Brother, thanks for making this video. My father passed away July,14,2022. He had this car, moving it and turning the steering wheel to move the car onto the street. Wow, what a fucken noise as like a cat in Heat. And yes the most current time putting it back in the driveway from the street leaking on the street. So, I'm packed up with my car ramps, ready to find out what the problem is. Its 2008 only has 89000 k on it. The old man was 75 and bought it brand new.
Anyway, I'm in Canada so don't know the cost of his part yet, but be checking out Part Source.
Thanks again.
A million thanks, not only did you help me find where the pump is located, but showed how to replace. What a bonus. Appreciate the hard word and video.
you are exactly my kind of mechanic. I do my own stuff too. My wife's GP is going to need a PS pump here soon. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for the detailed video brother I'm going to tackle this this morning and your video gave me the confidence now I know I can do it in my driveway
As a person who knows nothing at all about cars, you just saved my car from getting towed cuz I can’t find anyone to help me fix it, thank you so much!!
Love your channel and I’m glad I found your channel, as a female and owner of a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP SC and not wanting to go broke fixing it with how expensive everything is there is no money for extra, the only bad part is the heat I either get up earlier than normal or wait till almost midnight with this TX summer we are having so thank you. I want to know step by step and I’m a visual learner any way. Oh and no I’m a lefty…LOL
How did the replacement go? I like step by step as well like every single details for these projects
I managed to pull the whole pump from the top, did not remove alt or bracket. Just takes some tight maneuvering. Thanks for the vid.
I have been doing repairs and maintenance on my own vehicles for 30 years. I hav big hands and tight spots are always a challenge. I have a Bonneville and a Grand Prix and both are the same setup. It’s almost impossible for me to even take the cap off to add fluid because of the limited space. My Grand Prix is leaking fluid and this video helped me so much. I defiantly will be taking my car to a mechanic cause this is insane space management by GM designers.
My arms were black and blue changing the spark plugs on the 05 grand prix, took me 3 hours to get those suckers out! It beat me up, but I won, that's how it seems to be with this car
Thanks, I just found a 1998 Olds Intrigue in perfect condition. 3800 with 102, 400 miles. It has been sitting in a garage for around 25 years. Of course it needs some TLC. I am doing my studies to be able to replace things. Plugs were frozen and original, new belt and the power steering pump is next and a belt tensioner is on the way. Valve cover gaskets and plenium are next as there are oil leaks. It runs like a new car except for the pulley noise. Thanks again.
To reinstall the pump, I took a 4" or so nail and cut the head off. I put it in the lower bolt hole in the block. Then I slid the pump over the nail. This holds the pump in place and makes it easy to line up the upper bolt. The only tricky part is that the nail has to be short enough that it doesn't block the pulley from turning, but long enough that u can pull it out after the top bolt is in.
The detailed explanation was awesome. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you BigBlock. I took off the electrical box as you said and got the pump bolts in minutes...WHEW...
This is why I'd rather pay my shade tree mechanic. He's actually better than most mechanics that went to school for it.
Yeah my video suck I don't add it anything it's word for word of course I don't cuss either because usually my grandkids are around, nice job man. True DIY
Good video, high pressure line wrench size plus 13 mm for the two bolts...Now I'll go do mine. Thanks for all the info.
Hey man 👋
Thanks for the vid.
I got an 06 Lacrosse.
Similar, almost identical and I was able to get it out of the bottom. Bitch of a job and I've still got to mess with the pully and install. I'm considering skipping the new lines. I've got 365k on it and not sure about the rack
The alternator is easy enough to remove. Then you can work from the top and it will be easier to remove the pump from the top.
You should use a tie wrap to hold the fuse/relay box over. Unbolting it then letting it loose just keeps it in the way.
Good video!
Had I known about moving the coolant elbows it would make lining up the top bolt so much easier but, that's only in the case were your changing the water pump or planning on flushing the coolant system
I recently had to do this; well I have a bolt left over and I’m trying to figure out where it goes. It’s been 5years since I’ve had to replace my power steering pump. So is there anyway to tell where the bolt goes? Please help
Take the pump out through the top. Tight but you can leave the alternator.
thanks i enjoyed watching you ,it let me know a lot of what to do
Shaun, you're the man! Very helpful video thanks! I never like watching edited videos I'm going to attempt it on a 2002 Impala. Freaking piss poor design, just like the water plastic elbows and the composite intake manifold plenum...yikes!! LOL
Bruh you gotta drop this💯 #straightbars🔥🙏
That high pressure line 😵 Thanks for the video👍
My friend said he bought an 04 prix and the guy who sold it told him the ps pump was bad he didnt want to deal with it. Out of curiosity to help fix it i found this video. Now i know exactly why and i wouldnt blame him
okay so i have an 07 base gp of it matters; there was a wire harness of some kind attached to my PS pump🤬 obviously i can’t see jack in there and i haven’t heard anyone mention it. Just thought I’d warn people before you pull your pump out like me and rip whatever the heck that wire was.
Thanks 👍 this video provided some valuable insight. That high pressure line was soooo difficult to line up to catch a thread. Ended up removing the pulley, again and removed the pump, again and only then we were able to catch a thread. Before we quit for the day we had everything hooked up and filled the reservoir, started her up and boy did it spray all over the place. From what we could tell...that high pressure line wasn't up high enough to make the seel. You mentioned some green O ring that needed replacing? I can't recall seeing one 🤔 anyway I'm getting ready to head up to my buddies house to get started again. Question...would putting teflon tape on the threads of the high pressure tubing nut that screws into the pump housing securing the aluminum tubing cause any issues? Issues like screwing it in or possibly voiding any seel that would be without the teflon tape on the threads? Thank you ahead of time 😊
@@shaun4bigblocksllc Thanks...yeah without the O rings the steering pump is useless.
God bless you for your service
What method and size wrench to remove the high and lower pressure hose? Into the steering rack?
Was it 23/32 size? What wrench type did you use? crows foot?
Was the new hose the same size flare nuts? Brand name used?
This is doing it the HARD way. Just remove the coolant overflow tank and pull the pump out from the top. Easy peasy. Takes 15 minutes or less to pull out the pump.
I just remembered. What about adding a filter to the return line?
I’m about 3/4’s of the way done with this. There’s a lot of great advice here. I took off the coolant overflow, the fender support bar, and the electrical box. I was hoping to get the pump out from the top. Nope. I went through the bottom as described. Turn the pump tank and curve the whole thing so the pulley is facing up as described here. My swaybar links are short so they weren’t in the way. I got the pulley on the new pump and it went back in the same way from the bottom. Getting it lined up with the bolt holes was a beast at first but I talked to uncle Frankie and he suggested a drift pin in the top bolt hole. I got it lined up with a long screw bit and was able to then go under and get the bottom bolt started. Then the top… now it’s time to finish reassembly!
a little more work but easier if you remove alternator and top engine mounts and use ratchet strap to rock engine forward. makes it nice and easy to get it from the top besides hoses
Thank you my friend. This was very helpful. Cheers
thanks for your video , 3 years later and its my turn lmao !!!
You did a good job ,that job sucks i’m gonna be doing it in 100° as well🤬
Same here buddy 😂 plus I gotta do the cpu module and put a new radiator in. In the great state of Texas heat
1 Thank you so much for the helpful video. 2 I was so glad I didn’t have to take out a bunch of shit till I got to minute 21 you tease. 😂
Where does the power steering pump hose go too Ik one end goes too the pump it’s self
Is there any way to just take the pulley off. Replacing my water pump and there's that one bolt that's behind the pulley just right where you can't get to it threw the hole's in the pulley. Any help would be appreciated thanks.
Hey man, when you replaced your power steering pump on your Grand Prix, do you recall a plug mounted to the side of the pump. When I pulled my power steering pump off it unplugged from god knows what and I’m having trouble finding what that jumper went to. Thanks in advance.
Did you ever figure out where it went to? The plug wire on mine snapped off and i cant figure out where it went to
@@manuelcordova1027 mine was actually for my knock sensor. It is fastened to the stud for the power steering pump. It’s right between the engine and transmission looking from the ground up. Real easy to miss if you’re not looking for it.
@@ruetempest9896 thank you, I'll take a look and see if that's what my issue is, haven't had any luck searching online so i really appreciate the reply
It’s no problem. Let me know if that’s it. Most likely it is. I spent hours searching under the car.
@@ruetempest9896 it was the knock sensor, thank you for that man, saved me such a big headache
Anyone know how to connect the steering end to the rack in pinion in the whole?
I went to go replace the power steering pump on my 08 gt and both bolts are broke off in the block. Looks like I have some fun awaiting me.
OMG. I would not have anticipated broken bolts if I tackled this job. I would have a 3000 lb. piece of scrap in my driveway. Were you able to remove the broken bolts from the block?
Keep ur balance just like a surfboard
Need information on the heater core, what's the best solution to cleaning it without having to spend a lot of money?
When i did it me and my dad just used a pump attavhment for an electric drill and we flushed it with water both ways, and then we flushed it with coolant hooked it back up and we were good. We hooked it up to the hoses where it connected to the engine, works better that way. If there isnt some massive clog in the core you could just do it using gravity
Thanks for the video, I appreciate it.
Looks miserable! Guess I better get started on mine!
This man didn't show you where or how to take of the pump bolts because they're behind the water pumps pulley and the power steering pump pulley but I don't know about taking it out through the bottom
Glad my 99 doesn't have those stabalizers
Did you have to get the air out of the system
yes, once you put the new one on and attack the lines fill the reservoir Then turn the wheel lock to lock right and left about 10 times with the cap off (car off). Check the fluid level again. Then start the car to run the pump for a bit. Mine had a lot of air so it started to foam and create bubbles. I left if over night because I was tired. I came back and turned the wheel right to left all the way (very important to turn it all the way until it can't turn anymore) about 10 times. Then check fluid and run the car. After some normal driving check the fluid level.
1:45 I always leave my ratchet at someone else's house..😢not always handy😮
Damn bolt broke while torqued down.. kill me.
15:38 puffy is that you?
You can pull the pump out from the top.
Dose anyone else think he talks to much
Why the hell do they make shit so hard to change smh shouldn't have to pull off ten parts to fix it!! Not to mention the power steering fluid is next to the dam pump not on top like normal cars smh shitty job
👍👍👍👍👍🍺😎
Ya know a drink would help with all of the troat clearing just saying
I need ya to call me
U don't even show how to get it out. Work on ur videos. They need work.
your Language is unnecessary .....
@@ibcoull I certainly do I got two 20 year old vehicles but I don't put it on Facebook and social media and blast it everybody in the world especially young children
I wouldn't buy super glue at O'Reillys auto parts! JUNK!!!
There's a special place in heaven reserved for those that film thier car projects and say what size everything is. I hope karma rewards you for your informative video. I owe you a beer in this life or the next. Thankyou.
I was just thinking the same thing. Can't thank this dude enough.
