you for helping me brush up on my overall knowledge of the equipment around me before I start!
I am one of those lucky people that don’t get nervous. Headlining in front of 500 people and it just seems normal to me. That said, I’m the drummer so the focus isn’t on me too much.
Otto Mercer thank god for band class in school, you get to learn to play in front of 300 people with a safety net of other players. It's how I got over it.
... Ideal, but only of you are loaded in cash. I’ve been playing live for 12 years. In reality, you need to learn to be a good live performer before having awesome equipment. This is the real scenario... You come in to a bar, and you brought you own stuff, but then the owner tells you, noooo! Use my equipment. Then you look at it a go, “oh gosh why!?”, but you agree, because they’re paying for your performance. Then you start sound checking and it sounds awful, you have no wifi signal, no bass frequency and a very distorted sound, “What do you do!?”. You tune your stuff, put a smile on your face, make sure you know your songs, make sure you have everything organized, and stat playing!! That’s what you do. Having awesome equipment wont lower your stage fright, playing... playing as much as you can will. Playin pubs, bars, birthday gigs, even in front of family(they are the worst). The point is, good equipment wont make you a good performer, practice and exposure will.
Truth, but I don't think one takes priority over the other. I full expect a pro band to have pro gear AND be confident performers. I wouldn't give a pass on either one.
Yeah PA and sound equipment gets idiotically expensive compared to everything else IMO. I just go play open mics with little gear and I get used to how I sound. It's truly a pain in the neck because I rarely can hear myself but people say I'm doing a good job so I guess it works out
Nicely said!! Yea when you think about how expensive gear is and how much gigs pay most of the time you’ll probably be in the whole if your not playing every day and getting paid lol. Your so right you want to be a great performer that makes it with what they have. Thanks for your comment it was very encouraging for me☺️
We're always in rooms small enough that overheads aren't needed, but I set them up anyway and only run them into our ears. I find that they really open up the mix in our ears and keep it from feeling claustrophobic. Plus it kinda helps if someone walks up to you to talk to you with room noise.
Wow, was literally just doing research on gigging amps last night before bed cause I want to start playing out! It's like you read my mind! Loving VIP, have a kickass day my friend!
I am a retired Road Dog of 40+ years and the bottom line is if YOU are not prepared EVERY night no amount of equipment will get it. Over these decades I have had the power go out 4 times, and had to sit in the middle of a barroom full of patrons and entertain them for the final 2 hours, no toys, no pa, just acoustic instruments and a snare drum......if you are not ready to do something like this comfortable, then YOU need more practice, not gear.....
what the best way to book gigs? I have done a lot of performances in my life and i still haven't decided the best way to book. I hate pay to play and presale ticket scams. I used to get booked a lot when my rap duo still existed and that was due to our popularity. is an agent useful? a manager? who can you trust?
I'm a touring musician and I use the EW 900 dollar in ear monitors. Greatest thing I ever got. I tried some that was 100 bucks and it was mono and sucked. I have the X32 mixer. I use my tablet or ipad and mix it.
If you're in a worship band and looking for ideas, a set up that I run at my church is Nexo PA (not sure which line), DiGiCi SD9 mixer w/ Waves server (to run waves plugins), Shure Axient wireless (instrument packs, microphones), Shure PSM 1000's for ears, microphones for vocals Shure AD2/K9HSB.
Haha. I know not everyone can afford that stuff but a lot of people can afford to do the same concept for cheaper. For instance, Midas M32 running waves multirack on a computer, etc..
Thank you man for sharing this videos! Can you record something about live mixing, when you come in some bar and sound check, how to setup PA and other tricks and tips?
Came in thinking I needed one or two more pieces of gear, not too pricy either...left realizing it will cost another couple grand for the speakers I need. Lovely
Hey man, I own a Fender Mustang GT40. I had bought it because it seemed like a nice option to discover my sound without spending tremendous amounts of money for pedals. However, I’ve recently started to perform live as well and I could really use and advice on live performance equipments on a budget. Thanks!
Can you help me out. I got a phone n got my autotune software on that. I want to speak through a mic which plays through a speaker 🔊 so everyone can hear/ also no lag between Bluetooth audio. As if I was performing on stage like these rappers. Do u know how I can pattern that
Dear sir Ques is out of the context but necessary can we use izotop tonal balance for separate tracks like solo vocal frequency balance .kindly answer.
I have been looking at the Behringer x Air 18 to use both live and studio. In taking a recording class they of course poop poop on anything Behringer. They said that I need speed at least $1000 to get an interface that is good. What do you think?
But stage volume is so fun! The drums and bass pounding in your chest, it's a great feeling. Of course wear ear protection, don't be an idiot, but no stage volume kinda kills the vibe as the musician. Also playing to a click has to kill the vibe. I saw Protest The Hero a few weeks ago and they did play to a click since they had a lot of overdubs for the set they were playing. As good as they were, it was basically on par with the last time I saw them where they weren't playing to a click. You have more freedom without a click and natural things can happen that wouldn't with a click. Yeah playing to a click sounds cleaner but does it actually sound better? When you're just enjoying the show you don't notice, if the musicians are good enough to keep time.
The most worrying part for me is the gear and what to use, what to look for and the know how. I've played live multiple times nothing special but mostly in college and everything was set up for me. Not knowing what to do is pretty much what's holding me back going further with a band. I love the idea of being in a performing band. I've never had experience using pedals, setting up equipment for a live show and all that stuff. All I know really know is plug the guitar into the amp 😂 it's embarrassing saying this but I'm hoping someone will advise me. It just seems so mind boggling despite the fact so many people do it. I keep saying I'll learn as I go and actually start performing but I'd like to atleast have an idea beforehand. In ear monitors, PA etc. Not wanting anything special, like I say I have really no experience with pedals or setting up, just bedroom or rehearsals. I'd like to get to a stage where I know what I'm doing and got the things that are right and what's best with me so I can atleast be comfortable. I'm aware it won't always be perfect but you know. If anyone's got any advice I'd appreciate it greatly.... as common sense as it may be. Cheers:)
Is it bad that I don’t really see myself on the stage in the future? I do have a little experience, but like, do I have to go and play live, or else everything i worked for drops to the floor?
Thanks for the video. I have a 5 piece rock band. Our gigs will probably be in and outdoors and probably max out at 200-250 people. Do you know a good setup for this? I was thinking of getting 2 Ev50s (2 12" subs with an array at top of each sub) and add an additional 18" sub later. Do you think that would be sufficient?
I've been thinking on getting some sort of in-ear monitors for a while now. I hate it when playing live and not being able to hear myself fine or intermittently, but I never knew that was a thing until now. I was considering getting a return of my own sound directly to one of my ears, and leave the other for the rest of the band. How about that?
In a thrash metal band we dont have a pa system we have 500 dollars, a drumset, 2 guitars, a bass and mic. These guitars are all plugged into 50 dollar Amps. What are the literally bare essentials to play live. We've played gigs with our crap equipment and 500 is all I could scrough up. What do I buy that will be the most beneficial
Awsome vid. Just one little optinion: there's too much promotion between the lines... If u encapsulate all the cool content in ~50% of the time, I'd binge watch everything... But often I just quit in the middle. Hope u get this the right way. Keep rocking!
I would not call this minimum. In- ear monitors are definitely not standard for most bar/local bands. Also most places will have DIs for you to use likely - Keyboard players should have one. Vocalists and guitar players? Not really, especially if you're first starting out and have no budget.
I expected to see you play something on stage as per he thumbnail but her I stand disappointed. Would love to see a video of you doing praise and worship one day !!!
Inears sound soo much worse. I will take the clunky monitors until I die. Ive used both a ton, but I just hate the in ear sound. So squished. I have some fancy inears too. I was all into it at one point, but it never sounds nearly as nice as the open sound from standard monitors.
I understand that you enjoy presonus, and there's nothing wrong for that. But, if I were to recommend equipment to anyone, presonus would be my absolute last recommendation possible. There are plenty of other options, which are way nicer, and the same price if not less.
Hi,If you know the words and chords you win and if you write and play your own Original music. I am not a musician at all and don’t want to be, I have my own rhythm and there’s nothing right about it and it’s nothing wrong about it ,it’s mine and only mine it’s called a HYBRID rhythm and I doubt anyone can play it.70 yrs old I have written and played 8 Originals no one else on earth has these pure lyrics.my music is about living, playing, learning and loving the AFTERLIFE.MY EXPERIENCES I CAPTURED AND WROTE what I seen within their reality…..Step In My Friends..At The Table…Love Is The Key…My 3rd Eye…On The Deck…The Maple Tree…When I Play…Out Front …plugged and just me and the guitar unplugged. I am no musician just goodtime player.
WASTE OF TIME. If you're serious about wanting to learn to be a gigging musician and put on great shows, try other more capable and informative sources. The more people there are in the audience, the more I am at ease. I freak out a little when the crowd is sparse.
Same
Wow, this is such a strange effect, why do you think it's like that? Just more focus on the individuals?
My first gig was a jam session infront of atleast 200 people and it went great.
The second one was a concert with my band infront of 25 and we suuuuucked
That has _always_ been my experience as well!
That’s facts
anyone else more nervous in front of people you know than a huge crowd of strangers?
Yes! I can not play in front of my family but i feel very comfortable when playing for anyone else.
can you use pro tools how you use abelton live for djing live performances?
Mostly definitely!!
Yeah I don't mind strangers. People I know is way different
Always 😎

Amen 😎
I love playing live! Recording is WORK!
Play? or Work? I Play 😎

Yh I once I start drumming it’s just me and the drums idc who’s listening

I have passively watched your videos for years. Always have enjoyed your perspective on recording. Recording Revolution VIP here I come!

YES, Looking out at a gig and seeing ton's of friends is like playing "Fire and Rain" in front of James Taylor. You are not alone.
Wow, was literally just doing research on gigging amps last night before bed cause I want to start playing out! It's like you read my mind!
Loving VIP, have a kickass day my friend!
We use the same mixer at our church! We love it so much.
Thank you for serving Jesus and serving me through what you're sharing. Thx.
Watching this on my TV. Dude, the pupils are wicked.

Wise words! True of all music genres!
GREAT Job explaining how to put a live rig together! Thank You.

Nice, I'm playing in a worship band to😍💪🏻
Amazing video Graham. Thanks for sharing this sneak peak with us.
I'm a touring musician and I use the EW 900 dollar in ear monitors. Greatest thing I ever got. I tried some that was 100 bucks and it was mono and sucked. I have the X32 mixer. I use my tablet or ipad and mix it.

What can you recommend for voice or microphone processor to make it sounds like recorded song
Yeah sure here start out with this $250,000 rig.
Haha. I know not everyone can afford that stuff but a lot of people can afford to do the same concept for cheaper. For instance, Midas M32 running waves multirack on a computer, etc..
11:59 "We don't even have a Snake anymore." Let me guess, it bit you
Great information! Thanks again Graham
Thank you man for sharing this videos! Can you record something about live mixing, when you come in some bar and sound check, how to setup PA and other tricks and tips?
Very helpful thank you so much for the education 🙏🏻

Yeah thats a nice car man
Sooooo wanntedddd thissss videoooo💛
You’re an amazing producer!
I love you brother! 💯🔥
How would you even use in ear monitors if you don’t have your own mixer to run them off of and wouldn’t you need a whole iem system?
XR series mixers are amazing. I’ve got the “12”. Can’t go wrong.
What band are you in? Can I see you perform?
This video was really helpful thanks so much for all the info
What is a ground lift switch and what is it for ???
When do you have to use it ?
Great just what I need it, what about amplification for the PA.
can you use pro tools how you use abelton live for djing live performances?

Don't use autotune
Helpfull video, thank you!
Can i replace the mixer with an audio interface like Behringer UMC1820 and having the mixing and affects addition from DAW in my laptop?
Very Good God bless you
Dear sir Ques is out of the context but necessary can we use izotop tonal balance for separate tracks like solo vocal frequency balance .kindly answer.
I am so lucky...I have never ever had any anxiety or fear to play live. In fact, it's the only thing in my life that hasn't given me anxiety.
Can some list the equipment here ?
Does the Behringer X-Air send multiple (8) tracks to the computer or just the stereo mains?

More than sufficient.
Consider 1w bare minimum per person. For dance floor, consider 10-30w each per person.
But how do i go on stage for live performance.
It's never easy... But it sure is fun!!!
Cool! Nice extension of your channel.
I've been thinking on getting some sort of in-ear monitors for a while now. I hate it when playing live and not being able to hear myself fine or intermittently, but I never knew that was a thing until now.

Hallo. So I was looking for your first video and I find. 8 years
It can take time to build an audience and community, same can go with making music itself!
Great info, thanks for making this video :)
What you need: drums, guitar, bass, mics, amps, stands, PA system.
Mixer
So much expensive equipment ...and it is so hard to make it in the music business nowadays. 😥
DIY is cheaper. FAR CHEAPER! Just get reliable components from reputed brands. That's all that matters. It's just like building own PC.
Let us hear your band Graham, is that anything on Spotify?
Awsome vid. Just one little optinion: there's too much promotion between the lines... If u encapsulate all the cool content in ~50% of the time, I'd binge watch everything... But often I just quit in the middle. Hope u get this the right way. Keep rocking!
Yes!!!!💯💯💯💯💯 waaaaay too much talking!!!! 🥴
I couldn't sign up to your site??? How do I do it?
An extricate guitar. Guitar cable.
Extension chord. Tuner. Maybe apedal board.
Its all you need. The rest is overkill.
what band you you in
Cool content. You should do an entire video of you talking while cycling.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Great! A free month! ..... Wait ... it's ended! Thanks, maaaate.
I love my own amp sound but '
, for quick switch over most venues make you use a house amp :(
Talk less and come to the point fast.
Shut the fuck up he’s teaching you
Borah fuck off
I think clicktracks and metronomes have helped kill rock. Why not use skill to stay in time? For me it kills the edge.
Are you in a worship band?
Yep
Pls try to add time stamps to your video . ESP the ones you talking a lot
this is not what you need, this is the best shit you can get. I want to know the minimum stuff not the digital wifi bullshit
Anyone notice his eye's iris?
I think that's the circle light used for better lighting in videos, kept behind the camera
Inears sound soo much worse. I will take the clunky monitors until I die. Ive used both a ton, but I just hate the in ear sound. So squished. I have some fancy inears too. I was all into it at one point, but it never sounds nearly as nice as the open sound from standard monitors.
I don't even standing on stage, but this video gives me anxiety
Why do. You need subs, like legitimate question.
I understand that you enjoy presonus, and there's nothing wrong for that. But, if I were to recommend equipment to anyone, presonus would be my absolute last recommendation possible. There are plenty of other options, which are way nicer, and the same price if not less.
249 for a mixer ? At walmart ? ;)

Wow 👍
What's going on with his eye balls??
Why don't you say tablets and smartphones? You know ipad/iphone is just one of dozens of brands available, right?
Lol
