If you’re a fan of the Dragon Ball franchise, we have no doubt you know its creator is Akira Toriyama, but it may surprise you to know how many other people were involved in making the series the success it is today. His editor, Kazuhiko Torishima, helped make both “Dragon Ball” and “Dr. Slump” successful, even though he rejected the first few things Toriyama sent him and, when Toriyama couldn’t come up with a name for Goku’s signature move, his wife suggested the now iconic kamehameha. We know everyone loves Goku, but we’ll explain why that is and how our favorite Saiyan almost ended up being quite different than we’re used to seeing him.

RIP Akira Toriyama Sensi….. you shaped my life in more ways than one. I started watching Dragon Ball when I was about 14 or 15 as a teenager in high school before I went to class and now I am in my mid-40s and your lessons and shows impacts and still influences my life today. Thank you so much for the memories and the escape from turmoil to enjoy the world and universe you created.

I didn't grow up with Dragonball, I grew up with Thundercats, Voltron and Transformers, but I agree, I don't think anime would be the same without it. I think it hits the spot with a lot of people because it has a hero, a villain, and something worth fighting for which we all can agree on.

@@TK-pi7xf No, The "RoF" arc did and then the "Zamasu Saga" did and the "Trunks saga did" but really the "Goku black arc" started the power scaling, because of rosé being Goku Black's version of SS in the anime but is his version of SSB in the manga and because a SS2 trunks power rivaling to SSB and rosé and how he was able to slice a fused god. But other than that yes the "ToP" did start comparing the "ToP" characters to characters from heroes and other characters from other arcs and sagas ect.

30:00 DB & DBZ were already popular outside of Japan prior to 1995. America was just late in the game in that regard. Hence, there's a significant generational difference between people who grew up watching the show in the U.S. compared to other countries.

All Toriyama's 42 "Dragon Ball" manga volumes plus several DBS manga volumes with Toyotaro were officially sold more than 300 million copies worldwide and still the 3rd best-selling manga in the 21st century.
What's more impressive is so many anime make deeper and complex storylines yet Dragon Ball is the most basic anime ever but still is like you said the 2nd most sold manga of all time.

@@deadrock1678 and one piece is written by a genius for older teens while db was more for kids so...my thing with naruto is it could of been better if kishi didn't go the route he did with the story especially after part 1....it became really boring because he stopped caring about the future and world and cared more about villians sasuke selling merch with new characters left and right and focusing on the past...dude lost his story and fitting we never see naruto become hokage in the manga its skipped and only mentioned as a gag in a one off cause he forgot the whole point of his series by the end

The Frieza Saga was a good saga to leave off of tbh (me not liking Goku), it’s nice to see a character having a new title to their name: The Legendary Super Saiyan, and seeing him defeat a possible universe-level threat, would be a good point to cut off, but not a good idea to.

I started loving Dragon Ball by watching Universe Survival Saga where Goku encountered the most impressive antagonist - Jiren the Gray who is not also an evil unlike Frieza or Maajin Buu. Jiren is an amazing guy who showed Goku to break his own limits into a divine state beyond the mortal state which divine beings find it difficult for mortals to achieve including Gods of Destruction. Toyotaro is an excellent artist who made illustrations of anime for Dragon Ball Super, my most favourite series overall.

I always thought the reason why the Series was so popular was due to the OVER THE TOP ACTION, COLORS, and obviously the Story lines. I’ve never really watched Dragon Ball, but now watching this video and learning about the history of it. I might give it a whirl!

@@jamescadet4450The reason why I say George Lucas is because Star Wars has influenced alot of people from music, books, fashion, art, movies, games, cartoons, comedy, etc. Dragon ball has done the same. Plus most Manga Creators admit they were inspired or even influenced by the DB universe or Akira Toriyama himself. Heck even Akira Toriyama took some ideas from Star Wars as well.

I am so happy he made this. I enjoyed this cartoon when I was young. Even the adults still watch this cartoon in my place to this day.
Honestly for me, it's not only the most popular anime of all time,but the greatest. That's because despite being simplistic, at times it can get quite emotional. It has taught me the lesson to never give up and that you can always surpass your limits. It has inspired me to work out. And I have watched it since I was a little kid, and it's still around today. It gives me comfort knowing DragonBall will always be around
I know like 4 people who has shed tears while watching Dragonball Z. Saiyan saga, frieza saga, and cell saga are too powerful. Anything with deep emotion that moves you and makes you feel reaaaaally good to the point of shedding tears, that's the difference between dragonball Z and every other anime or show. My Hero Academia is the only other show I've seen that is following the legendary footsteps of DBZ, I've met few people who shed tears due to My Hero Academia making them feel that damn good.
I dont know if you will see it but i was really emotional when Piccolo sacrificed himself fo Gohan. And in fireza saga Goku's fight with fireza lasted 20 episodes
I like dragon ball, but I had no idea there where so many angry and jealous anime fans in this comment section hating on it cause their favourite anime is not recognised as one of the greatest

I fell in love with the Dragon Ball franchise with Dragon Ball Super. I had no idea that there was a series quite like it, and I can't help but love it every time I go back to it.

I am 13 at the moment, and Dragon Ball Z was the first animated thing i ever saw. I still remember my mother reading the subs for me and my two brothers, also the first time i encountered DBZ it was on a CD/DVD my dad brought home when we lived in Italy. P.S: I was 2 when that happened

It debuted in America in 1995, but the success of the show in America, is in large part, due to Toonami on Cartoon Network. Toonami showed episodes everyday after school. Which helped the show's popularity greatly. It's simple and easy to follow plot, helps the show a lot as well. The Cell Saga is consider by most fans the peak of the show.

For me one reason I like dragon ball is the characters the characters are not OP because they have to train in order to unlock their true potential something that we can all relate to. i've been watching Dragon Ball almost all my life, it was the first anime i watched, though at the time i didn't know what anime was. It's by far my fav anime franchise for a couple of reasons: great characters (despite Goku being the lovable goof he regularly is, the supporting characters are all well fleshed-out and their personalities have shone through), tons of action, seriously, Dragon Ball franchise is the most action-heavy series you can find, it does not disappoint in that area; and lastly, the comedy, any character that can make me laugh and cry while beating the crap out of some bad guy is a winner in my book. it's hard to say which character is the designated "comedic relief" cuz DB is filled with hilarious moments from all of the main characters (from Bulma and Chi-Chi's headstrong-ways to lazy Yajirobi, everyone has their moment of comedy, even Vegeta and Piccolo have hilarious moments despite being the most serious of the main characters).
