For many years (or installments), Kyo was the rushdown character while Iori was the shoto/rekka hybrid. But in KOF 13, Kyo reverted to his classic form while Iori became the rushdown character. IMO, that was a creative way for the devs to keep the two characters' fighting styles different while still following the lore (in which Iori temporarily lost his flames)
My introduction to Kensou was in KOF '99, bka EX Kensou. Dude was incredible in that game! His rush moves were clutch! I had no idea he used fireballs or had any psychic abilities other than the fact that he would glow during his SDM.
KOF XI is pretty much one of if not the best time sink if you're a Kyo main tbh, it's so nutty that in his version there, he uses both fireballs and Rekkas meaning he gets the strengths of both being a rushdown and having a decent zoning tool, and if u prefer the NESTS version, EX Kyo will sort you out with his Leader Desperation move putting him in Max Mode (after mashing taunt, that is). Plus with the tag system, Kyo's one of the characters that's actually fine with any position. He can be the battery (first character) since his rekkas and ground projectile pressure lets him build meter quick (and he doesn't exactly need supers to dish out good damage), user (2nd), or anchor (you do have to practice his Leader move a bit tho since it can only be performed when close to the enemy, which isn't hard to dreamcancel from his Shiki 182 super)
I want that also for Kyo, and maybe Chizuru (Maki's moveset from 2003 was really cool)... Imagine an awakened Saved treasures, with a shoto-rekka Kyo Kusanagi, a flaming claw Iori Yagami and a Chizuru Kagura blessed by Maki, to face when you play as Awakened Orochi team in KOF XVI.
Thank you for including the Orochi team. It was a really smart move for SNK to make them playable in KOFXV. Playing the vastly different styles with all three characters can make all kinds of insane combinations! Great list, Shoryugame!
Claw Iori's maiden masher finisher is his most iconic move to me and IMO was a great alternative to his original Maiden Masher. If he was in Super Smash Bros., the claw maiden masher finisher would have been awesome as an up throw animation.
First thought that comes to mind when you see Charge Robert (AKA 'Guile' Robert) crouching: *'It's the end...'* The dude has have so many changes over the years that SNK could make him a stance character. Imagine Robert as a stance character. That would be awesome and a clever way to make the fans that miss Charge Robert very happy ^_^
Honestly speaking, Claw Iori was really great and a fun character to use due to how his moveset worked. He also had a different command normal (df+C) which was a good overhead. Takuma's Kof XIII and 02UM versions are my favourite as well.
Personally, I hope that one day we get Graduate Shingo, either with martial arts techniques he learned from his time traveling with the Kusanagi Clan or flame techniques he manages pull off through only training with Saisyu a lá Vegeta. I don't wanna end his status as a humourous character, but I want him to have his time as a badass, too.
A character can be both humourous and badass at the same time. Shingo is already like that especially in KOF XI, easily the best version of Shingo gameplay wise
@@meganinten0078 Agreed, but I do wanna actually see him keep his sort of pseudo-joke character niche filled, and have the badassery be separate. Like, I think Dan in Street Fighter is absolutely fantastic, and a good Dan player is badass being able to use the kit intended for jokes to get wins. But if you were to put in an additional Dan that's unconscious and using the Satsui No Hado while sleepwalking and actually being an Evil Ryu-esque effortless badass, I would be over the moon for it. I want that sort of two-sided dichotomy, not just an amalgamation of both into a single character.
@MegaNinten 007 I saw a combo video about Shingo in XI and how one of his special moves builds meter quick. Shingo is absolutely a force to reckon with given SNK's move list describing Shingo being a inoffensive rushdown fighter who doesn't rely on meter too much.😶
@@keondramcintyre3444 I guess it'd be more like if there was a version of Goku trying really hard to hold back as a character, and then Ultra Instinct in another. Goku's more of just a goofy guy than a joke character.
Excellent video! About Blue Mary, in KOF Maximum Impact Regulation A she has the moveset of both her normal and EX version. I totally agree with the #1 of this list. It would have been better if Iori gave up his powers/curse once and for all (or just die at the end of KOF 97) I find Claw Iori better than classic Iori. Not only because of his unique and fun gameplay but also because it was the biggest change of Iori's character after KOF 97 But nop, fans would complain if Iori is not the same as he was in the Orochi Saga. I would love to see Kusanagi returning as DLC Not only because of his moveset but because he has the most unique personality compare to Kyo-1 and Kyo-2. In fact, his personality, voice and lines are the reason why he is cool. Besides, K9999 (Krohnen) mentioned Kusanagi in KOF XV so that means Kusanagi (the clone made by NESTS) still exists or existed.
KOF 2002 isn't really Canon, it's just a fun Dream Match Game full of Fan-Service with returning Dead Characters that have no effect on the Lore (until KOF 15 anyway), There is no real Explanation about the Kusanagi Clone's Existence somewhere in the KOF Canon besides being just an Illusion Puppet controlled by Chizuru in KOF 2003, it's either they will have to make a Prequel Manga or Light Novel to explore the Events of what happened in between 2001 and 2003, or Retconned some of the Story Pieces to make Kusanagi fit somewhere in the NESTS Saga.
I forgot to tell you, in KOFMI2 and MIA, there are alt. versions of Kyo and Terry named Kyo Kusanagi Classic and Wild Wolf. The game counts them as separate characters. Unlike Armor Ralf, which is just Ralf but with armor in all his attacks, those two have differences and unique tools compare to their normal counterpart. Kyo Classic plays like shoto 'fireball' Kyo and Kusanagi with some Supers that normal Kyo doesn't have plus the ability to manually charge special gauge like in the classic KOF games. Wild Wolf, which is Terry in his Garou outfit, doesn't have many specials and supers like normal Terry but he makes more damage plus he has the braking mechanic from Garou MOW for many of his moveset, even Supers. In fact, I dare to say, he is one of the most powerful versions of Terry ever, being top 3 in the tierlist of MI Regulation A
Rekka Kensou was really cool, too. Wish he had more command moves, though. All and all, my favorite iteration of him is actually XI's. Even if "melee" Kensou dishes out more damage. EX characters need to make a comeback.
I'm surprised that Riot of the Blood Iori isn't on here, or Leona's Riot of the Blood alternative. And, to be fair, Iori always fought with claw slashes; he rarely threw punches.

It's probably worth doing a video comparison for every EX character variation across different series, just seeing Shadow Andy's fighting style makes me want it in KOF15.
Thanks so much for making this! It's fun to be reminded of the EX forms, and the honorable mentions at the end did a great job of showcasing some badass supers.
Side note: It is generally viewed that 98UMFE's Geese's are at a similar level, both high tier characters, slightly below top tier, just one is more rushdown and the other is more zoning oriented
Favorite EX Character would have to be EX Yamazaki in 98UMFE, they gave him more rushdown tools, and he gets his OTG stomps, a very fast dp+B, extremely fast snake arm cancel that allow for close C to combo into other normals, a new level of his drill super, and more. He loses meterless command grab and dust kick, but he really doesn't suffer from dust kick being gone since it was nerfed a lot in 98.

My favorite is Mai and Geese, especially Geese because Mai is already good in the game, but normal geese sucked in my opinion due to the short ranged Reppukens.
Man, I really mess Andy's old play style and is one of the biggest reasons why I still play the older KOF games. I could never understand why SNK decided to revert everyone to be played different in KOFXIV where characters like Benimaru doesn't have his break dance kick special, Andy being a zoner again, and many other things.
I miss this version of Andy so much. Fast paced, in and out offense that I feel fit the ninja style they claim him to be. Probably the biggest gap in personal usage between all ex characters. This Andy being one of my mains, while og / current Andy seeing practically no play time.
I know, that KoF Maximum Impact lore video haven't got that many views, but I would still love to see lore video for the handheld KoF EX. It's an obscure title that very few played, so it would be interesting to see some sort of recap for it!
I know you talked about Guile Robert but he also has another form that combines a little bit of both forms, his Kof11 version, which I like to call drunk Robert because of the weird idle stance he has and also his hair looking kinda wild.
I'm wondering when he'll cover a top 20 best or weirdest alternative costumes in KOF. I can think of numerous Maximum Impact costumes that could fill that list.
Mai's alternate costume would be in the top 3 best. The best costume for Mai! She looks cool and cuter with short hair 😊 K's alternate costume is also cool and a reference to Bruce Lee 😎 Which is clever because K' fighting style is based on Jeet Kune Do the same style Bruce Lee's practiced.
First of all, Iori is not a zoner, but a shoto. I remember in your Zoners video u said u would talk about powerless Kensou in a following video, I expected a video covering the Rushdowns in kid, but after this, I ain't discouraged. With this list, SNK have the perfect excuse to make EX VERSIONS next season, who do u think is worth paying for. Also, did any other vessel notice that with his purple flames and new, design, Chris may be M Bison, the win pose gave it away.
RIP Claw Iori. He was fun while he lasted. His command grab had such a sick animation. I knew when SNK made Classic Iori DLC in XIII, Claw Iori was finished. As a Kyo fan, once he got the rekkas I never went back. I do not like classic Kyo at all.
I thought #1 alternative character was going to be Iori Bogard! He has a mash up of Terry Bogard and Iori Yagami moves. His jab attack is his hair and has the best victory laugh ever.
I kinda wish KOF sold all these alternative characters as DLC in KOF XV. Not only the characters, their other clothes to use in whatever version of the character, just to confuse the opponent. Every character from basically every team has an alternative version. FF, AOF, LADIES, IKARI, PSYCHO SOLDIER and KIM KAPHWAN have alternative versions that are just awesome in their own way.
Claw iori is open, amazing and something else and if you think a perfect rival I think of nests style kyo I thought he will be in this list because he is something else just like claw iori. Btw nice video, sorry I was not able to watch you skull girls lore story but I will watch it sooner. Thanks for this video sir. 👍👍👍🙂👍👍🙂🙂🙂🙂.
In addition to the classic moves, Kusanagi also talks like a "chinpira" (low level thug). Kyo may come as arrogant but he still remains his class when talking.
Omg, please never, ever bring back Roberts charge character lol. I hated that form so much! He was stronger though, I will give him that. Honestly I miss Kyo's 427 Shiki Hikigane where he did the uppercut and then the slow, or fast, follow up punch. It was like getting a critical with Shingo when you pulled it off against someone lol. Great list Shoryu!
Nightmare Geese is #1 for me!! How about Wild Iori and Leona? They are also my go to as well, though gameplay wise not biggest fan of KOF13 Iori I truly admire SNK being consistent and going so far as to completely change his fighting style because the Purple Flame is stolen by Ash Crimson most Fighting Games series wouldn’t do this out of pure laziness and rely on a lazy retcon or inconsistent plot narrative looking at nrs “MK” the kings of retconning and lore desecrating sometimes Tekken is guilty of this but for better or worst SNK sticks to their guns and that truly commands respect. That being said and I respect it I still don’t like post 95 Kyo moveset change just cause I like the play style of Kyo in the first 2 games really simplistic like Terry Bogard though Kusanagi and one of the Kyo clones retain pre 96 Moveset. I also like all the alternative AOF characters sets like Ryo Sakazaki and also Geese Howard when their Kouken and Reppukken actually shoots like a long range projectile I hate the short ranges they made those moves in their primaries. Obviously Orochi Awakened is a must LOVE their powers in their Awakened forms that mirror rivalries to both Team Japan and Sacred Treasures Team.
I love the Orochi trio... But in 97 they felt like downgrade than upgrade.Or the play style didn't suit me much. But, well I played Shermie the best when she was a grappler... Also 97 Orochi Chris LV3 DM (Which was his coolest move ) leave him with a really big opening.
@@ShoryuGame Shes not a very easy character but when you get the hang of her and see what people can do with her its very obvious she is the better character
About Robert, it was possible before 99 to play the EX version of him in 98. I just wanted to ask why didn't make to this list the Orochi team and Leona, if those also are EX versions.
Honestly I didn't know what to say about it. There are different versions of Omega Rugal (95's version plays nothing like 98 that is very different from 2002's which has nothing to do with XV's).
Blue Mary could’ve been replaced with Orochi Leona or Omega Rugal. Her mentioning seemed peculiarly negated….so I wasn’t sure to feel convinced (laughs). But hell…. I’ve used ex Mary less than anyone’s ex form in the series.
I love that Claw Iori seems way more like an animal while he fights. He even growls like one during level 2 maiden masher there
I'm still waiting for a character called "YAGAMI" with Claw Iori's moveset

Man, I really mess Andy's old play style and is one of the biggest reasons why I still play the older KOF games. I could never understand why SNK decided to revert everyone to be played different in KOFXIV where characters like Benimaru doesn't have his break dance kick special, Andy being a zoner again, and many other things.
5:18 actually normal geese is fine, the only reason why he's banned is because he's not playable in the arcade version
11:16 that ex yamazaki clip was uncalled for lmao
haha, Rugal's AI isn't the smartest.
Even omega rugal falls for it in 98 vanilla
No Omega Rugal is so strange, he become one of the most brutal bosses in fighting games history.
I miss this version of Andy so much. Fast paced, in and out offense that I feel fit the ninja style they claim him to be.
Probably the biggest gap in personal usage between all ex characters. This Andy being one of my mains, while og / current Andy seeing practically no play time.
EX Kensou and Robert were a nightmare to deal with in pvp during 2002 UM
Another awesome content!
Btw congratulations for World Cup Semi-Finals bro! I hope you will win the world cup!
Thank you! I hope so too!
Another Iori was introduced in kof 2000 as a helper and it was pretty good tbh.
I know, that KoF Maximum Impact lore video haven't got that many views, but I would still love to see lore video for the handheld KoF EX. It's an obscure title that very few played, so it would be interesting to see some sort of recap for it!
Another great video! I feel like Riot Iori, Orochi Leona and Omega Rugal could have been included (honorable mention at least) in this video too.
I feel that the problem with including wild iori and Leona is that their move sets don’t change at all, they just play more aggressive
@@cckmyuxun3689 True, I can agree to that. In terms of how they look/ character wise, it’s an alternative form. Move set wise, nothing different.
I know you talked about Guile Robert but he also has another form that combines a little bit of both forms, his Kof11 version, which I like to call drunk Robert because of the weird idle stance he has and also his hair looking kinda wild.
You're right. I think it's the same stance he had in AoF 3.
I'm wondering when he'll cover a top 20 best or weirdest alternative costumes in KOF.
I can think of numerous Maximum Impact costumes that could fill that list.
Mai's alternate costume would be in the top 3 best.
The best costume for Mai!
She looks cool and cuter with short hair 😊
K's alternate costume is also cool and a reference to Bruce Lee 😎
Which is clever because K' fighting style is based on Jeet Kune Do the same style Bruce Lee's practiced.
I really love the Capcom version of Mai Shiranui in Capcom vs SNK series
First of all, Iori is not a zoner, but a shoto. I remember in your Zoners video u said u would talk about powerless Kensou in a following video, I expected a video covering the Rushdowns in kid, but after this, I ain't discouraged. With this list, SNK have the perfect excuse to make EX VERSIONS next season, who do u think is worth paying for. Also, did any other vessel notice that with his purple flames and new, design, Chris may be M Bison, the win pose gave it away.
I always had fun when i play as team awakened orochi and 95 Kyo however i got to get use to flameless Iori
His jab attack is his hair and has the best victory laugh ever.
im convinced SNK started the whole clone character thing back then which i didnt mind because at least they made them fun
I wish more games did this
Iori from kof xiii is so fun to play
Claw Iori Yagami in XIII is Unique
Great video
I thought that Rugal would be in the top five 😅
Aah..finally on the right track
Welcome back Shoryugame
😆😆😆
Thanks!
In latam. claw iori is called "iori peluquero"
Thanks for your support!
@@ShoryuGame 🙂👍 always bro your video is quality hard work and op narration .
In addition to the classic moves, Kusanagi also talks like a "chinpira" (low level thug).
Kyo may come as arrogant but he still remains his class when talking.
I love claw Iori's design
I agree: Iori Freeman Is the #1, But I think RB2 (ex) Terry Bogard was missing (instead kensou). That versión Is the Best ever.
Thanks!
I love Nightmare Geese He is my Favourite Alternative Version of Geese Howard Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
That was a great list!
Glad you think so!
I always thought Ryo fought the same in each game. I guess I have to go back and play some of the old KOF's.
Finally new video..✌️✌️
I was waiting for new video..🔥🔥
Hope you enjoyed it!
I like the orochi iori the one where he hunches over like a feral zombie. That one is crazy aggressive.
I agree. But he has the same moves as regular Iori.
Someone gotta tell Shoryu EX mary is nuts and top tier as hell in 98UMFE, that install super is some wild stuff
Then I must be very bad playing her.
@@ShoryuGame Shes not a very easy character but when you get the hang of her and see what people can do with her its very obvious she is the better character
Saw the title and said "Kyo better be in this list"
Mr. karate has one of the coolest standing pose animation
I agree.
Wich one
I wish they combine his claw iori move set with flame iori and create a more powerful version of him.
That's too much moves for one character.
素晴らしい兄弟!
Amazing new kof vedio I like that kensou is in your list because he us really underrated
Thanks!
#Like!! Keep up with the good work!!
Thanks! Will do!
Morocco is in the semi final 🇲🇦🇲🇦🇲🇦🇲🇦🇲🇦💪🏻
dude this is kof but yeah exiting stuf
Yes we are!
@@ShoryuGame Golly.
I didn't know you were from Morocco!
Congrats!
'02 UM Nightmare Geese is Indeed OP.
Does striker krizalid (KOF 2001) count?
I totally prefer Ex Kensou over the regular one, because is more unique and less of a Athena with other sprite
Damn, I know now why ex blue Mary at kof all star has that moveset
About Robert, it was possible before 99 to play the EX version of him in 98. I just wanted to ask why didn't make to this list the Orochi team and Leona, if those also are EX versions.
They play the same, only faster. And Ex Robert in 98 isn't a charge character.
How about Rugal and Omega Rugal??? Or do u consider them as different characters???
Honestly I didn't know what to say about it. There are different versions of Omega Rugal (95's version plays nothing like 98 that is very different from 2002's which has nothing to do with XV's).
@@ShoryuGame Oh, I get it now.
Nice
This was a great list.
Thank you!
EX blue mary has a "reverse" shun goku satsu in RB2
ShoryuGame, you accent makes me ask why are you not in Black Panther 2?
The pay wasn't enough!
SNK Should Combine Flameless/Claw Iori from XIII & Orochi Iori from '97 into a New Character called Yagami or Feral Iori.
Robert kof 10 and 11 have different playstyle too
Who would win a fight shingo or flameless lori
isn't claw Iori moveset just Freeman's moveset granted that would make Freeman a Yagami
Geese will forever be known to me as “Cheepo McCheepy Grab You Out Of Supers Bull Crap Guy.” 😡
I wish the Team CYS Fused Their Dual Movesets into One.
Ml got me into kof
Blue Mary could’ve been replaced with Orochi Leona or Omega Rugal. Her mentioning seemed peculiarly negated….so I wasn’t sure to feel convinced (laughs). But hell…. I’ve used ex Mary less than anyone’s ex form in the series.
For some reason im better using claw iori then classic iori, since i can't pull 3 hit combo (2,1,4 Punch) consistently
