I learn so much from all of your videos! I recently bought the OM-1 and I am still working out the settings. I want to shoot in AF mode, but I feel I need to learn Shutter priority or Manual mode...

Hello Mark and thank you once again for another no nonsense, practical guide, delivered at just the right pace for people to grasp what they are being told. I finally took delivery of my OM-1 two weeks ago today and spent the early part of this week setting it up for various styles of photography. I have been an Olympus user since 2007 and used all the OM-1 bodies and was surprised how long it took me to get my head around the new camera and I think that was primarily because of the issues you touched upon in your video today, namely, I was questioning if I now really needed to thinking about some of my settings I previously used to help with problems that now no longer exist. Had I known you were going to post todays video I would have waited and spared myself some time.😄

Thank you for a very informative video, Mike. I don't shoot Olympus at this time but the videos are so well done that I watch anyway. And who knows what I might choose to shoot in the future. I'm 80 years old now and weight and balance is starting to mean more to me.

The "Bird Mode" is just INCREDIBLE good. I shot puffins, fulmars and northern gannets in flight from a small boat while driving through heavy sea in Ireland. A very good keepers rate.
My giod old OM-D E-M1ii wouldn't have done that.

Great video on this topic cheers. Just came out a bit too late for me as I’ve just returned from a week in Kent :). Was trying to get dragonflies in flight during that week using my om1. The heat made that even harder than usual !

Hi Mike, thank you for this interesting video. As I am currently testing my new OM-1, your explanations are very useful for me.
I have one remark about the AF Mode C-AF+TR versus C-AF: If you use AF-Field mode ALL there will be no difference. But if you use a smaller AF-Field, there will be a relevant difference. With C-AF the focus will get lost, when the bird is completely outside the AF-Field, while it stays in focus when C-AF+TR is selected. I tested this with a dummy bird and shutter button half pressed.

Thanks so much for sharing your settings and findings with us. I was looking at either the OM-1 or the Canon R7. The R7 is out of the question as it is too crippled for my needs. The small and slow buffer size, no battery grip and a few others. The Canon RF100-500 is very good lens, but at f/7.1 and you add an extender on it and it becomes a rather slow lens. Also the fact with the extender on you can only go from 300-500mm on the zoom because the extender goes in a fair bit into the lens. I have had a battery grip on every dSLR and my mirrorless cameras. Mirrorless eats batteries for breakfast and when the camera is in portrait position, having your right arm in the air is not only uncomfortable, you are not as stable. Even if Canon was to release a 7D Mk II camera next year (very unlikely), the lens is still the issue. the RF100-400 is not an L series so does not have the weather sealing. So most likely will get the OM-1. Would love the Oly 150-400 Pro lens, but the budget won't allow it.
Cracking images Mike. I have had my OM1's set up identically to yours, but must try out CAF without tracking. I, too, have noted that many users are in favour of that, so I'll give it a go. I've been using CAF + TR since collecting my cameras back in May and have been pleased with the results: so it will be interesting to see if I notice a difference.

I used the 150-400. Rare I use anything else now.

Such a good video! I note you recommend SH2 or silent sequential for minimum flicker. Do you ever use SHI and if so in what circumstances?
I believe I have used it once when c-af was not required. On previous models with only 18 fps c-af I used it more often but now 50fps with sh2 is enough.
Thank you for putting this together, you seemed to very briefly mention exposure metering. Do you use centre weighted? That seems to work best for me but I often seem to be dialling in +1.7 upwards to get a BIF anywhere near correctly exposed, particularly and not surprisingly when the bird has only a sky background.
I use evaluative, but no exposure pattern will get it right everytime.. Stick to one pattern and learn when you have to compensate. In the days of film you had to wait 2 weeks to see your results and no Exit data. With digital the learning curve is much faster.

one difference (OM-1 with AI Detection on) between C-AF and C-AF+TR is:
C-AF: the camera will only focus on the detected bird when your AF target box and the box of the detected bird overlap. In case they don't overlap the camera will focus on the subject under the AF target box, ignoring the detected bird.
C-AF+TR: the camera will always focus on the detected bird, not matter where your AF target box is in the frame
So e.g. when you have a detected bird in the upper right of the frame and you use the small AF target box in center the camera will ignore the detected bird with C-AF and focus under the small AF box, but with C-AF+TR it will still focus on the bird.
I don't know if there is a difference between C-AF and C-AF+TR when having ALL focus points on the camera active.
On thing you can do with C-AF: when there are more than one bird in the frame you can use the AF target box to select the bird to focus on.

I originally thought C-AF w/o tracking did not have the option of subject detections? It looks like I am wrong. Thank you for your explanation though.
06:51 As far as I know the difference between C-AF and C-AF+Tracking is that the former relies on subject recognition throughout, while the latter switches to generic shape and colour tracking after the shutter button is released. So C-AF tries to track especially the head and eye of the bird and should be best overall. C-AF+Tr may be of advantage when the bird turns its head back and forth all the time, so when the head is not visible the generic shape and colour tracking may save the day. Birds in flight however tend to keep the head very steady throughout, and that may explain the equivalence of the two methods for this use-case: after the head is detected, even the generic shape and colour tracking will work as the head stays its course for most of the action. You should see a difference (whatever it may be) between the two methods for birds looking nervously for food on the ground, for instance. I am just speculating as I just got my OM 1 and I am busy making all possible mistakes using it.

Thanks for the video, Mike, very helpful. I pretty well agree with all your preferred settings, but have been unsure about the best option for sensitivity. I'm very interested that you've found little difference between the different settings, but as you say, it's hard to come to a conclusion with subjects which aren't repeatable. I've settled on -1 most of the time.
I suspect if you turn Bird detection off then the Sensitivity matters as it did on earlier models, but with it on then it makes no difference.

Thanks, Mike for a great and informative video. I personally prefer to set the AF stickiness (called AF sensitivity, which I think is misleading and confusing) to -2 in order to decrease the risk of the camera changing its mind and refocusing on another subject than the intended one. And I use the AF limiter to decrease the risk of the AF locking on a subject in background. I also use Auto-ISO and there I set the shortest acceptable shutter speed to what will suit the situation and subject.
I used -2 on previous models, but David Smith from OM Digital Solutions has emailed me to say with Subject Dectection on it will make little difference. Turn off subject detection and -2 will make a noticeable difference. I have not tried testing with it off, but I am assuming it is correct as it was on previous models.

Thanks for this Mike, Question you always use your IS in auto? I ask because I read for birds in flight they say to set to S-IS 2 and for perched birds set to S-IS 1.
I leave it on auto all the time, even on a tripod. Never seen a problem.
Id think a humming bird might be good for setting up your camera. If you can catch those wings you've got one hell of a shutter speed. They're fairly common and like feeders.....

Thanks again for another great video! Is the 1600 ISO setting because that's what it takes to get the shutter speed you require, or is it because that's the ISO setting that creates the amount of noise that you're always willing to put up with because it looks fine to you? I remember you sharing that concept in previous videos. Thanks again!
Upto 1600 I see no noise. A test I always do when I buy a new camera. So my starting point is 1600 and I then may go higher, but not lower.

@@allenthomas4280 I think it is quite good up to 6400, but when Badgers start mating in front of you we would all go to the highest iso even if the quality is poor.
Great video again.Thank you! I would love to love Olympus gear or micro 4/3 for birds in flight. Unfortunatly, every time I visit the spot I usualy go and make a comparison of the 2 combos I own (Nikon D500 with 300mm F4 and EM-1 mark II with 100-400mm), it's like days and night. Of course the Olympus combo I own is far less efficient than the one you use. I could imagine to upgrade to the OM1, but for the lens (150-400mm), it is out of reach for my wallet. And I guess that this lens play an important role in the results you get?!?! Thanks again! Denis
The 300mm f4 is just as good and cheaper.
As Mike writes, the 300/F4 is an excellent lens and the IQ is as good as the 150-400. I often use the 300/F4 for BIF and when I am on longer walks or if the terrain is rugged.
Mike you mention the manual, does a print version come with the camera, or am I living in the past?
Manuals are PDF files today. In the U.K. I have herad of people asking Olympus for a printed version and getting one free, but that was a while back.
Thank you Mike I like the way you make logical conclusions. I originally had my camera set to SH2 but then reset it to 20fps, I will give 50fps a try again.
The question I have now is one that I have asked in other forums and still have not received a logical answer: When is subject tracking advisable, under what circumstances.... why does it exist?
I can only talk about birds and mammals, but I always have subject detection on. I would never turn it off. However you use the words "subject tracking". With subject detection on OM-systems are now advising to use CF only, not CF with tracking. Is it possible you are confusing the two?
Turn off bird detection and CF with tracking could be better at following a subject than just CF. I am unlikely to ever find out as bird detection is so good.

I am struggling to get my head around this, i.e. I follow (and believe) what you are saying but I don't understand the science- if it was my eye I would identify the bird and track it isn't that logical? If so why is subject ID and tracking not so good as AF with ID and without tracking?
@@jonathanashton4758 Nobody can answer the question. I was told the algorithms are better for subject detection with just C-AF. That means there is a bit of coding in a program that in very slightly better at tracking a bird.
As I said in the video I tried hard to see a difference and could not, but I will accept there may be a fine improvement and will leave it set to bird detection with C-AF only.
Does the CAf setting apply to other models eg.Em1x, as well for bird in flight? Or CAf+tracking be better suited?
On the M1x i always used C-af for birds inflight and turned bird tracking off. It was very poor.
Hi Mike. I have a question - fyi I’m using the OM1 with the 150-400 4.5. IS on or off at high shutter speeds, say, 1/2000+? Aways on? Off? Sometimes off? Do you notice a difference?
I never switch it off. Never see an issue.
Hi Mike, I enjoyed your video, one point I do not understand is that you say you shoot in Aperture priority most of the time, however, you say you have a starting shutter speed of 2500, how do you achieve that being that you are in Aperture priority? Thank you.
2500th I suggest as a minimum to use for birds in flight. Does not matter if you use aperture, shutter or auto iso priority that is what I aim for.
With the lens wide open and 1600 iso 2500th is easy to reach unless it is very dull.
@@MikeLaneFRPS Thanks for the prompt reply Mike, I thought I was missing something, get a bit confused at times, I need to check my settings more often as I use aperture priority but don’t always check to see if my shutter speed is adequate. Had lots of blurred wings. I suppose using auto iso and aperture priority may lead to the lower shutter speeds I get in dull conditions.
@@braddersclash There is a good argument for using shutter speed priority, but I have been shooting aperture priority for 50 years plus and change is hard.
Light is everything in photography and for birds in flight you usually need good light and from the right angle.
Hi Mike, is this video made with the 1.2 firmware update? If yes I wonder if you have compared how much more keepers you have with FW 1.2 compared to FW 1.1 with bird detection. For me 1.2 seems far more accurate. I think it could mean it is one of the most accurate bird detection camera's on the market currently.
I did the firmware update after this video was made. It has made no noticeable difference in the few opportuities I have had to try it.
I can only echo Stephen Elder's comments.
Can you help with the metering modes. when shooting a dark raptor bird in flight on a bright sky the ESP metering is too dark, causing clipping on belly feathers. ETTR manually is ok but easy to forget when then shooting a white bird. is there another metering mode that follows the focus and only exposes where the focus position actually is?
All metering modes get the exposure wrong in different situations. I always use one mode and get used to when it needs compensation. I use the evaluative or all over metering rather than spot, but whichever you use stick with it.
I remember sitting in a hide when a pale red kite landed on dark grass in the days of film. I under exposed, but my friend who was with me over exposed. He spot metered and I used evaluative, but we both ended up with the same exposure.

I waited for someone to say this for the longest time.
For instant lock on, tracking should be DISABLED.
BECAUSE there is always a PAUSE before tracking kicks in.
This short pause is enough to loose the shot.
I think tracking on the previous cameras was pretty poor. I’ve recently got an OM1 and have had some success with bif using the 300mm f/4. I need to check this setting now- can’t remember how I set it! 🙄🙂

Any of you guys using Om-1 + Olympus 100-400mm ? No matter what I try most of my BIF images are out of focus. Even slow flying larger birds are not in focus. I use at least 1/1600s-2000s, AF+C+all area, bird detection and I shoot mostly in very good light. I tried various settings from the internet. Even White Stork which is quite slow is out of focus most of the time. I'm gonna try different stabilisation settings but I'm running out of ideas. Anybody experiencing similar results? Also MC14 seems to confuse it quite a bit - (it won't detect the bird easily) I've been shooting with 7D MK2 and I had better results before...

Having added the OM-1 to my G9, I can say the G9 is much nicer to use. The customisation goes further then the OM-1 which seem illogical. We should be able to program any button to do anything. With the OM some of the functions are repeated. I've got the dials for shutter speed or aperture, I don't need it on the D-pad as well, let me choose something else! We can't reprogram the two buttons on the on off switch, which would be more useful on the other side of the camera by my thumb.
Anyway, rant over. As you say, shame the G9 struggles to focus, the OM-1 blows it away! If I could take the best bits from both cameras and combine them into one, I'd have the "perfect camera".
