A lot of people joke about Nook using Tommy and Timmy for cheap labor, but I like the theory where he built his whole real estate business to support the fact that whenever he lets them work in the store, they keep buying fruit and bugs for hundreds of dollars.
Tom Nook is really generous, he did seem a bit strict in the first game but can you blame him, Redd basically screwed him over, so you gotta cut Tom some slack in the early days, nowadays he's more happy and calm with his life, he definitely wears dad clothes now in New Horizons, he had a grandpa outfit in New life but either way, he's wholesome and I greet him in New Horizons along with Timmy and Tommy every day, whether I'm there to just buy something and pay loans or just got nothing to do, I know I'm an adult but I even come up with conversations using my imagination just to increase the immersion, thinking up how he would sometimes do nice things for Timmy and Tommy or tuck them in at night and read them a bedtime story
I will die on the Tom Nook is a good person hill. He is kind and generous, he adopted two orphans and is raising them as a single father. He gives you (a human and stranger) a house and lets you live there interest free and lets you pay your loan back even 1 bell at a time if you want and doesn't care how long it takes. He wont come and break your knees if you don't pay your loan off ever. And all he asks in return is a few chores. He is a god damn saint.

Dude is nice enough to give you unlimited time to pay off the house! He may charge for other services like moving buildings and such but that stuff takes money and he wants everyone to contribute to the cause. Tom raised these two well and took care of them both like a father figure. Tom Nook is a really good guy deep down but doesn't really show it that much. We also should look at relics of his past like how life was great for him but something happened in regards to Redd and he lost everything he had. Redd is the real greedy jerk, overcharging for art and shit. He only gives you the whole "cousin" discount to get it cheaper which is the games way of making it easier to get art. Elsewise you could be paying more than 10k bells for fake art to be shipped and for him to be gone.
