You're right, the US isn't the only free country. There are none. You may think that a country is free, because you live within the lines that the country has set for you. If you follow what the government says for you to say, think, do, and believe, then you have all the rights you could ever want, but if you step out of line, you will quickly realize how few rights you actually have.

a lot of the things i've been noticing about america recently, as an european, is the amount of things done in america right now that would be normal in a dictatorship. we have to learn about 3-4 dictatorships (ex: hitler, franco, mussolini) before 10th grade - what lead to them, how they happened, the type of people that would lead it, the military, what happened during and how they fell. america has way too many signs of a country that's heading in that direction. and if you get into one, it's gonna take you decades to end it. you need to do something about that NOW.

@Jesse A. even if you were right (you aren´t) - it does not make what Todd Shaw said wrong. I recall recently reading the comments under a video covering the Christchurch attack in New Zealand and the following ban on assault rifles in NZ. An American user commented that it would be illegal to ban assault rifles in New Zealand, since it was an infringement of New Zealander's "second amendment rights". That pretty much says it all, doesn't it?
Reminds me on John Olivers piece about the NRA, how they see infringements on gun rights anywhere in the world as infringements on gun rights in the USA and hence offer "coaching" to foreign gun rights activists on how to communicate, including the gem that the second ammendment is sacred...
Yeah, I mean, just look at the data. Freedom House index of democracy and political freedom has the United States at a score of 86. That's lower than every single country in western Europe, and just two points above Poland which many people now view as a quasi-dictatorship. Meanwhile, Norway, Sweden, and Finland are at a perfect 100/100 score.
Because Americans are raised and taught that we have more freedom than every other country in the world that we are superior when it comes to freedom and that's why we're also so gung-ho about America everyday starting in elementary school you have to either say the pledge of allegiance or stand up for the national anthem and if you don't you're shamed by your teacher and your classmates it's drilled into our heads that we're the greatest country in the world the envy of everyone that's why American views are so f*cked up
Americans aren't going on about it. Trump supporters are going on about it, and the Republican party backs him, as if we are going to become Socialist or Communist if Democrats lead. It's a talking point for people who don't actually know what those terms mean, or they would know that offering national healthcare is not Socialism. Not trying to insult those people but it is very sad and frustrating to me, because that includes family members who think Trump=Freedom and Biden=Communism. They also have never really traveled outside the U.S. so I think that's part of it, too. All these guns are making us less free as we have to worry if we'll be shot next time we go to a movie!

If this is a "regime" -- i.e. a fascist government, then obviously Mussolini and Franco got it all wrong, didn't they? It's hard to imagine anything less authoritarian in terms of what Trump has actually DONE! The Johnson government in the UK, for example, is FAR more authoritarian.

This discussion has become toxic. I think the American idea of freedom is based on a suspicion that the government may act to oppress the people and a mistrust of the concept of social responsibility. If the government asks the people to wear masks then some believe it is a way of stopping the freedoms they have a right to. In Europe we are more united than this and will accept limitations when we see that it is for the greater good of the country.

What do you mean 'freedom '? Freedom to die if you're poor? Some people have the freedom to carry guns - which means others will be killed. No freedom when you're dead. I think the fascination for the foreign audience consists of three main parts: part horror (that it could happen to the US), part fascination (that it IS happening in the US) and a healthy dose of schadenfreude (that despite all the talk, the rhetoric, the proclamations condemning these very sort of political/social/authoritarian issues abroad now the US itself is experience what it often inflicted on others).
For me there is also part worry. Specifically that the politicians here will use their actions/rhetoric/etc as a template/playbook. (Which is already happening)
The schadenfreude is accurate. I can't help but laugh in both amusement and horror how America is behaving like one of the "shithole" countries Trump so happily spat on. The "freedom" they won't shut up about that is laughably constrained by their low income, expensive healthcare, expensive education and how violent/intimidating their neighbour with the open carry license and military arsenal is.
I remember sometimes watching the French News about the subject of translation for Trump, they would need to have meeting because they had to give the ideas of what he was saying while keeping up with his way of talking, while still being as clear as possible. The worst in all that is how looking closely at his words showed how little he said or how void of sense it sometimes was.
My favourite is this one; translated in Dutch: "ik heb op een elite [Ivy League] universiteit gestudeerd. Ik ben zeer hoog opgeleid. Ik ken woorden. Ik ken de beste woorden." Which is probably the stupidest thing you can actually say for someone with a degree of any kind.
In Swede, the national radio has an US-podd and they are more trying to analyse his actions. But when Trump said that the nationalist militia to stand down and wait during the election everyone grasped for air before that analyse.

It used to be like that, but unfortunately, we all became very dependent on this melting pot, so it's no longer a fun game to watch because the outcome actually matters to us.
Its a good analogy really. It seems like the loudest most extreme voices get all the attention in the US, even on mainstream news, radical viewpoints are accepted as normal and not challenged. I think Trump is dangerous to American citizens and democracy, but removing him will not fix most of America’s issues.
I’m not even against him for policy reasons. I’m against him because he’s just a moron. At the bare minimum regardless of politics the president should at least have above average intelligence. @Liver Success Well, decisions made by some of those in power in the US tend to cause problems for the rest of the world, so I would understand it if a lot of people in "most of the world" would be interested in what's going on.
This just finally makes clear how successful the original "public relations industry" has been since World War I - later called the "propaganda industry." It's stunning how Americans still think of themselves as being "exceptional" and better off than anyone else on the planet. You can thank the corporate media for that, advertising, the insurance industry, and of course politicians (bought off by the corporations, sponsors, and the insurance companies). Translated: It's all about money here. Not so in other countries.
I'm still astonished at how thoroughly indoctrinated most Americans are over how their taxes should be used. In other forms of democracy we expect our taxes to be used primarily to improve everyone's standard of living. Taxes are for things like schools, and essential services and health-care, where access should be equal and profiteering improper. But only in America will people think that for their taxes to be used to provide health-care for everyone would be an outrageous infringement of their liberty. They actually *want* to be sucked dry by insurance companies and what America calls the 'health industry' and still pay such high taxes. They are economic slaves to the corporations but seem to think it's all right and proper.
One cannot underestimate the impact of Walter Lippmann's book PUBLIC OPINION in 1922. It basically suggested the public is too stupid to govern themselves and they should be tricked into doing what the government wants through propaganda and media control. The US political arena has adopted that position with enthusiasm.
American exceptionalism is baked into school curriculum. It's not just the public relations industry. Americans don't learn world history, they learn U.S. history where they are always the victor.
I feel like Americans have a very poor understanding of the impact that their imperialist policies have in the world and also of how they're seen by other countries. Their belief of having the best democracy in the world is absolutely baffling to me. Your electoral system is a dumpster fire. I live in a country with a much younger and fragile democracy and still feel like there's more participation and legitimacy in the voting system here than in the U.S.

I am 69 years old and have lived next door to the US, in Toronto, my whole life. Unfortunately, the current dysfunction, hyper-partisanship, racism and unwillingness to listen to the other side has always been present. What is the difference between Canadians and Americans? By and large, Canadians believe in a shared destiny and wish to be a part of a society. Americans, at least too many of them, and Trump is the poster boy for this, are all about themselves. The clearest illustration of this is the health care systems in our two countries. Canadians look out for each other. The monied and powerful in the US don't give a F**k about the other guy.

I will also say that it's impossible to watch Trump talk 20 years ago vs nowadays and not conclude he suffers severe dementia. The fact that millions of Americans don't see that says very bad things about your education and culture and the mental state of the general population.
Oddly, he's come across as slightly more coherent since his covid treatment. Granted, he still sounds like a loon but capable of speaking in mostly full sentences.
As a Brit I found this piece absolutely fascinating. Despite what Americans might think about us Europeans, we both care about you and need you., and that is why we are so disgusted by Trump and his endless cycle of fatal incompetence and lies. The US reputation has fallen off a cliff since 2016, and I genuinely fear a Trump re-election would irreparably damage some of the foundations that gave the US such strength in the first place. Shouldn't the leader of a country care about their country first? Isn't that every leader of every country in the entire world? I think social media and the media in general has distorted everything. Barely anything bad under Obama got covered here. And nothing good under trump gets covered. Is he perfect? No. But people attribute so many lies, twisted words, and opinions as fact. That's what scares me. Free speech in America is slowly being destroyed. And that needs to stop. That's the one thing we can hold over a lot of countries in the world.

You're right, the US isn't the only free country. There are none. You may think that a country is free, because you live within the lines that the country has set for you.

That last last parenthasis sentence is poorly written.
The schadenfreude is accurate. I can't help but laugh in both amusement and horror how America is behaving like one of the "shithole" countries Trump so happily spat on. Same in other countries, just less money.
The US political arena has adopted that position with enthusiasm.
@@dianeodify BINGO. I so agree.
American exceptionalism is baked into school curriculum. It's not just the public relations industry. Americans don't learn world history, they learn U.S. history where they are always the victor.
It is truly like watching a horror show, you want to look away but you just can’t! So happy I live in New Zealand.
Please take me out of this shitshow 😂😂😂
Yes, be thankful you don't live here! Your prime minister isn't a divisive complete wack job, I'd be thankful for that

@@TheVeregat have you really traveled abroad?
@@Renanaguilar yes why
I feel like Americans have a very poor understanding of the impact that their imperialist policies have in the world and also of how they're seen by other countries. Their belief of having the best democracy in the world is absolutely baffling to me. Your electoral system is a dumpster fire. I live in a country with a much younger and fragile democracy and still feel like there's more participation and legitimacy in the voting system here than in the U.S.
true.
Absolutely agree with all of these foreign correspondents. You’ve hit it spot on.
Signed,
An American living in Florida who would dearly love to leave this country.
I love how Europe is a continent full of different cultures, speaking different languages, and they still cooperate and understand each other better than American states do...
Please, read history. We killed each other pretty much on every occasion possible, until WW2. That was the straw that broke the camels back. Since then its peaceful. Mostly. In 94 there was a genocide still, in the former Yugoslavia. We are dancing on a razors edge, but we seem to learned the lesson.
I am loving the sass of the Danish reporter 😂 Also the Dutch does not mince his words!! Too bad the people who really need to hear it, will not

I've got Al Gore on the phone.
should have said constitutional republic socrates did not like democracy nor did the founding fathers

Hi, this is a friendly reminder to all US citizens over the age of 18: please vote, you have the opportunity to make change in our country which is currently declining in all aspects to say the least
Not only to make change in your country, but in the whole world. Unfortunately, climate change is very much impacted by the actions of the US and we're running out of time to prevent catastropy very quickly. So we're kinda counting on you guys to elect Biden.
An oppertunity which is lesser thanks to the electoral collage, jerrymandering and phillybusters.
I voted!
My sure to get out and vote Trump! We are counting on you gen z
Dear rest of the world,
Keep watching because we’re getting dumber and poorer. The BEST is yet to COME!
Watching closely! I hope the sensible ones pull through though, and remain safe. 🍿🥑
It's hard to watch, because the US takes the world with them down. Think of the Iran Deal. Think of leaving Northern Syria when the Turkish attacked the Kurds and those had to leave which set Isis free again. Think of the fact that Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria are the result of American politics.
@@kokosnuss2387 gee, that’s kind of a lot of pressure for one country (out of almost 190).

This shows how clearly America has become a parody of itself
2:11 "Foreigners think they know the US and Americans and they really don't...I've reached the conclusion that we don't understand them and they don't understand us." Very true.
"the world is laughing at us, folks!"
They weren't before now they are because of him how ironic
Believe me, we aren't laughing anymore. The laughs we had on the first day of Trumps dictatorship have made room for fear you will destroy the world, and take us with you. Please get your act together. GO VOTE!
We are actually crying for you.
Not any more. At first, 45 was a joke - and I remember Reagan and G.W. Bush. I wondered how and why, in a country the size of America, this was the best you could come up with as a President. Now, I pity America, and fear for you and the rest of the world if he isn't stopped.,

I literally watch so I can escape the nonsense of my own country. America is at the brink of falling. She cannot survive another four years.
If America didn't have guns, had an NHS (but even better), had free university education and free childcare, if it admitted it's past and finally embraced the future; America would truly be exceptional.
But, carry on. This reality TV show is endlessly entertaining.
You have to join the military if you want "free" education. They're not going to give up that recruiting tool any time soon.
@@alexpkeaton4471 we have that too. People still went into the armed forces. It's another excuse to keep the poor where they are. Because THEY know trickle down theory is a lie. No. You would not be exceptional. You would keep up with the rest of the civilized countries. Exceptionalism is not worth shitcrap if you’re only aspiring to keep up.
@@alexpkeaton4471,most people who join the military don't get that "free education". After living in "the global south" for an extended period of time during this presidency as an American, I remember how I was told to avoid any large crowds and gatherings/protests, as things could get bad fast. Being back here during this presidency it was troubling to see and feel the parallels in a country that is supposedly advanced. I tell my friends this isn't a joke and they don't get it because they haven't lived it
yeah. i am sorry. it is sad to watch.
Well put, Phillip
I, too, am holding my breath.
I feel like I’m living on a time bomb. But how do you escape America when your in crippling debit.
Run to Turkey where the debt collectors can't follow.
Yea... wit student loans.

Agreed. I wanted to leave the country when Trump got elected because I knew it was going to be bad. Unfortunately there just wasn't any way for me and my husband to afford moving our family out of the country. Like all the people that say "Well if you don't like it here leave." Trust me... I want to and would if I could. You paying? I honestly love America, but it is not the country I thought it was. There's so much hate here and ugliness here.
The way you do it is by applying for jobs abroad. Plenty of opportunities in Britain, EU, Middle East and Asia. Being native English speakers is a big advantage... It's up to you to be creative and use it!

Excellent video. I am just sickened by what is happening in the USA. Too many of my fellow Americans either cannot read the signs of authoritarianism or they are embracing it. Maintaining a democratic republic is dependent upon an educated and moral citizenry. I hope we pull through this.
As a non-American, I am shocked how close Americans are to actual change in terms of health Care and third party resurgence, yet how they don't believe it could happen.
No one's going to do anything about health care in the US. The democrap party gave us their version called Slowbama Care and all it turned out to be was a pact with the the US Physicians Union and the Insurance Companies and their whores in Congress.
