BRUTAL! Scratch built 1960s modernist clock tower - N Gauge card model

- What do you think of this brutal modernist clock tower in Chandwell? It is scratch-built from card and paper and is based on the clock tower at Shipley Indoor Market in West Yorkshire. I think it really suits the Chandwell aesthetic, although I bet many of you will hate it. Come and take a look and let me know what you think of this scratch-built card monstrosity!

The fact that your clocks don't work adds another level of realism! They haven't been working on the real thing in Shipley for ages.
Indeed!
Looks great. It was animated,he would come out from behind the door and ring the bell and then go back inside from what I remember.
Would have loved to see that!
*Insert sickos.jpg" Ha Ha! Yes!
Brilliant. Absolutely marvelous. Put me in the neglected run-down brutalist appreciation category. We've gotta crowdsource you a desktop laser cutter and/or a vinyl/stencil cutter. Or crowdsource the funds lol!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Being of a certain age I have seen hundreds of layouts of all scales and types. To be honest I don’t think I have ever seen such attention to detail as you display on your models. I remember you saying most people wouldn’t know it was there but you do. Can’t think of anyone as patient as you Michael. Brilliant
Thank you, that is really kind. Means a lot from a regular viewer - cheers.
I agree and I also am of a certain age.
Definitely top tier. And imho, the finest work I've ever seen in N scale. Michael would've run rings around my cohort in architecture school.
Dang! I love brutalist architecture. More of it say I! Wonderful model.
It’s a beauty, isn’t it!?
I know this clock tower of old (my late father worked in the Co Op directly opposite) and I'm blown away by this amazing miniature re-creation. Great stuff!
Oh wow! Thank you!
You have captured that ’Cleckhuddersfax’ feeling perfectly. You really could be in Batley, Dewsbury or any of the West Yorkshire towns where the architects and town planners of the 60’s thought their creations were modernising the tired Victorian town centres. Little did they know how it’s come full circle and many are back to looking not just tired, but completely knackered. 😂
Yeah, it's sad isn't it?
Beautifully hideous modernist monstrosity. Well done.
Thank you!
The clock tower was a bold move given its potential to visually dominate the built environment...and that's exactly what it does. As such it's the perfect addition to this wonderful project...
So, do you think the architects should get a credit? Maybe a small plaque affixed to the tower.
Oh I like that idea.... I will add it to the list of finishing detail. Thank you.
I have to say I wasn't convinced when you first placed the white card mock up of the clock tower all those videos ago. But many cut out hexagons later it has grown on me and proved that the Pockets architect's years at community college weren't wasted! Cheers
Thank you Davie. It definitely looks better now it's coloured in properly!
Love it. It really ties the Mar et plaza together. I would have been kept awake mentally cutting hexagons after all that slicing. Can't wait to see the landscaping under the arches.
Thank you Mark. I think it finishes off the scene quite well too!
Love the little guy with his bell!
He's cool!
Looks better built than the real one. Yet another brilliant build.
Hah - do you think? It looks in better condition maybe! Thank you!
Absolutely incredible, both the build and the patience required to complete it. Another triumph Michael. Thanks for sharing. Roy.
Thanks again!
You could do a spot of moonlighting as a surgeon with all the scalpel practice you get
Hahah - I could post videos too... You do use PVA to seal up the wounds, right?
I believe that you were successful building this clock tower because of all the lessons learned from your previous structures. Very cool.
Thank you. Yeah things are getting easier the more experience I’m building.
Layers upon layers of card. I so appreciate what you do. Beeen working on a small cylindrical tower where the windows and their frame have to align as the layer progress outward, now that a challenge. When I get the tower right I'll send you a PM with a photo of it.
Happy modeling
Don
Oh now layers in a cylinder with windows... THAT is a challenge!
Love it..."another 56 hexagons" :-) Mark
Argh! Hexagons! :)
You have put a lot of thought and effort into the making of the clock tower, it is a fantastic structure that you have made.
Thank you! Cheers!
Amazing build again we have a similar clock tower in stevenage where I live also built in the 60's .
Yes, there are similarities between the two aren't there?
This is magnificent. The view from under the "arches" is really to die for ! Can't wait to see what's going to come on the other side of the bridge arches around the "culvert".
Thank you!
To die for? In my view nothing is to die for! To kill for, maybe.
@@royfearn4345 🤣🤣🤣 nice one ! 👍
A grand clock tower that only serves to remind the posh buggers from Leeds that their time is up.
That'll learn em.
tower looks great
Thank you!
Michael, it looks brilliant. It reminds me, in some ways, of Billingham town centre (do you remember that?)
Brutal, minimalist, East European, grubby and depressing.
You have captured the look perfectly.
I never went to Billingham I don't think. So I don't remember it sadly. Was it awful!?
@@Chandwell Quite outstandingly depressing, a parade of shops around the downstairs of a square with flats above and a mezzanine walkway. Chandwell Mar'et captures it beautifully. The shots underneath the bridge reminded me of it immediately. It shows that you have caught the look exactly.
You've done a remarkable job of making an absolutely depressing scene. I almost feel sorry for the inhabitants of Chandwell.
Thanks for the in depth explanations too. I'm trying to work out how to make rolling stock for my 1:55 scale narrow gauge model and this has given me a lot of ideas.
Thank you!
Once again I am greatly impressed by the modelling skill shown by the shopping centre. You really have captured the essence of a this sort of centre. The missing letter from the market sign seems especially appropriate for the era. (Our local leisure centre was constantly losing letters). Once again congratulations on a fine bit of modelling. Regards John.
Thank you John!
For years ours was known as the _HOPPING PRECINCT
Brutal indeed!
Indeed!
To quote Nathan Explosion: "Brutal."
Brutal.
I admmire the fact that you choose real buildings and model them so faithfully. You have a touch of genius!
Thank you - that is very kind!
"I can almost see what the designer was trying to achieve". Almost? If he was trying to achieve 1960s ugly, like Bessemer Park, he succeeded.
And so have you. It looks tremendous.
Smashing.
Thanks,
Bob
Haha - thank you!
That's hideous.
i.e. brilliant.
Goodness knows how you have the patience to cut out all those hexagons (and the rest of it!
But surely in Chandwell, someone would have pinched the bell by now?
Have you seen that ladder? I don't think even Scotty would dare go up there to pinch the bell! :D
Awesome work!
Thank you!
Love it!
Thank you!
Brilliant as usual
Thank you!
Michael, I have no idea how you manage to put together such fabulous buildings, you obviously have nerves of steel I don't have.
But today I have had the bogie out of a 68 to fix a wire back on, (metal fatigue) and my Hall steam loco in bits to replace traction tyres and wires to the tender. So maybe I could do it ? It's the mention of Inkscape that is scary.
That Market area is so Stockport, amazing stuff Michael 👏👏👏👏
Good stuff! We all have an area that we love, or that we are brave in. My superpower is Inkscape and PVA glue on card. Looks like yours is more at the engineering level. I daren't even pull off a bogey... I think they just snap off, but I've never dared pull hard enough... :D
@@Chandwell There is a knack to it Michael, just don't do it to a Dapol 50 or 68 !
Lovely. Le Corbusier meets Coronation Street.
:)
It is amazing what you are able to do with paper and card stock. Thanks for showing it.
Thank you!
This clock tower is not "over the top" - it crowns the brutalist matpiece of yours, Michael. Such a magnificent conterpart to the Victorian Clocktower of Chandwell station!
All the best
Valentin
Wow, thank you!
Yes, that ugly concrete tower turned out to be the right addition to the Plaza. I wonder what the original town fathers were thinking when they approved this building??
Who knows!?
I love how true to the Brutalist, ugly nature of the Shipley prototype clock tower you have stayed with its miniature Chandwell doppelganger. However, I agree that the beauty is in being able to see a glimpse of the future that the original designers had in mind. Great work, Michael!
Thank you!
I think it’s ghastly yet - oddly beautiful! Congratulations again on a fantastic representation of brutalist modernity. 👍👏
Yeah that is how I feel. Awful. But lovely.
When you first talked about the clock tower I wasn't convinced it would work. I was wrong. You did a great job building it and it does work on the layout. Very nice!! Cheers - Larry.
Thank you - it could have gone either way. I was a bit worried when I first saw the white mock-up.
Beautifully modeled Michael. I am continuously impressed with your applications and use of these paper materials.
Thank you!
Excellent job as always.
Thanks again!
After giving you favourable comments for previous uploads I am running out of applaudable comments. This episode beats the lot Well done
That is very kind! Thank you!
Another fine job
Thank you!
Superb Michael. Your skills TOWER above all others. It all looks so simple when you do it on video, but cutting the shapes in that quantity using just a craft knife is pure patience.
A lovely item. Thanks for sharing Michael. Cheers, Bob
Thank you Bob!
Thanks once again for taking the time to document your modelling process from the first Inkscape plans thru to the final weathering. Much appreciated, highly instructional and inspirational. And of course the result is excellent.
Thank you!
GENIUS! Nothing less than genius!
Your view under the arch and through the legs of the tower proves the point.
Probably one of the UGLIEST buildings yet completed yet so perfectly Chandwell that it enhances, yet again, this wonf=derful and fascinating city
You have created a REAL place thst transcends even the inspirations y9ou have used.
Had the jeys to my new home handed to me on Thursday last so looking forward to moving in, setting up and restarting my own layout.
The city section (Wrong side of the tracks) will be card and paper as inspired by Chandwell
Thank you - very kind. Are you in your new home now?
This looks fantastic. It if was brutal to build, you made it look easy. Another great video.
Thank you!
Lots if hard work, but it sure looks great, Thanks for sharing
Thank you!
Love this build! the way you build the two halves is very smart, I must remember that :)
Thank you!
Absolutely phenomenal as always, another fantastic build and video! Bravo!
Thank you! Cheers!
Love the 1:148 tower; hate the 1:1 version!
Hahah - nicely put!
Yes, the tower build is very nice, but what I really liked was the view of your back scene in the opening shots. Your faded images really give the impression of distance and depth particularly against the clarity of the market and the tower.
I think it has worked out quite well. It got a bit tedious making that backscene but I am pleased with it on the whole.
Another superb building project realised Michael.
Chandwell has come to '60's life once more.
Your motivation has me fascinated.
Thank you.
Awesome, thank you!
Once again I am greatly impressed out doing yourself keep up the good work
Thank you!
realy well done
Thank you! Cheers!
An excellent piece of work Sir; being familiar with the prototype in Shipley I think you have done it proud.
Thank you - that is kind.
Hi Michael Just awesome work, cutting out all those little diamonds of card would have sent my eyes dotty, lol Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
You could find a small watch to make a 'real' clock. You've captured the brutalist feel perfectly!
A real clock would not display "Chandwell Time" of 11:41!
Dear Michael, definitely think the tower looks great. Love that view you’ve showed through the arches. Truly the atmosphere of such a ‘60s monstrosity. With the pavement as a kind of extra. Looking forward to seeing you finalizing the square. Nevertheless, I shall look out for next episode and the water works you announced. Cheerio
Thank you! Completion of the square is a while away yet. I want to get the overall scene done first - so the Town Hall needs to come first.
Really excellent stuff. Looking for something with more hexagons to cut out are we?
Yeah I could do with a few hundred more to keep me occupied! :)
You ask for comments Michael. Brutal covers it - but beautifully cooked...
I appreciate that!
Aw Mikey! Gutted I missed you at Donny mate :( I was up stairs doing weathering demonstrations with Jenny Kirk ( we were exhibiting her two layouts by the live steam stand)
Maybe next time!
Oh and of course, superb job mate! Your skill with this card thing has gone WAY up!!😎😎😎
Ah what a shame. I saw Jenny on her stand, deep in conversation with a punter. I never realised/noticed you were there. Would have been nice to say hello. I saw quite a few people who comment from time to time. Will be going to York if you are… and maybe Harrogate next month.
loving all the comments about the Mar et :D
Let's meet down't marret.
56 hexagonal cutouts x how many layers? I don't know who has the more patience, you or Tony North Eastern. Arthur
Very kind of you to mention me in the same breath as Tony!
It is a masterpiece of construction as ever Micheal. It also entirely captures the look and feel of places such as this. I do doubt however that anyone ever knew what the architect was trying to achieve ( given that he wasn't given to many periods of lucidity when he could tell them) and I am becoming ever more concerned for you that you think you may be able to divine that. Stephen
Thank you Stephen!
An absolute monstrosity. Wonderful.
Isn't it just!? Thank you!
Cool (in a brutal kinda way!😉)
Thank you!
Wow wow it may be ugly in its appearance but beautifully put together, another stunning build well done. You have captured the outlook of this tower as it was but now in N gauge I take my hat off to you. Please take care regards Barry..
Thank you Barry!
Someone's been to Shipley!
I said that before watching the video!
You can tell it's Shipley straight away, can't you!?
Hexagons are the bestagons
Bestagons! :)
Given that the real thing in Shipley has been put forward for listed status, are you going to do the same for yours?
I think I need to!
That looks brilliant! Certainly fits in with Mar et. Are all of the clocks showing the same time? Would be vey Chandwellist if they had different times on them 🤓
Thanks George. It would be a Chandwell-like thing for sure, but I believe towers like this only had one mechanism so it would be impossible for one face to stop. I did consider making one have a missing ring (all of Shipley’s rings are now gone) or hand. But in the end I decided to keep all four faces the same, showing Chandwell Time, which is 11:41.
Can't make up my mind if the appropriate adjective for your shopping centre/plaza/clock tower is horrendous, awful or atrocious. Whichever one you choose, you've got it dead on. Congratulations!
All three will do! :)
That tower looks awful - in exactly the way that the real tower would. Perfect for Chandwell! (I still love the Mar et facia).
Thanks James!
What a sentence " your ugly buildings are so nice... " your desicions are so brave, you're right ... these terrible buildings are not often to find on layouts .... I love my romantic layout but I am enthused of yours ...
Thank you! You are definitely right.
Looking as "good" as any 60's plaza but adding brick seating and unattended planters would complete the scene perfectly. I know they would be hard to see, but viewed through the arch!!!! Also, have you ever thought of installing dodgy lighting, i.e. poor and still on during the day? Sorry always want to see more from those who can.
Have you skipped to the series finale!? 😂 The finishing touches are still a few weeks away, but I have some things up my sleeves. Have not considered lighting. I used to add lights to my buildings but I realised that this is a side of the hobby I just don’t enjoy - wiring up LEDs and things brings be no pleasure at all and life is too short. Chandwell will be perpetually dark! 😂
Yes, a hobby is to enjoy don’t turn it into a chore if it's not your thing.
Ugly but perfect Michael !
Thank you!
Brilliantly hideous!
Thank you!
I would not be able to hold myself from putting in a real clock 😅
Hahah - but then it would not be "Chandwell Time" of 11:41... :)
What a brillent model of an ugly monstrosity.
Barry.Devon
Thank you!
King Charles would hate it😉
Yes he would!
How about a shabby Adult Toy/Magazine shop with a back door entrance. 🙄
This is a family show! :)
Michael The Chandwell Indoor Mar et, Tower & Plaza is looking good. Just the right level of faded modernism & rundown nature of many a Northern English & Scottish Town or City in the early 1990’s. Looking forward to culvert & stream developing if you haven’t got enough ideas check out Jason Jensen Trains UA-cam channel he’s done some good culverts in different scales. Ian
Wow - he makes some good stuff, doesn't he? I have subscribed.
@@ChandwellMichael I’ve been subscribed to Jason for a few years I do like his style and the detail he gets into his models, think you can learn from him what ever the prototype, scale, location & era you model.
Willow stream mate. 🖐👩🦰🤚
:)
Brutally ugly, but somehow beautiful!
I agree!
