CO Artwork Leaked: Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp News

Sorry, no stream today. I was a bit too tired to stream three days in a row, but here have this Advance Wars video instead :>
Which CO artwork did you like the most?
Sami and andy
Sturm
Grit and Sami.
Probably Nell, Sonja and Max. Sami is hell cute as well.
Honestly Nell! Sami also looks great and so does Sonja and Konbai
21:47 "I would not trust this guy to share a life boat with me, I would be afraid the life boat would go under"
Dude he IS the life boat.
LOL
So that's why he's the naval commander!
Nah, he'll sink with his ship.
You fool
He IS the ship
@@Durahan82 Nah, fat is very buoyant. He ain't going under unless he's trapped in a room that gets submerged, and, even then, he may be buoyant enough to rip right through the steel.
I love how Mangs puts Sonja's red recolor next to her green outfits on the slide and mentions that he's colorblind. That's one way to get the message across.
They took Grit's pistol away because of his poor trigger discipline. Sami knows you keep your finger off the trigger until you're ready to fire. That's why she gets to keep her weapon.
SOmething something Alec Baldwin joke.
In my mind this is canon. Nothing will change my mind.
It does seem like the kinda thing that would happen to Grit.
In the middle of a war room meeting he's trying to make a point and his gun just discharges through Olaf's hat leaving everyone in shock.... 😂
Grit's just gonna say all calmly like "oh, good thing I was aiming at that button in your hat. I can scarcely keep my eye off of it. "
This is proper headcanon
Olaf: GRIT!
Grit: What?
Olaf: Gimme your gun.
Grit: Why?
Olaf: You've accidentally shot 3 soldiers over the last week.
Grit: It was an accident!
Olaf, realizing that Grit's got his pistol in his hand and his finger is on the trigger: GET YOUR BOOGER HOOK OFF THE BANG SWITCH!
Also seems Drake has been demoted and lost a rank! He's missing one of his gold bands! Hes been demoted from Commander to a lieutenant. Not only did they pudge him up they demoted him too, Drake got bullied hard by the art team.
Drake's bloated frame is representing of his ships bloated prices.
UNDERRATED COMMENT^
Lol
"Wayforward has a thing for cutesy girls and hips and hourglass figures"
*Looks at the entire Shantae franchise*
And mighty switch force, and Catgirl Without Salad, and...
AW1 where Andy is the protagonist: this dynamic pose really shows off his dumb personality
AW2 where Andy is still a part of a bigger campaign: this pose really shows his character progression since the 1st game
AW:DS where Andy is not part of the campaign: this pose just makes him look like he's just standing around waiting for something to happen.
I laughed way harder than I should
The reason Grit looks short is the perspective. It's a top down angle somewhat, which steals some of his height, whereas the past ones seems to be lower than eye level to give him some extra height.
Grit likely will draw his gun during his Power animation, him not having his gun ready and only taking it out when he's pushed far enough fits with the laidback cockiness he's often depicted with.
His CO Power's animation appeared in the first advance wars trailer, and he doesn't have the gun, although he does the finger gun pose
Would be pretty neat if he did the finger gun for his regular power, and pulled out his revolver specifically for his super, but I honestly am doubting it’ll make any appearances.
@@dragonitzgame Oh right, had forgotten about that. Missed opportunity if you ask me
Other Co Designs: yeah a little bit of dual strike, a bit of 2 mm maybe some of 1?
Drake: *C H O N K Y*
I guess we now know what happens to all that food that Drake steals from infantry and mechs.
Can't believe they made Drake American this time around.
Maybe you thought Eagle was older because of the hair color and eyes, but I always thought he was just a few years older than Andy, hence why he thought of Andy as his rival, they're both young.
Yeah I agree, I always thought Eagle was maybe like 3 or 4 years older than the OS cast. Like he's still young and foolish but has a bit of maturity, hence why Sami was into him over Andy.
Yeah, same here. I always kind of imagined him as being around Andy's age, maybe a little older.
Ngl, I thought Eagle was in his 20's as well and that Eagle was obsessing over a "rivalry" with a 14 year old boy
@@josephzeigler6853 If you remember anything about the story they are rivals because clone andy did warcrimes and he hated real andy for it.
I've always thought Grit using a revolver, an infamously inaccurate weapon (back in the Wild West days), as his weapon of choice was just more evidence of how ludicrously good a marksman he was.
Something that I always liked about Grit in the first game was how expressive he was with his reactions despite his lazy personality, he smirks and snickers and gapss and pouts which I always found entertaining and looking at the trailer I see that he is still very expressive, which makes me happy ^^
His AW1 portrait is a really good image of him. He's laid back, not taking things too seriously... but he still has his gun in his hand. It gives the impression of someone who is more ready for a problem than he first appears.
This with his new look gives me cowboy bebop vibes
The bird/down view makes you look smaller. New Grit is drawn in a top-down view, making him appear shorter to the viewer.
Something I noticed about Nell's new design is it seems to be inspired by both of Nell's designs from AW1. She's wearing a short jacket over a vest, and in the Japanese version of the original game, she only wore the vest, with the full-sized jacket being used for the international versions.
I just love how they mixed the Japanese and Export version of Nell by having both her Gilet and the Jacket. Sad for the pointing stick tough....
Here's hoping that we get Chinese Port Kanbei lol
>sees the pfp
I have several questions.
@@JuanMatteoReal I imagine "Sauce?" is one of those questions.
@@JuanMatteoReal
You can ask away. Remember: being ashamed of questioning is being ashamed of learning.
@@mrhawky45 Where's the sauce
The stick that Nell is holding is called a baton. It's used most commonly in musical instruction, but I like the asthetic it gives to Nell.
Baton describes a range of stick like instruments. From tonfas to police bats to instructional tools. Root wise it's definitely connected to 'Battre' which means "to hit".
So in my mind it will always give me the image of teachers slapping their students on the wrist, so I'd appreciate another word for it honestly lol.
But I also like the aesthetics of it on Nell.
I think it is just a pointer.
I'm surprised there's no leak of Flak's or Sturm's designs, seeing as they were also featured in the new Re-Boot video. Of course, naturally I'm interested in how Hawke will fare, though I guess that will have to wait until either the release or further leaks are uncovered.
But you get a good look at him in the intro when he activates barbaric blow though
@@korhol2065 True, yet the Power activation animation doesn't reveal the full art, like the leaks have.
I think this is a test leak, an intentional leak to test fan aproval and interest.
Druping sturm now would be like what happen with the sonic movie.
@@ericquiabazza2608 Oh, maybe...
I really hope they have two designs for Sturm. I mean, it's not a deal breaker, but we can't call him Generalissimo Teapot if they only use his AW2 design!
For a few of these, I'd like to point out that the characters (all of them) definitely look a lot older in DS than advance wars 1. It's clear all of the characters have aged 5-10 years during that period.
It shows particularly in Ande, Olaf (his white hair), and Kanbei. All of them have very clear signs of aging over the 3 games. Some of your criticisms of DS definitely seem to stem from that aging.
Agreed, I would add that they not only look older, but especially with Kanbei for example, but also Olaf and Grit, they look tired - as in tired of these ongoing wars and conflicts. Kanbei wants to be a good ruler, bring stability and properity to his nation but cannot stop worrying for his people and Sonja in particular. Grit is just plainly annoyed by the never ending fights and wishes to spend his best years elsewhere (but is compelled by his sense of duty and righteousness)... well and Olaf I feel is just broken, the wars took the few things he held dear (e.g. his hometown). He looks like he is about to leave it all behind, wander off into the snow never to be seen again
for me personally it's also down to how nearly every character is facing to the side so they can "talk" during cutscene better but the angles are just super unflattering.
that couldn't possibly be cause DS takes place a mere 6 months after 2
@@Prodawg for Real?
Ds takes place months after aw2
tbh I disagree with your assesment on Samis AW 1 pose, it's actually how many soldiers carry machineguns, they have to be set up to be fired anyways, the only untypical thing here is that she's even carrying a machine gun and not a rifle
that's also why the AW2 is sooo much better, because she's actually armed with an SMG, not a freaking machine gun
I also feel a lot different abotu Grit, for me he's no sharpshooter, he's a relaxed cowboy artillerist, a sniepr rifle would fit Sami a lot better, I can imagine Grit with a radio or a pair of binos
I really like your Grit suggestions. I agree that he always seemed more aloof and not interested in getting into "the middle of it". Like, he's lazy, but incredibly proficient at understanding troop movements and angular math intuitively. Binoculars or a radio totally fits him more than him running around with a rifle.
I think a Revolver would been better for Grit than a Sniper Rifle.
Grit is supposed to be a one of a kind Sniper, good enough that his aim with a Revolver is the same or even better than a soldier with a Sniper.
@@robertobrosful where do people get the idea from that he's a sniper? he's an artillerist
Mangs was incorrect in regard to actually military history? 😮
I do kinda of miss the LMG in her first artwork. Your infantry are the piddliest units in your army. They're not scary, they're cannon-fodder. And in a military game, sure. But by having her hold a heavy weapon, it makes Sami feel a lot more badass. People associate rifles with disposable infantry. LMGs are associated with badass heavyweights in FPS games. It helps to make her infantry focus look more intimdating by crossing the wires in your brain about what genre you're playing.
It is less fitting than the rifle, though. Especially given her mobile guerilla feel. I call it a wash between the two.
I wonder whether the dislike of a lot of the DS COs is down to the developers having to put two COs on screen at once during the Tag Power start up. If the poses were more dynamic, there might've been very little space on the screen and it would have appeared cramped on those tiny DS screens. I personally liked them, but then DS was the game that got me into Advance Wars proper.
That’s a very good point, almost everyone in Dual Strike has a Vertical Pose. You could even joke about it and call Dual Strike, Dull Stance lol it still has “DS” in the two words and since that’s how some of the character designs come off to me personally.
There is also the theme of the game, you have the new guys having a little more focus like Jake (the original jake, not the "rad dude" english people got).
Heck, Andy got to sit back almost the whole campaing.
Dual strike try to be a little more serious and show the time passed since 2 with character looking older and mature.
Grit look to pass from mid 20 to mod 30. For example.
Either that or the person in charge of drawing the characters were not good at faces so they drew them that way to avoid the issue.
Oh that makes sense that they're trying to squeeze two COs on at once... why not just display the heads during a tag then so that they weren't limited in the art?
@@alex_zetsu Oh please, no.
It'd look so stupid with how the (S)COP And Dual Strikes look.
Is it just me that i'am a weirdo, or are the mini-feet on super-menencing Olaf super funny?
What mangs said in kanbei's made me realize something. I think they made Olaf and kanbei less idiotic and more competent in 2 solely because they're protagonist now and no one wants to play as a joke.
Man, Sonja manages to look like a completely different person, despite every individual detail being pretty much identical. Can't quite put my finger on why, but it might be the innocent "I want to learn new things" expression instead of a more sharp-eyed "I see right through you" glare. But then looking back to the older ones, I don't see that glare there either, so I dunno.
There is one detail that's changed, though, and it's pretty small but impacts a lot. As much as I prefer loose-hair Sonja visually, it is completely out of character for her. Her hairstyle is the surest sign of her personality. Pulled back tight, kept perfectly in place at all times. She needs to stay in control of herself and her situation at all times, right down to the last hair. I don't think she'd wear her hair like that without a significant shift in character, no longer feeling that need for control in every aspect of her life.
(In other news, that Grit design is SS-rank godtier amazing and I love him dearly)
Yea, I noted that too. She has more sharp angles in the reboot design and less soft curved elegant features but the facial expression is definitely the biggest difference. She just doesn't have that piercing, serious gaze in the reboot. Her eyebrows and mouth are just not down-turned enough. I like your note on her hair as well.
I think when it's all pulled together, the reboot design just doesn't feel like Sonja. I hope they modify it a bit, even if it's just slightly changing her expression to be closer to AW2.
For me it looks like an NPC design.
First one show playfullnes and youth, but also a little stern face.
2 is the more Sonja.
And 3 (DS) is weird, like she forcing to be profecional as is expected of her experience and position but alsk reverted to her Red color scheem from the original japanese design denoting her PASION, something show heavily in that game with interaction with lash.
They added more weight to Drake because Green Earth submarines had trouble diving
Drake ascended into M E G A C H O N K. I personally like it, actually.
Grit looks amazing, I love his hat and trench coat. Olaf is reliable it my favorite, he looks so decorated and has that senior look
>Mangs misses the stick
>"teaches you the ropes"
yeah Mangs is into humiliation
If you're shocked by Drake's weight gain in Reboot Camp, you probably shudder at the thought of what Grimm from a potential Dual Strike DLC release would look like...
There’s also the thought of how gorgeous, Rachel, Sasha and Kindle would in that DLC.
@@brandonwilliams6119 Most gorgeous would be Javier.
Sami is adorable, Sonja is looking good, Drake looks like a Mega Chonk, and Olaf looks badass.
Drake is looking like "you dont have to share a lifeboat with me cus we wont ever sink"
I like the confidence on his face
Hyped for Sturm. Based on the trailer, the man looks *sick* and I hope that his design will be leaked as well for a full picture of the Leader of Black Hole.
Yah, guy looks very threatening. It draws a lot of the vibes of Darth Vader without feeling like he's just a ripoff. Inspiration was drawn from Vader, I don't doubt, but he is still his own man. The steam coming out of his armor helps give him his own unique and threatening flair.
Shocked that all of the people who made these designs also made... Drake....
We've already seen sturm, so now I'm more hyped to see adder, lash, and hawke
As great as the Darth Vader inspiration is, imo best parts of Sturm's new design are Stukov's hat and coat.
This new Drake look is fanservice for the americans.
In my opinion Sonja's new look is an improvement over every other depiction.
Sami's is also really good though not as big an improvement over AW2.
Seriously they done my boy Drake dirty, he was always bigger but now he is just a blob.
Grit is characterized by his lazy trait so i don't mind his artwork not depicting the gun ; he's a chill guy who will be just loafing around, not intimidating others with the visible presence of his gun (psychological warfare) because it will be too much of hassle to deal with for him. Though, it does look like he will draw a gun on you if you're pushing him enough which does also reflects his personality.
Grit's the kind of guy who just wants to be left alone and doesn't care about much until you push the right buttons, then he becomes deadly serious, as Koal found he pushed Grit too far.
I like Drake's new design. I don't think they added that much more weight to him, because his pants look like they can't even contain his girth without a belt in AW2 and AWDS.
new nell is full of big sister energy now lol
Well she is a big sister
Ara ara
mangs is really into the stick.
It's key to her "authority mommy" look, Dangs loves that
I still like Sami's design for the reboot. Drake is....well, he's Drake and I think that's all right. Agreed that Olaf looks majestic af.
Now, all that's left is.......
...to see the Black Hole COs. Obviously, Sturm's going to look badass from what we've already seen. Flak looks amazing, for what his model is. Interested to see how they changed Adder and Hawke; moreso for Hawke because I just imagine him being the intimidating and mostly silent antagonist. As for Lash, well...I think we know what most of us expect from the leaks. However, owning Shantae and the Seven Sirens, I can say that I'm eager to see which direction they take for her design.
Mangs Olaf always had a White beard in Japan. They cleary made the DS designs mix both designs for a lot of characters like Sonjas glasses and grits hat.
Olaf also wore a Santa hat in AW 1
Mangs not commenting on the horrible change from a green dress to a red dress in dual strike for Sonja, then reminding us he's colorblind right after. Gotta love it. Her entire color palette swapped from green to red for that game, and it was horrible.
She always had a red dress in the original japanese game, it was just changed to green for the western side. Dual strike changed all designs back to their original ones like giving Grit the cowboy hat and Olaf having a white beard.
I always thought Grit looked like someone out of the Gorillaz in the first AW artwork
My problem with Drake's art since the first trailer and now is his face. His body is ok, but his smug expression is not something I'm particulary fond of.
Drake is supossed to be the most relaxed of all the COs, with a relaxed smile on his face, and calm enough to stop Jess and Eagle from killing each other. He fought Orange Star in AW1 just because he could and he wanted to lose time. A friendly smile would have been better for him.
I mean at least in AW1 he's pretty damn smug when his units take out yours lol
Grit looks like he's ready to draw big iron. Relaxed, but still little tensed and concetrated.
When Reboot Camp comes out or if more Official Art gets leaked I hope to see Mangs compare the rest of the COs and they looked before compared to their Reboot Camp Art. I just love hearing Mangs critique and his based opinions. Also want Mangs to rate each CO theme.
21:04 I always thought dual strike Drake looked like a bus driver. Like I was always waiting for him to announce when the next stop was coming up.
drake looks like he ate a battleship. in one sitting.
I still have great hopes for Lash's redesign.
And Hawke
HD Drake looks like someone who could post an activity shart and start world hunger in Green Earth by himself.
i think we can all agree the co designs are overall really good in reboot camp
This topic has been controversial since the first trailer; why would we now “all agree”?
It's WayForward after all, those guys have some of the best looking 2D artwork out there.
@@TokyoXtreme Not sure about that, the problem people have with this game is the in-game graphics, they're pretty bad, artwork always looked pretty good
Honestly... Not really, Most are fine enough to work but nothing great, The only exception to this imo is Kanbei and Grit where they looked incredible. The others are a bit ehhh...
I don’t like that heavily exaggerated art style tbh.
Its too cartoony. I always liked the more realistic approach of the original games in that regard.
AW1 Max is just Gigachad.
21:23 drake ready to take a job as a security guard
Drake be out here lookin like the mayor from cloudy with a chance of meatballs
With Drake- he absolutely got chunky but this is the dude where one of his defining design details is that his gut was poking out of his shirt.
Still no confirmation or deconfirmation of big tidy goth gf Lash :(
Soon!
drake look like he ate jugger
with regard to Kanbei, his AW1 art is clearly inspired by WW2 Japanese military uniforms. Very reminiscent of Hideki Tojo. AW2 gives him way more SAMURAI in his look and it is way better as a result, more aligned with the type of Japanese culture people in the West actually LIKE.
Kanbei looks like a modernized Popeye the Sailor villain.
while in dual strike, kanbei degraded to senile old man
Sami is an interesting case since I never really see characters holding rifles like that and whenever I do it’s actually pretty cool
And I say she rocks that look professionally
Am I the only one who skimmed at the start to look for the Lash design out of morbid curiousity?
@Jewel Kemerena It's only because of how weird it sounds that I wanna know at this point XD
22:30 A lot of the art was changed between JP and EN releases of all three games. Grit’s hat is wide brimmed like a cowboy hat, Drake is in actual pirate gear instead of military naval wear, and in Olaf’s case, his hair was originally white (similar to Santa Claus).
Kambei's height is a reference to the famous photo taken between US General Douglas MacArthur and Emperor Hipólito.
Sonja always had Glasses from the offset as shown in the original art compared to the localization, where its removed. Olaf had white hair. Grit always had a cowboy hate, but the localization replaces it with a Russian hat. Then Nell had cutoffs and a short skirt in the original as compared to a coat and her skirt lengthened. As for Drake and Kanbei, they had different outfits in the originals. Drake was more akin to an actual Pirate, while Kanbei had Kamakura era armor. Likely, ya didn't check the original art compared to the localized ones shown in the video.
So important thing to note is the weird poses in Dual strike could have been to accommodate the alternative costumes.
This is a good point!
Saw the title & thought is was going to show all the COs art.
The thing here Mangs is Why didn’t you use Grit,Nell,Sonja,Olaf,Kanbei original artwork here to compare since they were censored and were more complete. Why Did you base it off the localization versions only?
Probably because the original Japanese designs outside Grit and Sonja didn't really have much of an effect on the newest designs. Armored Samurai Kanbei, Santa Olaf, and Pirate Drake are basically their own silly things. Also the only one that really seemed "censored" is Nell, but it could be just as argued that covering her sleeves and making her skirt longer was more about making her look more professional than simply toning down perceived sex appeal.
Woah, we clearly have different ideas of Eagle
I don't remember if there's any in-game dialogue against this, but i always thought Sami and Eagle were both just a bit older than Andy, while Max and Nell were the only adults in Orange Star
Who knows
Sami used to go to school with Sonja so lines up. If anything that might make Sonja the one who's much older than she looks. Though she fits more in DS. And yeah makes sense Eagle is around their age. Though to be fair, I was under the impression Sami and him were adults before looking into lore lol
This artwork looks sweet, especially Olaf's.
I am awaiting Sturm's artwork simply because he looked awesome in the trailer.
Olaf looks cool
Maybe its just me but I always though that Kanbei especially in Advanced Wars 1 looked a lot like Emperor Meiji.
Grit's new coat sleeves are too tight in my opinion. The older design made him look like a lanky guy wearing an ill-fitting coat (an old hand-me-down from Olaf?), which gave him sort of a scruffy/ragged/second hand look that matches his background as a turncoat who went over to Blue Moon. The new design makes him look as if he had his coat custom made for himself. Kanbei's probably the character who's had the most drastic makeover between the four games, but I really like his new look. The baggy eyelids make him look old enough to be Sonja's dad!
In the trailer you can see for a few frames in the blizzard power that olaf was sitting on a chair, maybe a dev oversight?
Not an oversight I’d imagine, probably intentional as the CO power seems to actually be him leaning forward menacingly (in a sort of “You’re in for it now!” Pose) while sitting in the chair.
You can actually see the back of it enter the shot behind him again (in addition to him resting his hands on it’s arms at the start of his power) after he leans forward. (At 24:15 ) Almost certainly a deliberate callback to his AW 1 design.
@@TheMongral oh i didn't noticed that part, thanks por pointing out!
Now that puts a another question in my mind if there would be a possibility of them adding recolors/outfits back, that would be neat
Mangs, you should also compare the CO artwork from the Japanese releases. Then things will make more sense such as Grit's hat and Olaf's beard color.
New design Nell’s hands are floating rather than “on her hips”, which looks sorta weird. 10:00
Olaf (among others) was always meant to resemble a bit more to specific stereotypes (for each). For reference: www.spriters-resource.com/game_boy_advance/advwars/sheet/11788/
Dual Strikes artwork is as if like they belonged to Fire Emblem Fates boxart.
he was replaced by Fiora or "We've got trouble" lady
I hope they make the dual strike COs unlockables.
19:05 UOOOOHHHHHHH😭Sonja looks so good!!! so cute!!!! 😭😭😭
'Wayforward has a thing for wide hips."
**checks Drake and Olaf art**
Yep, that checks out
So about the change in "design" for Grit, Olaf and others in DS. Famicom Wars DS was the first game to be launched (after a while) of the series. When IS launched the game, it was lunched as an "international", unique version of it. They preserved the design and changes for each character as they were in the japanese version for everyone, though. Which explains white beard Olaf, Sombrero Grit, Red suit Sonja, and the others with prominent changes.
Also, Dual strike artwork seemed to have an issue when "digitized". For some reason, all the artwork in the games and in some promotional items and game manual is actually darkened much more than it should be. Contrast issues i suppose; you could see the correct color in the artwork of the now defunct AW page and the famicom wars ds one. I collected all of the wallpapers of the pages back when they're online. Must be on one of my older hard drives, buried into documents around here...
*Slight edit:* Australia received a revised version of the game one year later, but i don't know if there were changes made to that version that were different from the international release.
All the artwork looks pretty good, but I do agree on drake's situation, he looks wider than his height
Max and Grit are probably my favorite designs.
One thing I always noticed throughout the AW games, is that the CO poses always remind me so much of jojo poses, hips forward torso back
I always thought there should be an advance wars prequel. Kanbei being depicted as a soldier in the first game made me think "what if sensei just handed kanbei command and he wasnt used to it yet"
And maybe we could see Hachi commanding orange star as well!
23:01 Wasn't Olaf's white beard because of the Japanese version? And because Dual Strike didn't have the western design like the previous games?
Kinda wandering how they will present Adder, more sleazy or more menacing
Probably more menacing with an air of snarkiness knowing how Wayforward does stereotypical baddies.
leaks said Caved in eyes (Purple badded eyes) and they are going to make him thinner. his pose may looks like a snake that needs to be stepped on.
He's going to become orochimaru
22:39 how to train your dragon says hi imo for re-boot camp
Grit having his gun put away actually fits him more than having it out.
He isn't one to show the enemy what he has in store for them.
Flashbacks of rockets hidden in forest in fog of war
I like a lot of the redesigns silohuettes in terms of the outfits and everything, but I do think there's too many "just standing there" stiff poses. The ones that work the best are the "just standing there poses" that have more purpose (like Kanbeis). Compare that to a lot of the previous iterations, where they'd push a lot of standing poses to be more dynamic (like Sonja having excellent lines of action through her silohuette, whereas the new one is perfect straight with one leg back.) The poses are too stiff considering how cartoony the style is.
21:13 Now imagine what they would have done to Grimm if he was in the game!
To answer you question about olaf's beard being white in dual strike, his original japanese art had both a white beard and white hair. It may have been in refrence to that as grit got his original hat back in dual strike, and sonja got her original uniform and glasses back as well.
If Grit is a sharpshooter then why is he holding a pistol? Shouldn’t he have a long-range weapon? Always thought that did not make sense.
Redesign Drake looks like that one Captain guy from Wall-E
Rip my hopes to see Lash. When you do get the art I got to see it asap. I have to see it it’s killing me
Drake is the lifeboat
I think I realize why Grit looks smaller.
It's the "camera angle"
In the older games the "camera" sees Grit directly from the side and in Dual Strike the "camera" is lower than his head, making him look taller.
The reboot "camera" angle is slightly from above, which gives the impression that you look down on him, which make him look smaller.
I always assumed Duel strike Olaf just got older thus his hair turned white. Last I checked several years pass between each game so I would not be surprised
Dual Strike Max looks like he has boulders in his arms
I understand your frustrations with Drake. They double down on Drake being a fat battleship captain. Drake was a former pirate & a great surfer. The new Drake would break any surfboards that he rides on.
What have they done to Nell's heels though?! 😭
She doesn't look that "I'm gonna wipe out your troops and walk over you" anymore.
The same way you said Eagle AW2 could be chalked up to development
so could be said of Andy
take into consideration that AW, AW2 and DS are a connected timeline, in which they get older as time goes by
Andy being this little kid dumb yet genius, can be chalked up to growth, where in DS he's already mature and its design strikes a more mature and calm guy, which is not necessarily bad, but it's also not unreasonably out of nowhere
and the primary example to take years into consideration is Sonja, to me Sonja is not really having its design reworked
it's her growing up.
She starts as a kid in 1, looks like about 11 years old in AW2, while being a complete mature teen by DS
and also you might want to consider that Kanbei and Sonja are very clear to be designed as representative of an old east era, Kanbei being an emperor (a high position in royalty) means his kid also has to follow manners which she does and she respects her father
and so, her DS pose actually strikes that mannerism properly, heads up, hands behind back, straight back are actually good indicatives of proper manners for the east and shows her growth over the years
my whole point is mainly, while some iconic aspects are taken away from previous portraits, consider that some of these actually do make as much sense when you consider their theme representation of them and the growth in timeline, not just gamplay or a static timeline where everyone will remain with the same attitude forever
also no, Olaf's default hair is the same
the White is a color change outfit.
really love Drake by the way ahahah
My opinion on the artworks:
Andy: is fine, but his oversized trouser is just too much, looks weird
Max: his body is just too chunky/muscular
Tami: She is great, but her trouser, shoes, ammo seems too big to me
Nell: it's really just perfect
Grit: not sure if i like or dislike it. there is just very little of his face and his facial aspects
Eagle: i don't like the face, but that's because of the cartoony style of the remake. But his artwork fits very well to the game.
Kanbei: it's fine. it shows power, but also anger, which i personally do not like that much. kanbei just was always power, determination, but that artwork just does not transfer that
Sonja: it's amazing, i love it
Drake: great artwork, but again too much chunkyness (just like Max). they just made him look fat for fun, which is kinda okay, but they really overdone it. But his face is amazing
Olaf: Amazing, but I think not enough of his face can be seen
So, WayForward did some decent work. I do care more about the face, because that's what you usually see. The artwork is barely seen in advance wars. Some characters are okay, some are great, some have their issues, but none is super super awful.
this makes up for superbowl store raid I just had to endure
