We devise a...creative... solution to dispose of the attic contents, and then set our sights on the basement. Along the way, I take time to answer questions about the home's history, and shares my thoughts about its possible past lives. Of course no one needs to know and I completely understand why you’d keep that info private but you are in Nova Scotia. Every Nova Scotian who sees this is going to wonder exactly where you are and if they can help out in some way. You are a newcomer to the area and we tend to reach out. I’ll be shocked if you don’t get asked this question repeatedly. It wouldn’t even occur to lots of small town Nova Scotians that revealing your location could put you in harms way.
Go to City Hall for land surveys, tax records, deeds, wills, etc. Building permits alone can tell quite a story.

Absolutely! Most of the time permits are public so you should be able to find information there and tax records will also give a lot of information especially if an attic was added.
I would like to add a county museum and archive. We have these in rural Ontario and it helped us understand the waves of settlers in our area.

Please use the respirator in the basement too! The dampness can harbor mold and you don’t want to be breathing that either! Look at your skin… that is coating your lungs too! Be careful… old houses and dust is nothing to fool around with-and you don’t want to find out too late!

The insulation usually is fiberglass. Once in the lungs it sticks into the walls.
My house was built in 1917. The year that it was going to turn 100 years old, I decided to give it to a birthday party.‼️‼️‼️‼️🎂 I actually read over my abstract which detailed from the beginning who had purchased the land then built the house and who lived in it and from there that’s when I contacted the people that were still alive. Had them send me pictures when they lived in my house, put the history and the pictures of everyone that had lived in my home into a booklet, and of course, gave them a booklet and of course, invited them to the birthday party😁 everyone enjoyed coming back home and walking through the house reminiscing when they were building their family! It brought great joy to me!
That is the sweetest and coolest thing to do! Love that past residents were able to visit and I’m sure make the house feel more like a home from hearing about the life of the house.

I am happy to have the story unfold over time. It's more fun to look forward to updates and episodes than just a huge information dump. Keep your privacy sacred. We don't need to know everything.
The local historical society will likely have lots of info about your neighbourhood and your house. It's such a fine house, I am betting that some prominent citizens lived there. Old newspapers will have loads of photos too. Local people will be happy to help you find out about the history of the home because you are saving it. Have fun!!!

Yes - local historical society. Smaller towns in NS often have them - often as part of the library. (lol) If not in your location, there is probably one nearby that covers the county.
Was also coming here to ask whether there is a local history society 😊
The one here actually posts a historic photograph in the local newspaper every month or so, to ask locals if they recognise any of the people/buildings/etc pictured and add to the archives 😊

When you bought the house there was a title search done by the title company. They will have all of the history in the Folio in the public records from the origin of the house . Good luck!

Value village isn't cheap anymore! Personally, I seem to find less and less there. Their staff must go thru it first and choose what they want...
Same with smaller stores, I know! But with smaller ones there are usually more gems (for cheaper) 😊 Less staff to take them potentially imo!
May I also suggest liquidation stores? There's this store called Quick Pick in my city. Something like that.

it's a small town Nova Scotia, go to the local coffee shop or corner store and talk to ppl. In my experience, a lot of the older folk know everyone. Also, small-town libraries in NS can borrow for the bigger Libraries depending on where you are, but the Librarians are generally super helpful
Inner Library Loan programs are epic!
Unfortunately I have the sinking feeling that some of the documents this old might be the type that aren't transported from library to library, but I could be wrong, and it's worth looking into!!
Documents such as deeds,marriage,death and birth certificates as well as newspapers are often stored on microfilm or microfiche. If the library does not have them then the local or rather regional Historical Society might. Keep in mind that a local college or university library may be the repository for these micro films or microfiche.
We learned a ton about our house just by living in it. Once we visited with the locals, the stories started coming. I learned that it was moved from the bottom of the hill to the top via logs and a farm tractor😮, and that it was the first house on the road to get electricity and indoor plumbing. It’s been fun hearing the stories. Going to take a metal detector down to the old foundation spot when it warms up.
Is it a weird suggestion to use the metal detector on all of your property?
(To find treasures mostly but also just to know what's down there!)

Love habitat for humanity, they do such wonderful work, and are an amazing source when you are doing home repairs on a budget. Friend of mine bought a house for five thousand dollars, it had been abandoned for six years, broken into, was in bad shape. I took him to the habitat for humanity restore, and he was shocked, he saved so much money on stuff for his bathroom and kitchen, and all the drywall he needed, lol You do have to revisit, because as you said, the inventory changes, but so worth it, and it helps them build houses for people.... win/win. Watching you and Phil work together, building your beautiful home is lovely, thanks for sharing. Best wishes on this adventure.

A good idea is to get a kit so you can check for lead in china glazes and crystal, to make sure what you can use or just display.
I got one on eBay recently for checking vintage pewter that I want to use for reenactment. Not expensive and looks like it'll be really easy to use, when I get it all out of storage 😀

I think that the speakeasy idea is fun. Regardless of what you do to the attic, a speakeasy entrance would be the chef’s kiss.
we had a hotel on tour that had a speakeasy bar attached, and they had a secret entrance to it, and it was super cool!
The apple pealer always brings my heart joy. My grandma made THE BEST apple pies so, for the holiday family gatherings we would be pealing apples days before. My grandpa came in one day and set down this wacky contraption and we laughed so hard. ❤ I hope Grandma will have some pies ready for me when I get to Heaven.

The library is a great place to start looking for information on your home! I'm a librarian and I love helping patrons with questions like this. I would see if there is a reference librarian you can email at the Halifax library or your local library. If there is a local history club or genealogy group, they could be great to reach out to as well.
Also, It may be worth seeing if your library has a tool lending program. Could be really helpful for future projects!

My local library is pretty small but it has a cake pan lending program! It's always worth checking!

it's amazing, but tl,dr consult with an architect because books are heavier than you think
Now the story:
I have a friend who's a book aficionado. I mean, he buys a lot of books, has a nice spreadsheet for all of them but he runs out of shelves so his room is part shelves - part floor-sitting stacks of books. When visited by an architect friend the friend said "you know that when you're making a house project you should tell your architect when you're planning the library, so they can reinforce the joists, otherwise the books might be too heavy and cause structural problems".
Of course he's god a loooooot of books. So that totally depends, but if you're planning floor-to-ceiling wonderful bookshelves full of actual books not foam props you might want to check twice :D
We have a roomful of vinyl albums. The load bearing walls are important.
In the US the Fire Insurance companies would make maps of all the houses cities. Lots of times they are digitized by local historians. I have renovated several old houses and I love watching y’all tackling this project!

My husband and I laughed when we saw the apple peeler/corer! We call them "apple death machines". It's indispensable when making pies! Highly recommend lol. So fun to be on this house journey with you!
I inherited a spiralizer attachment for an also-inherited Kitchen Aid mixer and it has a peeler/slicer function for apples.

They're great dogs, but they need a TON of exercise and training or else they can be very troublesome (like many dog breeds, but ppl get corgis because they're small and cute, and think they can treat them like other tiny dog breeds, but these are working dogs, so they really need to be kept occupied.... I could write a whole novel on this, but I shall restrain myself lol)

Making progress, such an adventure! I totally agree I definitely would not put my address, city, where I live, not a good idea.
I don’t know what’s available in Canada, but searching property records online helped me. I was able to see things like previous property surveys, things like when the public path was put through my side yard, and even aerial surveys from when they were planning to pave the roads back in the 50s. I was also able to find the names of the previous owners. I searched for them in the local newspaper archives but didn’t find anything.

Courthouse and Library. That is what I did. Even though the courthouse had burnt they knew a lot about my house and the family. The library had original pictures and stories to tell.
if there is a town historical society, they could help dig up the history of the house. And the city hall records search suggestion that was made is also good.

Shannon- I love all the suggestions about how to find the house's history- but I further suggest ads in the local newspapers (shouldnt cost much) and any social media sites of local origin. And, talk to people in your little community! 😊
If you’d like to know the former owners, why don’t you do an historical land titles search? You can also look for old “fire maps” and old directories. The local library should have the last two.

About the history of the place, I'd also say Town hall, and maybe see if there's a notary around. They might have some pointers.
When you talked about the attic, I suddenly had a vision of a tea parlor (kind of like Cardinal on St-Laurent street) with a piano and Schubertiade-type concerts.

Do you have an abstract? Starts with who originally bought the land, built the house, who bought it as time went on. Yo could then research people through genealogy through the local library, old tax rolls etc. And btw...I'm totally in love with your doggo! Adorable ❤❤❤ lol, now that's a real shop vac, looks big enough to work for you and still be manageable to dump. This is so much fun!

Local historical society, Census information, and not sure if Canada has done this, but in Australia, all the old newspapers have been uploaded online where you can search and read old newspaper articles.

Go to the local church for info on the house and the people who lived there. Also the census can help with who was loving there and when.
In the USA when we bought our house similar to yours there was a lot of information in the Title including everyone who had owned it in the past.

Is there some form of land registry there? Here in the UK we have that which opens up the history of the site, along with former owners. It does cost a bit though.
I love the idea of the attic being turned into a multi-use space. A snug library-come-craft room sounds heavenly. While you’re waiting to put in skylights (yeah that sounds so good!) some daylight lamps could be a decent interim solution. The space will evolve with use anyway, I guess! (But definitely a few big pouffy beanbags would not go amiss! 😂 )

You can search the titles of Property on line in Nova Scotia last time I had occasion to do it. It would be fun to find pictures of the streets back in the day.

I would love to have a huge attic to turn into a library ❤. I’m sure that is a long way in the future though … so much else to do first. In the meantime though keep your eyes open for people tossing out book cases and grab all you can! I would probably also use the attic for my fabric stash if I had that much space. Bench sized boxes with a cushion on top will store a lot of fabric and make a good place to sit while you decide which book to read.

I would suggest heading down to your town hall or county clerk's office and see about pulling any tax records for the house. From there you can find out the names, occupations, and earnings of the previous owners. You should also be able to figure out the years of any major building projects by the change in taxable area and tax assessments. From there you can take the names you found to the library and see what they can help you pull up. Census documents, old newspapers, maybe even birth, death, and marriage certificates should all be possible to find.

The library will be a good starting point though. You might be surprised at what they have or can access. We had some of the historical city photos on file as well as old maps. We moved them over to the museum eventually but we still have microfilm of old newspapers. (It’s getting digitized)
Apple peeler/corer! I used to have one of those (gave it to my daughter). The can be used for potatoes and other produce if the corer can be flipped down.
There are 1 million people living in the whole province of Nova Scotia. Most of us have been there for generations. Thrift shopping and curb cruising is very thin. I moved to Ontario from Truro Nova Scotia 4 years ago and was amazed at what you can get here. I furnished my place here with Facebook Marketplace purchases. I got an oak dining room set for free from somebody who was throwing it out. She was moving and didn’t have room.There is a Mennonite thrift store in HRM that has nice stuff and used to be reasonably priced. Once you get to know some locals you may gain access to folks who are downsizing from a house to an apartment. Wear those respirators any time you are working. Handling fibreglass insulation barefaced is not a good idea….
Yup, the entire province has literally half the population of Montreal, and yet I still found myself in an argument with some dick who was convinced that, just because he found “dozens” of cast iron radiators on his Craigslist (immediately a sign he’s probably US based) for less than $50, that it’d be no problem for me to find enough radiators to furnish my whole house 🤦♀️ I’m like “bro… not that easy”

If he could point you to a house lot of 20 or so radiators for $50….🤣 worth it to take a trip.I would be tempted to install a wood stove vented to that fireplace. Likely require a new chimney liner… The area where you live used to have coal mines so a coal burning fireplace would have been a great option.

That attic looks almost identical to the Maine 1880s Victorian house attic that I grew up in. I cannot emphasize enough how cold or hot it was. One winter we lost a slate off our roof and a small pile of snow got through the boards and sat there on the floor until the spring when it melted. If you decide to use it for a crafting room, even with insulation, I would think that you would need a separate source of heat and air conditioning because I can't imagine the insulation would be enough. That said, we did have a pool table up there that had collapsible legs but there were only about 10 days a year we could use it.
Library in the attic sounds awesome but the weight of the books would be significant and without reinforcing the structure of the house might not really work out.
Electoral rolls will tell you who has lived there in the past. From there you could look at census records.
Shannon, as to your question on suggestions as to where to look for information on the history of the house and previous owners, here in the United States you would go to the recorder of deeds in the county or city in which the house is located and they would be able to tell you the previous owners of the house and likely be able to give you more detailed information as to the house of the house itself. Hope that helps a bit.

I moved into a 120 yr old house a year ago and found infor by looking up the address and former owner names in the local newspaper archives. The original owner was the mayor at one point so it was news that the house was nearing completion in summer 2024. Some newspapers have also been scanned into google so it was a lot easier to find than I thought.

I think you should check out local tax records and of course track down any historical societies in the area. As for the burp, I'm glad you left it in. "Better out, then in" my Dad always said. Love this series.

In the UK we have something called the Land Registry Office where all records relating to Title Deeds, Land Ownership, Building Ownership and major construction works are registered. Not sure if Canada has the same but worth looking into if they do. If there have been any significant additions to the property there might also be blueprints or records of it in with your property title deeds. These are usually retained and stored by your mortgage lender until your mortgage is paid off.

Restore - one of my favorite places! My husband and I built a farmhouse and all of our cabinetry plus some of our other furniture came from Restore. I still have a huge island that we haven't quite figured out what to do with (too tall for a sewing table); the house is still under construction.
The local library might have genealogy records, since you have the names of old owners, sometimes you can find old pictures that way too.

It is worth checking in with local history centre or community group. I was working at my Local History and Archives Centre and stumbled across a huge file on the history of our apartment block. It is worth flicking them an email at least! And if they don't have that info, ready, they can always contact your nearest "big" regional centre on your behalf (which is a time saver).

House research ? Try the local Historical Society ! Even a small library could have records/photos , etc . about your house and , don't forget the township Tax Assessor's office ! Good Luck !
