The instrument is called Hoddu. Back in the old days the Fulani herdmen used to play it as they herd their cattle since the tribe was nomadic. The instrument is usually made of sheep hide and the strings out of horse tail hair. The one the musicians seems to be using is a modernized version of it. Look up "Peul Hoddu" and will hear how they actually are supposed to sound.
