  • Jane Addams (1860-1935) was a woman who worked hard for peace and helping others. She was important in America for starting a movement called the settlement house movement. This movement aimed to help people who were struggling.
Addams was one of the first women in America to go to college. Even though it was uncommon at the time, she chose not to get married or have children. Instead, she dedicated her life to helping poor people and making society better.
She got the idea for the settlement house movement from English reformers. These were people who lived in poor neighborhoods on purpose to help those in need. In 1889, Jane Addams and her friend Ellen Starr moved into an old big house in a neighborhood where many immigrants lived in Chicago. This house was called Hull-House.
Jane Addams lived there for the rest of her life. Hull-House became a place where people could get help and learn new things. It was like an experiment in helping others, doing politics, and studying society.
