We started with Schrader, then Presta was used because rims were so narrow, no reason to use them anymore. They don't hold air any better, the ends bend , break or unscrew and get stuck in your pump. Schrader for life🤘
Gotta say, I haven't noticed that many issues with presta. I've never had the valve stem come out in a pump. Had a couple times where the valve got clogged with old sealant but a paperclip quickly fixed that. Tubeless tires have always seated easy with a normal floor pump.

If you want to name some negatives, which there are none, please do try to inform yourself first. :) Also compared to the bore valves, the clik valves are not only tubeless, but you can use them on any already existing systems and just exchange your current valves with them.

I'm curious to see how people find them. There have been radial bike tires in the past and people generally didn't like them at all. You either need super stiff sidewalls like motorcycle tires, but then the tire is too heavy. Or you need to use way more air pressure in the tire, negating the increased contact patch. Sounds like schwalbes new tires aren't truly radial though, just more in the radial direction lol.
Reserve Wheels has the Fillmore Tubeless valve. I have them on four different bikes, two road, two MTB, and they work perfectly. They design locks the valve tighter which results in less air leakage and they don't clog with sealant. More robust too, no issue with bending them.
Yes Owen, new valves are important!!! Out of all the high end gubbins you guys have talked about the valves are probably the only thing that Joe Blogs will actually put his hands on! And I think it's about time we had an update on valves cos the two options we've had aren't great! Presta leak, bend and clog very easily and shrader is a no no for high pressure! I'm looking forward to getting some of the Schwalbe valves. It's not a new valve as such I don't think, it looks like a Air Hose connector but smaller.
The old myth of shrader not being good for high pressure. If you have any experience with Mountanbikes you should know better. Do you have a fork or shock with an Air Spring? Or a dropper post? What kind of valve does it use? How high is the pressure?
@@aabac127 yeh you're right! They are smaller than the valve on an inner tube though! Or the one on my Fox Shock is! I can't remember about the one on my pike forks I had them converted to coil years ago but if they are the same size I stand corrected👍! I still like the look of the Schwalbe valve though. Push on pull off easy.
@@iansingleton Plenty of shocks use exactly the same valve core as you'll find on a Schrader tube. The only issue with them - which is an issue with any valve that's not metal on metal sealing, is that the rubber in the seals deflects over time (It happens faster the higher the pressure), causing the button in the centre of the valve to move upwards, to the point where many shock pumps will leak all the air out of the shock while unscrewing. Easily solved by swapping in a new valve core, and the old valve will still work perfectly in a tyre.
That steering damper isn’t a new design. They bought the design off of Hopey. it’s been around for at least 15 years. It didn’t sell or catch on at $200 a unit. So I don’t know what makes them think it’s going to sell at over $500. They must be stupid.

15:28 since I work in a bike shop, I can and am currently testing the clik valve and it's so much nicer, just pull off the cap, bonk on the pump, do your thing, snatch it off and stick on the cap, so damn fast and convenient I'm already annoyed when pumping up my MTB, as I've only got one set and it's on my gravel bike That's how nice they are Also, there's so much air flow, some sealant residue gets left on the pumpheads inner sidewalls But even with sealant going through the valve every time, they still sound like clean metal when letting air out of them, absolute king Hope this gets accepted as the one new standard over time
Pinion is the only competent option on the market, so if mainstream manufacturers just made frames compatible with these, and belt drive, they'd sell plenty. There is a French company doing mid mount gearboxes too, but the gear range isn't enough for climbing and descending actual mountains (About 400%, which will cover commuting and most trail centre riding, all if using uplifts), and it uses the same mount as the Pinion gearbox.

I've been running Stan's Schrader valves on my tubeless setup for 5 years now I have never clogged and I can put air in my tire with every single other air device available everywhere. Not saying everybody should run out and buy them but I will say that I've had excellent results with zero complaints

The simplest way to fix a failed SRAM derailleur is to buy a Shimano cable operated setup, fit it to your bike and never have to worry about it falling apart, wearing out without giving you plenty of warning, or losing charge ever again.
I am new to mountain biking and want to buy my first real bike to start my journey. Yet, I am curious about what the best options are. I don't want to go in completely blindly, of course. I decided to start with a second-hand bike because I need to adapt to the sport first. I did some BMXing in my younger days. The three second-hand mountain bikes that I have an eye on are the Btwin Rockrider 530S, Haibike Phantom Tension, and an oldie but a goodie, the Giant NRS4. All three are full-suspension bikes. The Haibike has some extra modifications like air suspension front and back with locking, hydraulic brakes, clipless pedals, etc. All of the bikes are size large, and I am between 1.85 and 1.90 meters tall. I am also curious about how upgradable these bikes are. Any advise for a beginner? Thanks in advance! Ps, I am interested in going to parks like Winterberg, Wales, Greenhill, Portes du Soleil, Sölden etc.

As a professional shop bike mechanic, we do not need another valve, honestly I would prefer everything gp to Schrader as evert gas station is set up as Schrader, honestly with as strong as today's wheels are there is no reason to have to use the smaller Presta valve to keep more material there in the which is what I was always told that's why you don't drill out presta's for Schrader.
I've drilled out quite a few narrowish MTB rims for Schraeder and have never had one fail. Better than being stuck miles from anywhere on a spin and finding the last spare tube the group has won't fit the valve hole on your bike anyway 🙂.

Sadly adding electronics, especially those that need a phone app (Which the manufacturer can change or disable on a whim, making our parts useless) to systems that don't need them, absolutely is the future. That's not something anyone who's not a billionaire profiting from it should be happy about though.
I was considering going over to the t type transmission, but I have invested in 5 Dev cranks, and I have not found anyone who is making a compatible crossover kit to use them. So for me for now it's a no go.
What does Owen think of the WheelTop RDS-OX YQ Wireless mountain bike shifting. The rear mech comes in 3 lengths. A 58mm, a 75mm and a 93mm lengths. The shifters also work with 3 to 14 speed cassettes.
I think gearboxes are going to be big in the near future but the no shifting under load is still a bit of a deal breaker, and I'm not convinced that a belt offers a substantial advantage over a decent chain.
Have you ever used a gearbox before? Shifting under load is irrelevant because you can shift instantly by pausing the pedal stroke or while the crank is at top or bottom dead centre rather than waiting a pedal stroke for the shift to finish like on derailleur systems. Belt drives offer a massive advantage that they eliminate all chain maintenance from the bike. Imagine going for a long very muddy spin, getting home and hosing the worst of the dirt off the bike and just putting it away wet and being totally confident it will work perfectly the next time you take it out. Belt drives last so well that the most common mechanical intervention on the bike will be changing pads on the disk brakes, followed by oil changes on the gearbox (If you ignore the ridiculously short service intervals on every suspension product on sale at this point - proper open bath coil and oil forks were fit and forget components too 😞).
@@peglor I've used gear boxes and own an Alfine hub. Shifting under load is an issue when climbing, particularly on a MTB. I'm well aware of how belts work, but they're still less efficient than a chain. A single speed chain can be pretty easy to clean and lasts an incredibly long time. And feel free to go back to the lousy forks of the past. I don't love servicing my forks but I like the performance of them.
@@pbandjosh If by lousy you mean the buttery smoothness of the air assist open bath coil Marzocchis from 20 years ago, then I would absolutely love to go back to that. With modern lower leg castings, the weight penalty is in the low hundreds of grammes compared to modern forks, but well worth it for the reliability. The combination of extra oil and much lower pressure behind the seals since most of the spring work is done by an actual spring with the air adding arising rate, means less seal pressure to keep the oil and air in, and less seal friction to keep the fork smooth. A gearbox setup that allows gears to be preselected and shifts a top and bottom dead centre (All easily done with existing mechanical ) will feel like it's shifting under power as well as shifting way more quickly than a derailleur where you have to wait for the chain to get half way around the cassette will be better on climbs. If you coordinate it well you can shift at that dead spot with the Alfine no problem. The reason The Alfine, particularly the 11 speed one, sucks off road is it puts the weight in the wrong place, namely as unsprung weight on the back axle, and it uses roller clutches instead of ratchet freewheel, which means the take up is always spongy, especially 2nd gear, which is borderline unusable under power. The limited gear range is an issue for spins that go outside curated MTB trails too. I still love my Alfine for doing what it was designed to do, namely very low maintenance commuting.
Riders too incompetent to use the valves already on the market are guaranteed to not be competent enough to use the new ones either. A solution looking for a problem, but marketing trumps engineering every time, so there's every change they'll make a fortune flogging them.
I’ve been riding mtb’s for 8 years, XC, bike parks and trail centres. Never have I ever smashed my derailleur. Just don’t know what the big fuss is about gear boxes. I’ve little interest them.
Try riding unmaintained trails and deep mud and it'll start to make sense. Smashing your derailleur takes serious effort on maintained bike specific trails.
i believe bikes are getting too electronic and fiddly/ expensive to service and repair. they are becoming like motorbikes. motors,internal gears, electronic gears, electronic setpost. too much automated and battery . theres hardly any difference between emtb and electrix motorbike. rather have them manual and be able to fix them youself.

pinarello geometry is not modern.. 64,5 st angle and 68 ht angle is like specialized geo from 2017. Bike is stiff and unforgiving, it is not pleasure to ride it. But pauline and pidcock want it like this, they have great descending skills and conti race king is by far the fastest xc tire on the market. 20watts faster on pair on hard pack like ninos rubbish maxxis. Some courses are technical, but lot of them are so easy like on olympics and on them pinarello dominates.

Well take your pick on women side as there are two women who beat Greg's win - Rachel Atherton has more World champs wins & way more world cup wins - but then there's Anne-Caroline Chausson - who's world champs and world cup win record is legendary and across DH & Dual Slalom & 4X - and she's also won an Olympic BMX gold medal too - no doubt Greg is amazing - really nice bloke too - but yep its not match Rachel or ACC yet! Fillmore valves, do give it a try! Got them on both my bikes, never going back to presta, endless replacing valve cores, waste of money.
If the new Sram electronic derailleur is only OEM, how do you replace it if it breaks?

cheaper t-type groupset with no more bendy derailieur hangers is exciting. pretty soon there should be lower tier of the entire groupset and by the time i buy my next bike i will be able to afford it :D
As a professional shop bike mechanic, we do not need another valve, honestly I would prefer everything gp to Schrader as evert gas station is set up as Schrader, honestly with as strong as today's wheels are there is no reason to have to use the smaller Presta valve to keep more material there in the which is what I was always told that's why you don't drill out presta's for Schrader.
I've drilled out quite a few narrowish MTB rims for Schraeder and have never had one fail. Better than being stuck miles from anywhere on a spin and finding the last spare tube the group has won't fit the valve hole on your bike anyway 🙂.
@@peglor oh same here, the owner of the shop I'm at now doesn't like it when I do that but in alot of cases it's better for the customer if I do. I get the theory of not doing it but the application says different.

Sadly adding electronics, especially those that need a phone app (Which the manufacturer can change or disable on a whim, making our parts useless) to systems that don't need them, absolutely is the future. That's not something anyone who's not a billionaire profiting from it should be happy about though.
Mercedes tried using soy based plastic wiring harness material. Rodents loved it.
My ultimate goal is to spec my next down country bike with a fully soy based plant suspension… shock and fork!
The sram T-type GX is amazing unless you forget to tighten up the rear axle on a ride... and wonder why your shifting is jumping randomly. 😂😂
I was considering going over to the t type transmission, but I have invested in 5 Dev cranks, and I have not found anyone who is making a compatible crossover kit to use them. So for me for now it's a no go.
What does Owen think of the WheelTop RDS-OX YQ Wireless mountain bike shifting. The rear mech comes in 3 lengths. A 58mm, a 75mm and a 93mm lengths. The shifters also work with 3 to 14 speed cassettes.
I saw it at Eurobike - it looks good - but yep I'm yet to ride it so can't really comment on how it feels on the trail?

I think gearboxes are going to be big in the near future but the no shifting under load is still a bit of a deal breaker, and I'm not convinced that a belt offers a substantial advantage over a decent chain.
Have you ever used a gearbox before? Shifting under load is irrelevant because you can shift instantly by pausing the pedal stroke or while the crank is at top or bottom dead centre rather than waiting a pedal stroke for the shift to finish like on derailleur systems.
Belt drives offer a massive advantage that they eliminate all chain maintenance from the bike. Imagine going for a long very muddy spin, getting home and hosing the worst of the dirt off the bike and just putting it away wet and being totally confident it will work perfectly the next time you take it out. Belt drives last so well that the most common mechanical intervention on the bike will be changing pads on the disk brakes, followed by oil changes on the gearbox (If you ignore the ridiculously short service intervals on every suspension product on sale at this point - proper open bath coil and oil forks were fit and forget components too 😞).
@@peglor I've used gear boxes and own an Alfine hub. Shifting under load is an issue when climbing, particularly on a MTB. I'm well aware of how belts work, but they're still less efficient than a chain. A single speed chain can be pretty easy to clean and lasts an incredibly long time.
And feel free to go back to the lousy forks of the past. I don't love servicing my forks but I like the performance of them.
@@pbandjosh If by lousy you mean the buttery smoothness of the air assist open bath coil Marzocchis from 20 years ago, then I would absolutely love to go back to that. With modern lower leg castings, the weight penalty is in the low hundreds of grammes compared to modern forks, but well worth it for the reliability. The combination of extra oil and much lower pressure behind the seals since most of the spring work is done by an actual spring with the air adding arising rate, means less seal pressure to keep the oil and air in, and less seal friction to keep the fork smooth.
A gearbox setup that allows gears to be preselected and shifts a top and bottom dead centre (All easily done with existing mechanical ) will feel like it's shifting under power as well as shifting way more quickly than a derailleur where you have to wait for the chain to get half way around the cassette will be better on climbs. If you coordinate it well you can shift at that dead spot with the Alfine no problem. The reason The Alfine, particularly the 11 speed one, sucks off road is it puts the weight in the wrong place, namely as unsprung weight on the back axle, and it uses roller clutches instead of ratchet freewheel, which means the take up is always spongy, especially 2nd gear, which is borderline unusable under power. The limited gear range is an issue for spins that go outside curated MTB trails too. I still love my Alfine for doing what it was designed to do, namely very low maintenance commuting.
I'd hate to ride a pinion because everyone would think I was riding an ebike.

3years on Katipo gearbox and belt drive… it is NOT for everyone, but it’s ideal for me. Climbing, descending, and jumping is great. XC is not great.

Riders too incompetent to use the valves already on the market are guaranteed to not be competent enough to use the new ones either. A solution looking for a problem, but marketing trumps engineering every time, so there's every change they'll make a fortune flogging them.
I’ve been riding mtb’s for 8 years, XC, bike parks and trail centres. Never have I ever smashed my derailleur.
Just don’t know what the big fuss is about gear boxes. I’ve little interest them.
Try riding unmaintained trails and deep mud and it'll start to make sense. Smashing your derailleur takes serious effort on maintained bike specific trails.
i believe bikes are getting too electronic and fiddly/ expensive to service and repair. they are becoming like motorbikes. motors,internal gears, electronic gears, electronic setpost. too much automated and battery . theres hardly any difference between emtb and electrix motorbike. rather have them manual and be able to fix them youself.
MTB is just a never ending excuse to upgrade with ££££. Cyclo-cross is so much cooler than MTB. Little or no tech, just fitness and skills. 😜

pinarello geometry is not modern.. 64,5 st angle and 68 ht angle is like specialized geo from 2017. Bike is stiff and unforgiving, it is not pleasure to ride it. But pauline and pidcock want it like this, they have great descending skills and conti race king is by far the fastest xc tire on the market. 20watts faster on pair on hard pack like ninos rubbish maxxis. Some courses are technical, but lot of them are so easy like on olympics and on them pinarello dominates.

Well take your pick on women side as there are two women who beat Greg's win - Rachel Atherton has more World champs wins & way more world cup wins - but then there's Anne-Caroline Chausson - who's world champs and world cup win record is legendary and across DH & Dual Slalom & 4X - and she's also won an Olympic BMX gold medal too - no doubt Greg is amazing - really nice bloke too - but yep its not match Rachel or ACC yet!
