The backbone of the whole NF Journey! 🤯 His parents separated in the tween years. The kids bounced around a bit because of his mother's boyfriend abusing him and his sister. He had a lot of trauma through his earlier years, therefore his mind found ways to deal with the pain. When his mother ODs, that really scared him.
I agree with the point u made about how well the best of the best artists understand the goal is connecting the listener to the lyrics so much so that they cant help but see themselves in them. The best ones are masters at conveying emotion through inflection of specific words, specific syllables of those words all used by the artist to help direct the listener to understand the point they are trying to make. Sure i am a bit biased but in my opinion this is an area where NF shines and u will notice very early on that his ability to do this was apparent from day 1.
In this song, we learn that NR personifies his emotions. We meet Fear and learn NF sleeps with Regret. These two characters will be back in future songs.
This is one of the rare tracks where I am glad there isn’t a video for it. The mental image he paints with the lyrics would be lost if there was a video.
@@josheddie7622 completely agree. Not discrediting the magnificence of his cinematic videos, but this one, in particular, is far more poignant when the listener creates the imagery.
Its also interesting to note that there are 2 separate music videos where we see his mansion. We first see it in intro 2 where its super run down, dark and depressing. We don't see it again until "Hope" is released and the difference in how they decided they wanted it to look is cant be understated.
Im glad you’re picking up on the lyrical gems in this song! This is what NF does the most for me, and why I love him, he makes me look at myself and he points out the things you don’t want to acknowledge even for yourself. He’s so damn good! Every time I’ve heard one of his songs I feel like he punched me in the gut.. in the best way possible. He puts me down on the ground again. Forever thankful 🙏 I’m happy to take the NF journey with you
It's so awesome to see how NF can effect each person so differently yet make everyone be able to relate to his deep complicated yet simple beautiful lyrics and experiences, like you and many others have said the man is a genius! He makes the most ugly horrible traumas have a sense of beauty by always adding a glimpse to what great things could be on the other side with some of the "what if's" like he hasn't lost the faith that there's still hope and things can still get better.. if that makes sense? Loved seeing your reaction and appreciation to this song and how it was making you think the things that others were also relating to but in your own way, hopefully all this makes some sort of sense haha. Thank you!!!💜
Great reaction brother, I am excited to see the rest of the journey, if you are this intrigued now, he levels up every album. I don't know of an artist that is this consistent with his craft, he doesn't take a song off, he doesn't put out trash at all. You may not love every song but he gives it in every song.
There is a term that many creatives(writers, Musicians, etc) know well. "Precious Pain." "Hauntingly beautiful" is another of the same reference. Many of us are drawn to this because it is universally relatable. Your commentary about parental issues demonstrates this well. We, as a general, tend to discount the impact of our childhood experience. The reality is we are left with our perception of all relationships based on the first, and most important, that we had...our parents. Even when a parent us doing their very best, it does not preclude error as we are all imperfect.
Excellent reaction and commentary! One of many things I appreciate about NF is how thought provoking soon many of his songs are. See You on Your next NF reaction. 🩸🗝😎
Been waiting for you to do this one since you did the first NF song. Great reaction, Justin 😊❤️ Please do me the favour of not talking down to yourself, you are smart, it comes through in your videos. Sure there are levels to how smart one is but from hearing you explain your understanding of psychology, being introspective and catching bars is enough for me to know you are a smart person. It might be meant as a joke (I don't know) but remember that your brain is always listening to what you say about yourself and believe everything even when its meant as a joke. I use to do the same until I realised how harmful it was to my self esteem. Can't wait to see what is next on the NF journey for you 😁
You’re definitely right about the trauma. No one wants to relive it , but it has to be to move past it. At least that’s what my therapist said lol I’m in therapy for childhood trauma and it’s fricken hard to not feel it all over again. This song is the perfect example of how it feels to not want to let anyone in or to show them the real you. They don’t get it. Great reaction ! Glad you did an NF reaction !
One of the things that i take for granted sometimes when it comes to NFs pen is his ability to write songs that often echo almost word for word thoughts i have always lacked an ability to make sense of...insane
Fleurie may be NF's Dido? Eminem sampled the first verse of Dido's song "Thank You" in "Stan" also on a later track NF samples another female's song chorus on ONLY from Sasha Sloan's track 'The Only' pitched up to Fivel goes west Somewhere Out There mouse voice... capturing that same theme of there being another person out there who understands and relates in a similar way... ;)
NF always goes hard with lyrics, But I think Mansion and Nate are his best one when it comes to that. I really like your reactions! Can't wait for the next one already!

I’m so glad you’re actually taking in everything the way it’s meant to be … you’re going to get a lot out of this journey. Welcome to the “Outcasts”

I would go as far to say NF made his career off this the foundation this sound built
NF is so good at saying things that people feel but dont know how to say themselves.
I see what you did there

100%

Would it be fair to say we do end up getting a video for "mansion" albeit written from a different perception/perspective?

A beautiful metaphorical and literal depiction of a persons mind dealing with trauma and negative experiences😍 one of my favorite songs of all times

I've been listening to NF since highschool and for real, Mansion has put me out there more than my words.

Yes, it is the substance of what NF that makes him powerful, not clever lines. You will hear some of those too.
I can't wait for you to get to Hope
But I'm glad he didn't start there. Hope means so much more to those who were along for the ride!
Commenting for comment sake.
