WOW - I'll Remember This Day! Kayak False Albacore!

  • Whew this was a seriously insane day. I don't get in on them like this very often. Considered bait by the meat guys but well liked by most sport fisherman. These things zip all over attacking small bait and can be extremely finicky. This was a day where they were more aggressive then usual and I luckily end up with double digit landings!
I used 15lb braided line, 15lb flourocarbon leader, and a 7/8 oz Hogy Epoxy jig in silver. Working it fast and holding the rod tip low to the water. I always tried to cast ahead of the fish boiling up on the surface. Fun stuff and a fast paced day!!!
    Reel Used - Tsunami Shield 3000 - amzn.to/2jE6oQH
Rod - Cabelas Fish Eagle 50 Series 1/2 oz to 1 1/2 oz
    Line - 15lb KK - amzn.to/2xgzt9y
    Leader Hi-Seas 15lb (good stuff + great price) - amzn.to/2xgPV9P
    Hogy Epoxy Jigs - www.HogyLures.com
I'd also check these Shimano Coltsniper Jigs out - amzn.to/2jEEqUW

All I used was a 7/8oz Hogy Epoxy Jig in Silver for Albies - 15lb Flourocarbon leader (3-4 feet barrel swivel, 15lb braided line) Casting into fish that were breaking frequently accounted for easier hook ups and I noticed holding the rod tip lower to the water prevented the jig from flying out of the water too much. This type of fishing is best in Montauk and further north so I don't get to cash in on it much locally. I'm not that experienced at this type of fishing honestly.

    • @capecodcanal

EliasVFishing ..great albie action! When you keep one for cooking. Remember to trim out the darkest meat.
...Being in the tuna family it should taste very good. It's probably healthier than the larger tunas with much less or no trace of heavy metals in the meat.

I found skipping the epoxy erratically along the top of the water as quickly as possibly turned them on also. Check out hogans video on the Hogy site

I always loved the fact that they like a fast retrieve... in a fishing world where many of the game fish prefer it to be slowed down, the albies are a welcomed change.

Regarding the catch and cook...false albies can taste good if done up right. Bleed them out immediately, put them on ice and cut the bloodline from the meat. certain areas of this fish taste like tuna though not enough good meat to waste such an amazing sport fish.

We used to get them on snapper poppers- exactly where you are and in front of the breezy jetty all the way to tilden and sometimes by 222 bayside on the surf with tins / metals- glad I saw the vid brings back memories- really fun fish to run into

Caught my first Kayak Albie last weekend in eastern Long Island. Insane when they went under the kayak. Thought I would flip for sure. I prefer to catch them from the beach only for this reason. Amazing video. Thanks!!!!!!

Last week was like that in RI. Crazy bite! This Hurricane has kept me off the water though, hoping it lays down so I can get a shot at them this weekend. Hurricane Jose came at the worst possible time.

That was fun to watch!! You brought ice to keep a fish but I think you should have iced down your reel on the ride back to the parking lot!!! Btw I noticed your life jacket is not your duck taped version, good to see. We wouldn't want an accident out there with all the power boaters. Stay safe.

EliasVFishing whats funny... I go off the Golden Eagle out of Belmar (really good people tbh)... We usually ride out anywhere from 45 minutes to 1 Hour and 5 minutes to start catching Albies. And most of the time, where fighting Mackerel at the top. Another great way I was recently taught on the boat to snag big Albies.... Just put a Peanut Bunker on a hook, let the bunker sink until you just lose sight of it... Albies love Peanut Bunker too!

They are a member of the Tuna family. The Japanese eat False Albacore as sashimi so it isn't any worse than Mackeral in fishiness. It has a bad rep because commercial fishermen have much bigger dollar better-tasting catches available than these oily fish. I don't like like Mackeral either for the same reason, I'd rather go releasee them and get fish from the market.
