While watching Shutter Island, I felt like the doctors were conspiring and manipulating the situation to try to turn Leo D into a patient. I was surprised by the real ending. The bad guys turned out to be the good guys. It's one of those movies that, once you know the ending, you have to watch it a second time to get the whole picture (like The Sixth Sense).
No, they successfully tricked the audience into believing he was crazy. Leo was not a patient. He was a Marshall. There are plenty of clues showing you what was going on. They used mind control to make him believe he ad went crazy. But they were ex nazi's getting back at him for what he did to that officer during the war. His wife was warning him the entire time to leave the island. Even towards the end, the Dr told him that if he had just looked at the I fo his partner discovered he would have been on the boat and safe. That place was government ops and they were doing MK Ultta experiments to people. They would either make you a patient, or convince you to be a part of their operations. At the end, Leo knew that he wasnt a patient. Even Mark Ruffalo was bugged out like, I have to pretend or they will lock me up. The patient that told him to run used to work there, but she got too close. They even put Mark and Leo in prison grabs so they wouldnt look like Marshall's when the meeting happened with the administrative people who visited the island. They did everything to make leo look crazy. Even the crazy crazy patient who was taking rocks was signaling to Leo. Slowly they convinced the viewers that Leo was crazy. He wasnt. That's the plot. They tricked people into believing they were crazy. Bot the people themselves, but everyone around them. Then they could keep them locked up. The lobotomized Leo so he would never escape. They knew he would.
I’ve always felt that Bringing Out the Dead (1999) was a solid precursor to Shutter Island, showcasing what Scorsese could do with horror and/or horror adjacent projects.
I love Shutter Island. Paramount also chose to put Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones for award contention. The failure of that film ensured it didn't get the nominations they hoped for. I think this is a fascinating exploration of trauma. It is commonly negatively compared to Inception, but I frankly, think its far superior. I think Scorsese's focus on the psychological damage this character has suffered gives it more depth. I only saw Inception once. Like some of other Nolan's films, I remember the visual gimmicks, but I don't remember the characters. I think he is fairly weak on character & relies on gimmicks & twists to impress people. I thought the ending was a rip off of Blade Runner as well. I don't think Nolan is as clever as he or his fanboys say he is. I also love the mood & atmosphere of Shutter Island. Its one of my favourite films from Scorsese, & I think its one of DiCaprio's best performances. Ted Levine also is worth a mention. I find his performance unsettling.
The movie gives away the twist in the first five minutes. Then it engages in so much misdirection that you forget. Then it ends, and you're sitting there like "Oh, so it really was that all along? What a shame." I'm not going to lie, it's a very good movie, but I watched it before reading the book and Lehane does NOT telegraph it like that (coming from someone who already knew the ending).
This is one of those movies where the first watch is amazing and subsequent watches aren't watered down by knowing the twist. You're too busy looking for the subtle hints you missed before.
so annoying when people call a movie disappointing because the ending is predictable. Yes predictability can have an overall affect on a movie but in no way is the most important factor in its quality. Movies have a formula, and as long as the ride is fun, who cares about the ending being predictable? We know in every Batman media, hes going to win, so do you really care about the ending or is it the ride?
This is such a beautiful movie. I freakin love it. One of my favorite horror movies. I love the mix of genres. It’s so unsettling. Watch this on a rainy day and tell me you aren’t freaked out.
The title of this series is really annoying. "WTF happened" kinda implies that something went wrong so you click on it thinking did they have production problems? Problems on set? And the answer is absolutely nothing of note happened to Shutter Island, Scorsese just made a good film that made loads of money... pointless video.
@ that last part was more of a joke. But I personally would stand by that it is a horror movie (I’d say the same about Seven, Silence of the lambs, and even Cape Fear). My opinion is my opinion. If someone has a counter argument for why it isn’t then be my guest
@@Anytyme06 the images Leo sees, the creepy atmosphere, the twist, and all the generally scary stuff going on with Leo and the island itself. Yeah it could be classified more as a thriller but I’m weird and I also classify Seven (from David fincher) as a horror movie
This movie had very dissapointing ending. I'd prefer if it turned out that inmates took over the hospital and pretended to be doctors and lobotomise or drugged doctors and put them in cells. This movie isn't even scary. Kind of boring actually.

@@DigitalPockets_ - How do you explain the end when he shot his weapon, all the blood splattered behind the doctor, then it was gone.
Scramble the letters in "shutter island" and you can spell "truth and lies", 😊
80s Memories. Bring it back

Great movie that is often overlooked. I haven't seen that one in a while.
Goodfellas, Cape Fear, Casino And The Departed are My Four All-time Favorite Scorsese Movies.
Mine too 👍
Damn Straight
Valid list
Mine would be Goodfellas, The Departed, Silence and Casino
Leo was actually sane in the movie

Severely underrated film!
Shutter Island was over-shadowed by Inception in 2010.
Nolan's gimmicks excited everyone. He is not as clever as he or his fanboys claim he is.
@@filmbuff2777tenet could’ve been better but yeah he’s a tad bit overrated. Inception is Nolan’s masterpiece tho

Exactly. Dissapointing and predictable ending.
Nothing happened to Shutter Island. It's still there, on some streaming service or the other, in DVD, and in people's memories.
I still have my dvd copy
Hollywood needs old-school titans like Scorsese
More than ever
Those days are over, at least for now.

Leonardo's best performance...
Calling "Shutter Island" a horror flick is a bit of a stretch. A thriller seems more appropriate.
Night Watch! Crazy movie!
5:55 glitch in the video?
Cape Fear is Scorsese’s best film. Fight me.
Goodfellas or raging bull.

Is there a what's same and different from the book video??

I love this movie but I think the twist was one of the most obvious I've seen. I saw this in the theater and it seemed most were expecting it.
I wouldn’t consider Shutter Island a top 5 for Scorsese but it is definitely slept on
all Leo movies happen inside inception, best head canon
Love seeing this movie. First time i was like ohhh then hearing it broken down by experts and i was like wth
Unpopular option....
I am NOT the biggest fan of Leo's work, BUT
this film is PERFECTION 👌
Great cinematography, loved the clever bookends, but the plot/twist was lazily telegraphed and as a result, rather dull imo.
One of the best horror movies of the past 20 years (don’t debate if it’s horror or not, it is)
if you can't take a debate, then your opinion means nothing!

Shutter Island is way better than Wolf of Wall Street

a boring movie about a boring book. and ruffalo is the worst.
