I have landed at Kai Tak Airport on two occasions: August 1981 and July 1990. Both flights were from London Heathrow flying on a Boing 747. The July 1990 landing was at night. Both were amazing experiences.

I flew on Cathay from Gatwick on a 747-300, Same as the one in this clip. I was invited up to the flight deck. I was a Kiwi, And so was one of the Pilots. The other was a Pom. I stayed up there ,from flying over the Border into China, And then landing at Kai -Tak. 4 or 5 days before. A Lufthansa Freight had aqua planed into the harbour. Nose in. Tail out. Right on the end. That was 1983.

I have had the privilege of flying in and out of Kai Tak Airport 3 times. Once in 1994, and 2 times 1995.
One of the most difficult airports in the world to land at. Select few pilots from most airlines were the only ones allowed to fly in and out.
I used to like being up on the Peak watching these birds flying in.
I felt sorry for those that lived directly (literally) under the flight path just after the red checkered board. How the residents ever got any sleep always amazed me.

Bringing back great memories, went to the roof-deck of the shopping mall where you could see the faces of the pilots in front of you before the plane took a steep turn right. I also remember looking at my right in the BA 747 and seeing a men reading the newspaper at his kitchendesk..... That was september 1996.

Landing at Kai Tak was an adventure by itself every single time before exploring HK. My fist time was in 1984 on way to work in China. Later I was posted to HK and could watch the activity on Kai Tak from my office window. The scariest landing was the last flight coming in from Taipei on CX during a Taifun with two go-a-rounds before finally setting down.

landing in kai tak was like the most controlled and most exercised way of crashing a plane - without crashing
literally head for the mountain while you do steep turns right over a city ..
sounds crazy - these pilots did it on a daily base .

Actually, Lufthansa (at approx 4:10 of this video) landed a little short: his wheels touched down at about 1050 ft (320m). That's just within the touchdown zone - which is categorised as between 1000 ft and 2000 ft down the runway - but only just.
Cathay Pacific required its pilots to touchdown at exactly 1500 ft. If you touched down at 1400 ft or 1600 ft on a line check, you were marked down and the inaccuracy was noted in the Check Captain's report.
After the line check, you were then debriefed on the ground for about 45 minutes on the shortcomings and inaccuracies of your landing technique.
You passed your line check, but you did not receive a glowing report.

Very cool video. I had the pleasure of going through Kai Tak a could a couple of times before it closed. Was an amazing experience each time and feel lucky I got to experience it before the move to Chep Lap.
BTW, don't need the music on the video. It's great as it is without it.

What a fantastic video, thanks for sharing! I like the rock'n'roll parts, and surely had a laugh with these smileys judging the landings LOL the Air India 747-300 was very cool, lots of rudder action during the takeoff. The Oman B747SP was also a big highlight!!!
