I am an African-American male, 32 years of age, married, 2 kids, interested in Masonry, living is Virginia. There is the thought that in South Eastern Virginia if I petitioned a "mainline" lodge, that would direct me towards a PHA Lodge. Thoughts?
That is a possibility, not entirely restricted to the Southwest. If you can tell me where you live, I may be able to suggest a nearby Lodge that would be a good fit.
Donald McAndrews Chesapeake, Virginia. There is also a large Masonic Temple in Norfolk, Virginia. Mind you, if the race divide is not something that has been conquered in my area by brotherly love, then however unfortunate I may think this to be, I want to go where I will be accepted for the kind of man I am and not the color of my skin. Also, this is not a troll post. I am in search of Masonic light sincerely. I just went on a tour of the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania which was amazing and serves and the inspiration for my original question.
I will make some calls to determine where you will be accepted and comfortable, and I will get back to you. Send a friend request on Facebook (Donald McAndrews) so we can exchange email addresses privately through Messenger.
when you say "free from any felonies" is that specific to virginia? does that come from the virginia grand lodge or freemasonry as a whole? when i was a younger man, i made poor choices and ended up with a felony. i have since grown into adulthood, grown to understand my choices and why they were wrong & this day i couldn't be anymore of a different man, that boy is something that i have left in the past, i have grown to be a good man, father, and i have discovered the lords love & grace. this growth & desire to become better is the same growth that has led me to my interest in freemasonry. i want nothing more than to become a freemason. what steps can i take to achieve this?
Go to a lodge and ask for a petition. Only after you explain yourself and what you stand for , meet the lodge members and build a bond…. 9 times out of 10 , they will not accept your petition or payments if it’s already an absolute no. Good luck 👍🏾
Donald McAndrews yes, I know you have to ask and it’s a very prestigious organization looking for men with integrity. Last week I visited the Grand Lodge at Philadelphia and what a beautiful building! I’m a lover of history and was amazed that the building has been around since the founding of our great Nation. And was interested in the history of our founding fathers, like Benjamin Franklin. I reside in a town with much history. SUNBURY was the home of Thomas Edison. Thank you for your reply.
There's a great many men in my lodge that didn't enter until their 60s or 70s who looked into it only after hearing about it from their sons. It's worth noting you should be able to bend at the knee. If you have trouble let them know ahead of time.
The terms "lodge" and "free" are in opposition. When something is lodged, it's stuck, not free. Also the terms "obligations" and "free" are not in harmony. To be obligated is to have to do something, unable to refuse or decline.
It is possible. All you need is two Masons in good standing to vouch for your character. If you don't know any Masons, contact a nearby Lodge, indicate your interest, and they will take time to get to know you until they are comfortable to vouch for your character. I had no relatives who were Masons.
I respect the masons so much, they say they take a good man and it make it better. I understand the concept the only thing for me is that I am already better I don't need no one to tell me, that's why is called self improvement.
@Speciality C. S. One of the qualities a Mason is expected to exhibit, is modesty. Perhaps you need to work on that. That said, you may be a fantastic person in all respects. Great. You should also realise that, yes, men can achieve their best without being Freemasons. However, some men prefer to go down the Fraternity route. We are all different, we are not robots! Some men thrive in an atmosphere of brotherhood and fraternity...they love to go about things in a "Masonic" manner. Men who are typical of this tend to have served in the armed forces, or the police force. Good luck in all you do.

I encourage you to find a Lodge near where you live or work. If you have friends, relatives, or colleagues at work whom you know to be Masons, they can assist you. The process is to submit a petition which must be signed by two Masons in good standing who can vouch for your character. If you do not know any, then it would be necessary to get to know some at a nearby Lodge who, once they get to know you, would be willing to vouch for you. After the petition is presented, a committee will be assigned to investigate you, and depending on the jurisdiction, you may have to pay for a criminal background check. Once that is done, the Lodge will then vote on your petition. Things tend to move slowly and deliberately in Masonry, which is a good life lesson in itself.
your dad my grandfather was a mason. Not such a fine man. What they do in the Masonic Lodge is break a man down prison style. As a new initiative you must masturbate in front of the whole Lodge. if it wasn't nothing to be ashamed of the doors wouldn't be locked and they wouldn't threaten to kill you if you ever expose the secrets of the lodge.
