When A Pro Cyclist Tries Bikepacking....

- Опубліковано 8 лис 2019
- James met endurance cyclist Jenny Graham, the fastest woman to cycle around the world, for a lesson on bikepacking. As a pro cyclist he's always had people to help him out and make him as comfortable as possible between races, but with some new challenges on the horizon he needed to be taught the essentials of bike touring. Jenny and James headed for an overnight trip into the wilds of Devon for an induction, and like any beginner bikepacker he turned up with too much kit...

Love how quick she is to laugh. She would make a great addition to the GCN team! Inspiring and so knowledgeable.
super cool lady!
I like her too.
Surly Ogre Do you ride a Surly ? Or are you just a bad tempered ogre.🤣
yes indeed, after many years on the road we all become a little bit too friendly, or crazy haha ;)
@@okantichrist Bad ogre here. I aspire to a Surly Ogre, but my current ride is a KHS Flite747 (ogre- size).
edit: BTW you are the first to ask me that. I've had this screen name for almost ten years. I'm a little surprised it took this long. Thanks for your interest.
Jenny was great in this. Please get her back again, would make an amazing addition to the team.
Went on my first bikepacking trip on June 1st of this year and rode 478 miles in 5 days of riding plus 1 day of rest, visited 2 amusement parks, hiked a mountain, walked in the fossilized footprints of dinosaurs, saw a bear, camped under the stars and rode in all 6 states of New England. It was probably the greatest vacation and adventure ever. Wouldn't have done it without being inspired by the awesome GCN team and videos!
@@jameslowsley-williams4243 I think my next trip will have me venturing out towards the Adirondacks in upstate New York.
@@jameslowsley-williams4243 Thanks man btw congrats on the 24hr challenge!
That's pretty fast.... that's like 100 miles a day.
Bikepacking/Biketouring. Once you have a comfortable bike in working order, then you don't need anything more than what you have in your own home. I travelled the fjords of Norway last month, spending 20$ on oats/rice. That's it, while other spend 1000s of dollars to experience a sanitized version of the same adventure.
On my last bike trip, I ended up talking with a random veteran, while sitting on a park bench. We talked for a couple of hours, then he turned to me with his alcoholic breath. "You're an okay guy." He emptied a leather pouch, and out came 3 medals. He handed me one of them. A silver iron cross from ww1. "This is yours."
Almost every tour, I meet memorable people like him.

Do you remember The Fellowship of the Ring? In the beginning, when Bilbo longs to go out there again, see mountains again? How no one back home can relate? Like you don't fit in their busy civilized time zone? That's probably the only down side at the moment for me. "I think I'm quite ready for another adventure." As the character Bilbo said before departing to the hidden valley.
Please please recruit this lady. she would be an awesome addition to the team. A really infectious laugh!
Jenny talks like a natural presenter!
Who among us would not like to watch Jenny lead the boys from Maine to Miami? Or from Casablanca to Cairo? GCN Epic-est of Epics, that would be.
jenny's enthusiasm is contagious, would love to see more of her on this channel, achieving so much from scratch, makes me want to get out and ride.
James has grown so much as a presenter and he's still riding with that beautiful orbea that he got back at the start of his journey with GCN, awesome to see
What was with the deeps and road tires? Not that it stopped you. Well, other than the stairs
"It seemed like the logical next step."
"REALLY?!?!"
HAHAHAHA. I love the interplay between the two.
Amazing lady, such a positive outlook - I'd love to hear her story. And I'd love to see her as a regular GCN girl
No idea who she was before this. Bring her back for more, she's class!
She's got a podcast. It's really good theadventuresyndicate.podbean.com/
I did my first week long self supported trip in 35 years. I kept gear light and stayed in motels at night. I took the train to Northern California and rode the coast back to Southern California. The trip was thoroughly enjoyable and the scenery was beautiful. The hot shower, hot meal and bed at night made it even more enjoyable. I may do the entire west coast next year
Best GCN video in recent weeks, Jenny is so positive and knows her subject.
I thought they really interacted brilliantly.
James is good fun, I don't suppose he will thank me for this, but every now and then...his laugh is rather Matt Stevensesque!
Jenny would be a great presenter for the channel...it's gone too blokey since Emma finished!
Michael Skelton I thought the same of one of his laughs.
You can tell by Jenny's laugh that she's got life all figured out!
10:16 KUDOS to the camerman in that wind
Yes, I was thinking of the camerperson too.
Also to the person handling the sound. Well done.

Looks great but this needs a part 2 with you spending the night in a ditch plus more on what equipment to buy and carry. Oh and Jenny was great btw.
I am so glad you got Jenny Graham on this video, she is awesome and she is a great source of knowledge.
Any chance we could get Jenny's kit list?
very similar to my kit.
Hi there, we put together a list of Jenny's full kit here: www.apidura.com/journal/jenny-grahams-around-the-world-record-breaking-kit/
Can you confirm what exact size of the apidura kit it is?
Boy what a laugh it’s like watching a Matt Stephens with long hair
Great video
A cameo with Jenny and Matt. ?
In other words the late 80s version of Matt!
These two together are pure gold. Their laughter a optimism is infectious...we need more trips with them together maybe a show on GCN + I would watch it all the time...great fun
Jenny is great, get her on the channel!!
Great vid, top presenters as has been said
I got to re-cycling (after many years not) after a good while doing wilderness expeds, (mostly in canoes) so the “packing” element was the easy bit really. I had gear and experience in all that.
One thing to bear in mind when packing .... a guy said this to me years back and was correct .... “people pack their fears” ...
By which he meant, if they are scared of being cold, they pack about 5 times as much warm gear as is needed etc.
Second point would be .... take very little that doesn’t do more than one thing ... a poncho is also a tarp is also a bivi bag, ground sheet etc.
Not sure if this helps anyone but thought I’d try to ring bells that were rung for me years back
very good points Mark, thank you
+1 for the poncho!
I just can't figure out where the heck to put my rations. After getting the absolute requirements for my region, which seem missing from these kits as they rode expecting hard shelter, tent and bivy, I got no place to put food, which seems a bit concerning to me.
What a great video to see.. thanks! its been a pleasure to meet a incredible lady... good job jenny keep going!
This was brilliant, as was Jenny! More bike packing stuff with Jenny please. Also, maybe a final kit list?
One of the best GCN videos ever - Laughing/smiling is contagious. Ready for an adventure now!
Great video. How the kit has changed. When I was a teenager and used to tour and back pack the bar bags were like square, the saddle bags were like a shoe box, and a good set of panniers was a must. Thank goodness for technology
Wonderful production again from GKN! Jenny is a natural presenter and between her and what’s his name? Not a wasted word of dialogue. For the record, did a tour of the South Island of New Zealand over two weeks in 1976 with my wife. Kit consisted of a 2/tent, 2 sleeping bags, 500g gas stove , one change of clothing each, minimal toiletries and used camping grounds on two nights only. We slept by rivers, drank from them too, and bought rice and beef mince daily which we cooked with chillies and garlic each evening for most of the trip. My wife was not a cyclist at the start of the trip but was at the end! So proud of her.
She is fantastic! Please more bikepacking videos with Jenny... 🙏🏼 really want to try this now...
What a spectacular video. Very natural and informative; the guest was great too
Jenny is inspirational for sure! Thanks for giving us a taste of her personalty and accomplishments.
What a great video. Love the concept and the content. Do more touring then bike packing but may have to give it a shot. Nothing like having to buy more bike gear!!! Take care and safe cycling, Al
Fab video. Pure honest enjoyment with these 2.
Love from Canada.
xoxo
Just back from a ride and watched all this with a cuppa, a great video, thanks for sharing!!
Excellent video. Well shot and highly educational/inspirational. Congrats.
Great episode, Jenny Graham's approach to life is infectious.
Love the video. Bikepacking is awesome. I'm doing the entire east coast of Florida next month. At 67 years old you're never to old to "Get out there".. Keep the great videos coming!!
What a terrific lady! I could listen to her all day.
Brilliant, really enjoyed that. Makes me want to get out and give it a go.
Great vid Hank, Jenny, what a star ! so happy and personable.......can we see more of your bikepacking prep and trips please.
My first bike packing trip. Loaded up a bike that was to small, with things I didnt need. Did a PR 165kms first day,BONKED. Morning came I went for coffee, only to return to two raccoons eating oatmeal I left in the tent. Quick clean and tape job and was good as new. Lessons were learned, kinda 🤣🤦♂️🚴♂️🇨🇦
Just glad it wasnt goldilocks friends looking for some porridge
live in BC?

We all need much more Jenny in our lives. When you going to sign her up as a presenter ?
So cool! So inspiring! Go Jenny! I’ve done one overnight bike packing trip and it was a blast. It’s amazing how little you really need.
I've been watching GCN since the beginning (honestly). GCN has continually gotten better and this show was extremely well done in so many aspects. Thank you once again! Showing Jenny conquer the world solo was so inspirational. I will make my daughter watch this tomorrow morning.
It hasn’t gotten better at all 😂 it’s got ridiculously crap..
All the presenters are acting and it’s completely bad like really really bad!
Theirs no realistic representation from the show it’s all fake and scripted and the presenters don’t even try lol they’re terrible actors
What we need is complete realism and unfortunately this show doesn’t deliver
So!!!! - Jenny Graham. What can I say. She is an absolute star. She gave a talk in our local high school (Dingwall academy) just after she finished the RTW trip, and it was without a doubt one of the best presentations I have ever heard. Everyone in the audience felt like they did the ride with her, and at times the emotions were pretty high. Very open and honest about the hard stuff, but also hugely positive about the good stuff.
So Jenny - more power to your elbow.
Oh, what a great video! You two seemed to really hit it off. Great information too. Loved it!
That was great! James has done some of the best pieces on the channel in my opinion!
James Lowsley-Williams Loved your crit Racing videos too!
Well, I wasn't too complementary about James in the last video, I just think sometimes, the humour comes across as too contrived. But with this, I'm happy to eat humble pie and take it back. Totally natural, great video. I really enjoyed it.
GCN these bike packing adventure videos are the best and I love watching them so much. Thanks guys and girls u open my eyes to what a great life could be
Really enjoyed this and taken some great advice away from it. Thanks Jenny and James and all involved for another great Cycling video. All the best Andy
Fantastic Video. Jenny is so lovely and James is great fun.
I went on my first bike packing trip with my younger brother in the 1980s when I was 16, It was in the Otway Ranges, a coastal mountain range in Australia near the 12 Apostles. I had a back pack strapped to an old spring loaded packrack that gave me a speed wobble from hell coming down a mountain with a car right behind me. At night we rode along this great little track lit only by our old bike light with a tiny incandescent globe 2 size D batteries. We could hardly see a thing. In the morning we awoke to find we had been riding along the edge of a cliff! We flew down a mountain track called Wild Dog Track and met a wild dog .. as you do, and it ran beside us all the way down to the Sea. What an Awesome trip. 32 years later an it is still one of my fondest memories.
Jenny is the type human we should all inspire to be. Incredible mindset!
Jenny is very inspirational!
Fantastic video! Get her on the GCN team! Love those videos.
Loved this! It's always enjoyable seeing other people pushed out of their comfort zone and come out smiling. Jenny is also really good to listen to as she sounds so passionate.
Do the tents that GMBN used that hook over their bikes also fit on a road bike? I'd not be keen on sleeping completely outdoors (New Zealand is crappy rainy with howling gales far too often) and their tents were neat!
This was an 11 out of 10! Not just good info, but also a lot of fun to watch. Thanks 😊
I have watched so many vlogs already... Yet have not commented. I will say this I enjoy GCN channel, you guys are great.
Great video and that will be interesting follow James struggles!
Loved this one!! this is a nice start into bikepacking!
It's a good thing Jenny arrived miked up!
Adventure Cycling Network
Love it
And there is that shadow puppet book I mentioned for the bike lighting kit.
Amazing woman, high on life and really positive and inspiring. More information on Jenny's bike and kit would have been great.
The more I watch these bike packing vids, the more I want to do it. Though not convinced I’d do UK in November for my first effort. Top effort James!
I'm glad GCN is compiling a series of travel by bike videos. Maybe you can branch out from minimalist bikepacking and do some videos on the kit, route planning resources, and experience of bike touring. How about exploring some of Eurovelo 12, the North Sea Cycle Route, right in your back yard?
What an inspirational lady Jenny is. Who wouldn't want to go bike packing having seen this. If you're ever away and have one of those lows you talk about, you only need to remember Jenny's laugh and smile. More videos to include Jenny please.
We need more of GCN´s bikepacking :3
"The blue ball inn". Dont think I'll be staying there.😉🤣
Hi GCN,
I really enjoy the bikepacking videos. Please keep it up. I`ld like to see more of that and are interested in doing it my self.
Thank you for the great contend.
Greatings from Hamburg.
What a wonderful Jenny! Inspiring video!
A real cycling hero!! Jenny Graham that is!!
Fortunate to have a brief chat with Jenny Graham at the NEC bike show recently, enthusiastic, knowledgeable and down to earth,.. oh and world record holder.Legend
She’s amazing! This is the best GCN video.
Awesome grading system! I'm gonna start using that from now on
Absolutely marvelous. There needs to be follow up video with James and Jenny and his progression and preparation. When I graduated from college, 1982 packed the bikes and panniers in a box, took a bus too Eureka, CA and rode down to Napa. Sleeping bag, tarp handlebar bag, insulin (Type1) and had an awesome trip...James and Jenny come ride Calfornia!!
Sounds like an awesome trip Tim, and no fear there will be another video
She would be a great presenter and keeps the boys minding their manners.
I enjoyed Jenny so much! Keep her GCN!!
I love bike packing videos, and I want to do it myself. It's always interesting and fun to watch. Plus I really love the accent! 😁
I am planning a few rides, hopefully with better weather 😀 I have been on a few adventures but now I have 2 knee replacements I will have to ride slower, get this young lady to do more Gcn videos please
I've bike packed from wales to southern portugal when I was 16. Doing around 100km a day, over 4-5 weeks. Then last summer I bike packed from Caen to Pau in a week and then into the pyrenees to see the tour de France for another 2 weeks, whilst cycling up some cols with all the kit. Really great experiences, and a great way to experiencing different countries.
Such a remarkable human being. So inspirational
Get her on the team, she's a natural presenter and brings good vibes. More bikepacking content also please 🙏
Wow, what an inspirational woman........ what she has achieved is unbelievable..!! She should do more videos and with the GCN team.....:)
Great video as always!!
A lot more of this please . Top film 🎥
It is wicked at how hard James was trying to keep up with Jenny. She's a force to be reckoned with.
Great vid James, isn’t Jenny G fantastic!, Just done Route 76 Campbeltown to Inverness this Sep, loved it, we live it up a bit with proper accommodation every night and a good meal but still an adventure, gonna be doing more!. Good Luck. Rob & Nicki.
How cool is Jenny!?! And Hank, good luck learning the ropes. I'd love to be riding this way. Maybe I can in the future. Inspired. Thank you GCN.
No thank you for watching John, you should give bikepacking a try it is a lot of fun!
12:49 Hank's getting a bit of the classic Matt Stephens laugh going on here!
more just more like this. Really interested in James' big plan too
Great video, got me stoked to go ride.
Nice to see someone bikepacking with road tires and deep section wheels! I cycled from Stockholm to Amsterdam with 58mm wheels and 28mm VIttoria Corsa Control tires this summer. I chose to leave the camping gear home and sleep at hotels, though.
From Russia with love, lots of of hospitality, always welcome 😃✌🏻
Who else wanted to adjust Jenny's helmet straps? She did an epic ride for sure. Solo women around the world. Not many can or could do that! Biggest tips are travel light and carb up hard!
Never thought about bike packing but after a few of these GCN videos I'm making plans and checking out gear!!!!
I remember when I started cycle camping nearly 30 years ago. I went round and pestered everyone I could to glean a bit of knowledge. The temptation is always to take too much stuff "just in case". The advice of the day was set out the absolute minimum you need and leave half of it behind. The first tour I ever did I think I got the weight down to 14KG but 3KG of that was my tent. Actually I still use that tent to this day but only as a base camp. We're so lucky these days that you can get a decent tent for about £100 which only weights about 1.5KG.
James, a couple comments about your gear:
1) are you aware that you can't take gas cannisters on a plane? If you're planning to cook with gas in Argentina then you either need to make sure you can easily get compatible cannisters or buy a stove and cannister when you're there. You'll also need to make sure you have space available for a spare cannister as it's really difficult to tell how much gas is left in one without a digital scale (which you won't be carrying).
2) Make sure your sleeping bag is at least double-bagged. Don't trust that your saddle bag won't leak. Assuming you have a down sleeping bag, even the slightest leak can render it useless.
ATB Paula
I wish you uploaded this in 1440p/4k! It looks like there was some great scenery ruined by UA-cam's compression
Makes me want to do an adventure... not around the world adventure, but I sure can expand my horizon. Great stuff.
Came to the comments to suggest Jenny joining GCN... Ya'll beat me to it. She's got a fantastic charisma and is really natural on camera.
She is so infectious. She is lovely
Hope to see Jenny in more videos! Well done James for a successful overnighter. Might I suggest a trip over to Canada to do the Canadian section of the GDMBR?
All right, great bicycle 'touring video' . In my mind, bikepacking is when you leave the roads and hit the cart trails and single track. Certainly was very good for a beginner overnighter and learning situational class. At least there was no whining but rather laughter and good times. :)
Definitely a big mental thing. Sleeping out on your on can be a big hurdle for a lot of people. I did it for the first time in many many years last year. In the middle of the night a pheasant (I didn't know what it was at the time) came down to the nearby lake. It's call sounded like , to my mad fantasy, a crazy rabbit with a chain saw !!! It was a long night .. lol
But sounds like you had a fantastic night! Have you done it since?
@@gcn Yeah, of course ! Once you realise you're not going to get mugged by rabbits or eaten by wolves it's a very satisfying experience. I do it regularly and I've even managed to get friends out for a try.
Totally agree.Would love to see Jenny join gcn team! Wish I`d spoken with her before I went bikepacking in Scotland. The midges were maneating, and my bivvy bag wasn't the right kit, because if you shut the zip you couldn't breath properly, if you left it open a crack, they came in to attack you!!!
omg I love her accent and attitude
Me too! 😍 Where's the accent from? Is it Scottish?
@@rainbowlable Yeah, very Invernesian sounding.
