The ship is not a US Aircraft carrier, unlike the Nimitz and Lincoln. It's a wasp class amphibious assault ship. It's smaller than an aircraft carrier but has its own significant capabilities.

The US warships are "classified" as aircraft carriers, cruisers, destroyers, LHDs (Amphibious Assault Ships), LSDs (Dock Landing Ships) LCSs (Littoral Combat Ships), LPDs (Transport Docks) etc, etc.. I get it, there are a lot of types and it can easily get confusing. LHDs are part of what is known as the "gator navy". It host helos, tiltrotors and jets, yes - such as Ospreys, Harriers, Vipers, Venoms, Seahawks, Super Stallions and even some F35B Lightning II jets, all of which are capable of "vertical /short take off and landing" that provide support to troops / forces "ashore". In other words they don't need a full length "runway" to take off and land. The flight deck of an LHD is shorter than that of an actual aircraft carrier ( LHDs Length 840 feet [256 meters] Width: 140 feet [42.6 meters] ; Aircraft Carriers Length 1,092 feet [332.85 meters] Width 252 feet [76.8 meters] ). This means aircrafts [planes or jets] that require a full length flight deck to take off and land, can't be launched or can't land on an LHD. [A pilot can probably try but it's really pushing it and can be extremely dangerous, it's kind of a last resort scenario but very unlikely to happen irl]. Ideally planes, such as fixed wing aircrafts, need a good length of a strip to take off / land. Anyway, As a part of the Amphibious Readiness Group 'though, one of the LHD's fundamental roles, is to "transport THE MARINES" their gears & heavy equipment (ship to shore and vice versa). They basically off load the marines to the beaches so the marines could perform their tasks. Another key feature / difference is that LHD 8 USS Makin Island is not nuclear powered, instead it uses a hybrid electric gas turbine main propulsion engine. This propulsion system allows the engines to be directly controlled from the throttles on the bridge of the ship. Predominantly, LHDs transport a large complement of personnel, is equipped with a floodable well deck [another distinct characteristic of LHDs] where LCACs, LCUs and or AAVs are launched & recovered for amphibious operations, has vertical / short take off and landing capability ONLY instead of having a full length flight deck.
Aircraft carriers on the other hand, which is a lot bigger than LHDs, are like moving airbases in the sea. It has a full length flight deck equipped with catapults and arresting gear cables (which LHDs don't have since their main objective is to perform amphib operations instead of airborne operations ), where jets / fixed wing aircrafts get launched and recovered. Primarily it operates and supports aircrafts that engage in airborne offensive, anti-submarine warfare, surface attack, search & rescue, recon, airborne early warning & control, transport & weather observation, etc. Their fire power has a far greater reach compared to LHDs, too. So basically, the main functions of an aircraft carrier includes "transporting, arming, deploying and recovering aircrafts" instead of transporting troops and performing amphibious operations. Carriers are also faster than Amphibs. Some of the actual US Aircraft carriers, such as CVN 68 USS Nimitz, CVN 72 USS Abraham Lincoln, CVN 71 Theodore Roosevelt, CVN 76 Ronald Reagan just to name a few has a nuclear powered propulsion system.
Just because a ship transports a few air crafts, doesn't automatically make it an aircraft carrier right off the bat. There are so many ship classifications as mentioned before. Keyword here is "official classification" and function / purpose it serves in the fleet. The US Navy fleet is so large and has a lot of ships in it. LHDs are simply not classified as an Aircraft Carrier. The classification and nomenclature depends on the ship's purpose & role, design, structure and engineering and perhaps a lot of other factors not listed here. I think it is important that we get our information straightened up, if it is initially false and incorrect because the truth is the most important thing (especially in journalism). You also have to consider how sensitive and heightened the current situation within that area of the world. Sadly, misinformation could lead to a lot of pain and misfortune, whether you're directly / indirectly affected.
One last thing, Sometimes it is helpful to just search and google away instead of acting snarky to people online. When someone behaves in such an unsightly manner, it only shows that person's shallow bravado and major ignorance. There are countless amounts of information and resources available online to literally anyone who has access to the internet. Search, Research, Think and then Speak (Type). I hope this helps. Peace!
