1. The symbolism of the Painted Ladies Beyond their architectural beauty, the Painted Ladies hold a unique symbolism. These grand homes are symbolic of the famous California Gold Rush era. As newfound wealth flooded into the city, builders sought to display their prosperity through elaborate residences.
2. Lombard Street is known for the one-way block on Russian Hill between Hyde and Leavenworth Streets, where eight sharp turns are said to make it the most crooked street in the world.
3. Coit Tower, which stands atop Telegraph Hill in San Francisco's Pioneer Park, offers panoramic views of San Francisco that take in "crooked" Lombard Street, Nob Hill, Russian Hill, Twin Peaks, Aquatic Park, Pier 39, the Financial District and the Ferry Building, as well as San Francisco Bay itself including Angel Island ...
4. In 1981, Ghirardelli Square was bought by a partnership of Capital & Counties USA and Northwestern Mutual Life. In order to preserve Ghirardelli Square for future generations, the Pioneer Woolen Mills and D. Ghirardelli Company was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
5. The Palace of Fine Arts has been a set piece for several films, from 1958's The View to 2004's Twisted. It has also been said that the Palace was George Lucas's inspiration for the design of Queen Amidala's royal residence in Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
6. Downtown San Francisco is bordered by SoMa-the city's tech hub-Chinatown (the largest Chinese enclave outside of Asia), and the Union Square shopping district. The downtown area is also referred to as FiDi, short for the financial district, since many offices are clustered in the neighborhood.
7. Golden Gate Bridge as one of the world's most beautiful bridges, there are many different elements to the Golden Gate Bridge that make it unique. With its tremendous towers, sweeping cables, and great span, the Bridge is a sensory beauty and engineering wonder featuring color, sound and light.
