I figured this out ages ago. As the owner of multiple machines there are a couple that will take anything you put in them. Then the others require particular threads. So I keep a supply of three different threads. Aurifil for quilting machine (Janome), Sulky for the multi-needle embroidery machine (Brother), Coats and Clark for the older basic machine (1950s Kenmore), and Gutterman for the sergers (Singers). It took much trial and error to figure out what each machine preferred. Having grown up using my Mother's old Kenmore I was taught to use the best thread for the fabric you were sewing. It will take anything, so I had to relearn with the newer machines.
I had an art teacher who told me to "use the best tools you can afford at the time..." and that serves me in many areas. I also had my Bernina guy tell me to use the same thread in the bobbin that I used up top. It would be awesome if Aurifil picked you up. I was a radioman (which is extinct now) in the Navy. Thank you for your great videos. Be well.

uh oh... "It's only thread, it's only fabric" is out the window haha. I used to LOVE! to sew with dual duty (Coates and Clarke) but times have changed and so has thread. It might not be brand that your Bernina is picky about but QUALITY! As all brands are trying to save $ for bigger profits so too is thread company. I used to enjoy Guiterman thread. No longer like it so much for the same reasons. Quality.
I love Aurifil but I use vintage machines that aren't so picky. I'm going to give a shout out to Connecting Threads Essentials. Its wonderful quality and thicker than Aurifil, so you have to be careful to use a scant 1/4 inch seam allowance. I love to piece & quilt with it. I only use Aurofil for fabric from Free Spirit, and any like theirs, because it is thinner. Thanks for being humble & sharing your experiences!
I grew up using coates & clark as the the gold standard. I have since learned that is no longer true. I have switched over to AURIFIL 50wt. It simply does a better job and looks great in my quilts.
I learned about the importance of thread from taking classes at the quilt shop. Over the years I notice that Auriful thread was all they used on their machines. Granted the machines were all Berninas, there were no hicupps while we sewed. I converted to Auriful and have been a happy camper ever since.😀
I agree that Aurifil is an excellent cotton thread. But Superior threads are also excellent, both their Egyptian cotton and their polyester. Both are very low lint like Aurifil. I’ve also had equally excellent results with Connecting Threads 100% 3-ply long staple cotton thread for quilting, and it’s the most affordable of them all. It sews well in my 2006 Bernina Artista 200E/730E, Juki TL Mini QVP, Babylock Ellisimo, and Pfaff Creative Performance. It has a bit of a sheen to it and is very low lint. For the money, it’s now my thread of choice, and I encourage you to give it a try. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. 😊
First timer watching and a vet too; appreciate you! Two suggestions if I may. 1) Use a quality mic closer pinned on your shirt and 2) put the name of the product you are talking about on the screen. I didn’t understand the thread name until reading the comments (always used whatever thread handy…until now)! Thank you for the heads up ☺️
I have a 20 year old Bernina and I can use any thread on it. I have been sewing since I was a small child over 50 years and no I cannot afford Arofill is way too expensive on a fixed income
My Bernina QE475 from 2022 sews all thread without a hitch. If I have thread breakage, it's usually a tension issue or a dull needle. Bernina Jeff's best advice-- if you have sewing problems, rethread the machine freshly again and that usually fixes the problems.
Keep in mind that some cone thread is for sergers. It isn’t meant for the stress of a seam, it is just to overcast seams so they don’t unravel. Cone thread is fine if it is sewing thread. Aurifil comes on large cones.
Brother, I've been sewing for years and it comes down to this, you spend good money on your tools and fabric, you can buy cheap thread, but you'll spend more in frustration. Buy good shit it's worth it and give the finger to prewound bobbins. I drive consew, baby lock, brother, and old singers. Even have a Pfaff and a morse. All sew right with the right supplies. Welcome to the needle arts. #veteranssew
You are so right. Thread makes all the difference, I use superior thread, but I also like aurofil. It looks like you were holding a spool of maxi lock, which is for sergers, and not made as strong as other threads. It’s for finishing off seams, so it doesn’t have to be as good. Enjoy your new find!
Agreed! I bought my Brother machine in 2013. In 2020 I had it professionally cleaned for the first time. The guy called me back and said he simply tightened and realigned the machine for me as it was not dirty. He said he barely oiled it. He was incredibly curious as the the ticket said I exclusively sewed flannel on this machine and they were expecting massive lint masses. In all honesty, so was I. I had only removed a very tiny piece of lint here or there over the years. So he was curious and started asking me so many questions. Turns out, I had only ever used Gutterman thread in it from day one. They had the best color matches to the material I was sewing. I didn't think too much of it. I mean I had tried other things now and then but they broke like crazy and I donated them because I knew what worked. I agree that good thread works and your machine will thank you for it! I have a Bernina and a Brother. I use Gutterman thread still. I have considered the Aurafil for my top stitching and embroidery. It comes in such amazing quantities and provides the color variety. Sage advice Marine. ❤🙂💛
Good morning. I learned the same lesson. My Brother was forgiving and would eat anything. I went to a Bernina B880 and found out fast that it was not like my Brother. Aurifil and Gutterman thread is what my B880 ( Diva) likes. I also have a Singer Featherweight. I only use Aurifil because it is practically lint free. Have a blessed day. 😊
I bought Sewology thread from Hobby Lobby. HUGE mistake. It was so linty I had to clean my bobbin area with every bobbin change. Aurifil is typically my go to but I was making dog crate quilts and didn't want to use the good stuff. Another plus with Aurifil is your seams lay flatter.
My Brother likes all different threads except for Aurifil. My thread will break constantly if I put that in my machine. But my other machine is fine with it. Thanks for sharing your experience.
This is soooo helpful as i am currently finishing my first ever quilt and working on my second one! I love to learn and thanks for sharing! You rock!!! Cheers from Minnesota.
I have a Brother PQ, 1500 SL machine as well. I have sewn with Coats and Clark, Missouri Star, Gutterman, and Aurifil thread. By far, the Aurifil leaves the least amount of lint and gives me the best quality of piecing. Once I discovered this, I always use it. I love Aurifil thread!
Oh my yes, there's a huge difference in threads. I took a 4 year course from Superior Threads several years ago. I learned a lot in that course. I use Aurifil now for piecing but Superior Thread is a wonderful thread too. It's good that you found Aurifil. Your machine will thank you too!!
I also use Aurafil for quilting. It is cotton and most fabric for quilting is cotton. Ialso bought some King Tut but haven't used it yet, that is what Donna Jordan uses on her longarm machine. Glad you are making the new quilters aware of the difference in threads.
You are still right! To begin and get your feet wet, just use what you can afford. We should never put obstacles in front of what will make us happy like expensive thread, fabric or machines. With time and God, you will get better stuff. I gratefully follow your videos. We all belong to a great community of givers.
Nice advice 👍. I’m glad you found a thread your machines like! My Pfaffs like everything but Aurifil! It seems to be linty on them. Also Superior, Mettler and Gutterman work well on my Bernina. Keep on quilting ❤.
I tried Aurifil thread, and my Topaz 25 doesn't like it. It Sews the best with Gutterman thread. The smaller machine will work with anything. I've also discovered that the Coats thread isn't as good as it used to be either, it seems to be thinner and breaks more.
Nevervused Aurifil. But I shall give it a try. Based on this new info. Thank you. Hey man YOU DESERVE THE BEST. Any man who has been a marine i have DEEP RESPECT FOR...❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Great message, thank you! My Juki doesn't like Aurifil, at least not the 1422 length spools, so I've always used Missouri Star 50wt cotton thread and love it! Practically no lint.
Love aurifil because it is only 2ply and helps with my scant 1/4 inch. That’s all I use for intricate piecing. Welcome to the club. It’s well worth the price.
When i got my viking saphire i had some thread from joannes. It did not like it. Got some missouri star thread. It liked it. I could feel the difference between the twp..the thread from joannes was so rough.
My Bernette isn't too picky about the brand of thread, but it hates old thread. I inherited many beautiful spools from my grandmother who sewed until late in her life. All those beautiful threads made the ugliest knotted wads of broken strands. After cleaning the mess out of my machine a couple of times, I tossed them all in the trash. Granny wouldn't have approved.
So do I. I have a bunch of threads from rayon (when I thought I liked machine embroidery) great for top stitching/quiliting, Gutterman polyester, mercerized thread, and cotton, some as much as 40 yrs old. More important is how thread is stored, not exposed to dust, pet hair, and light. Test threads by grabbing a piece in both hands and yank it apart. If it breaks quickly and cleanly it's good. If kind of stretchy and breaks unevenely, toss it or use for hand basting. All my threads work great in my Bernina QE475 of 2022. I think dust bunnies in your machine are more from the fabric than thread. I prewash (not launder) fabric in cold water with no soap/detergent plus color catcher, and dry it delicate cycle. Then starch it until it's stiff before cutting so any shrinking will take place. That is how you have less fraying and lint in your machine. Also, the right needle and change it often to prevent lint. Why do long armers prefer polyester thread?
My Bernina is so picky about the threads that I sew with (that I don't like to sew on my Bernina anymore). I have been thinking of trading my Bernina in on a different brand of sewing machine.
Love the Aurifil 50wt for piecing and when you get into free motion quilting Mark try the Superior thread so fine 50wt also but in a polyester. not as much breakage and it does awesome on piecing too! See you soon!
I was an Aurifil user exclusively. I needed a less expensive but same quality option. I discovered Scanfil Organic Cotton thread at Intl Quilt Festival. I love it.
If you are open to suggestions, may I suggest you try Glide thread. I use Aurifil also. I like both. Also, no matter how old we get there’s always something to learn. I enjoy your channel and your enthusiasm.
50 with is used for anything other than quilting. With aurifil you can also make your stitch length at least one more setting larger. For example if you sew at a 2.5 length you can go to 3. The thread won't pucker and will allow removal if necessary more easily. 40 wgt thread is used for quilting, stitch in the ditch etc. Remember to increase your stitch length so it won't pull
I have an Aurifil 3 multi color box. I haven’t used it in my machine yet. I’m machine piecing a quilt now and using C&C Dual Duty. I don’t want to change horses in the middle of the stream. Next project I will try it in my machine but I have a Brother so I may just use rope!!🤣🤣🤣 I do know that I HATE AURIFIL FOR HAND SEWING!! Maybe I hand stitch with too much tension but it breaks every time!! But I do have a tendency to bend needles between my thumb and fingers?🤦🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️ Stressed stitcher?😣🤯😬 Great video and I will try it in my machine next go round. Thank you!💙🪡🧵
I love m’y Aurifil also. I can suggest Superior thread and King Tut. I prefer 50 weight for piecing and will have some 40 weight when I quilt the sandwich so it shows more. I try to find sales on these threads which is rare. I’d be curious to see you sew with rope, if anyone can do it, it’d be you. 👍
Siiiiigh... I have two Juki machines. The 98Q inly like King Tut. The 2010Q only likes Signature. I will try the Aurifil on both, I need ONE thread not a different type for all of them. Love your vidoes
Every quilter will probably give you a different machine/brand to try because we become loyal to what we have. I suggest you figure out what features you want on the machine and then look at different brands to see what you can afford. I enjoy having a built in needle threader and thread cutter. Lighting is also important, some machines have more than others. I sew and embroider on a Babylock and a Pfaff. The Pfaff is more technical but I love the stitch and the dual feed. The Babylock is more user friendly for embroidery but doesn’t have dual feed. Good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of quilting.
Another reason NOT to buy into the "B" word hype...50+ years of sewing experience and you couldn't give me one...on the other hand Aurafil is fabulous!
I have several machines and one machine I tried a dozen threads in and it was like…I cannot work in these conditions…and I was upset because it was my dream machine-and then someone said to try King Tut from superior threads…and honestly…it was night and day. My other machines take anything but this machine is picky
"I knew what it was . . . it was my refusal to learn" These are wise words.
I figured this out ages ago. As the owner of multiple machines there are a couple that will take anything you put in them. Then the others require particular threads. My machine love’s Aurifil thread. That’s about all I use now after fighting with all the other thread. Who would have thought!!
My machine is a Pfaff & it’s a workhorse. It’s also quite high end. I use Gutermann & Coats & Clark threads 🧵
Aurifil is my favorite!!

So very true. Even worse when you’re using a longarm, they are very picky about what thread they will work with.
Aurifil was introduced to me when I began quilting.
I really like Wonderfil out of Canada…. Not an Aurifil fan.
You’re lucky. My Stellaire 2 hates aurafill. It always keeps coming unthreaded. On my Solaris it breaks.
I also use Aurafil for quilting. It is cotton and most fabric for quilting is cotton. Ialso bought some King Tut but haven't used it yet, that is what Donna Jordan uses on her longarm machine. Glad you are making the new quilters aware of the difference in threads.

My babylock ellisimo gold 2 when using the embroidery module it doesn't like certain threads .I, too, thought it was my machine.
Nice advice 👍. I’m glad you found a thread your machines like! My Pfaffs like everything but Aurifil! It seems to be linty on them. Also Superior, Mettler and Gutterman work well on my Bernina. Keep on quilting ❤.
I don't quilt, but I love mettler.
At Intl Quilt Festival, I discovered Scanfil thread. IT’s less expensive than Aurifil and my Pffaff loves it.
I tried Aurifil thread, and my Topaz 25 doesn't like it. It Sews the best with Gutterman thread. The smaller machine will work with anything. I've also discovered that the Coats thread isn't as good as it used to be either, it seems to be thinner and breaks more.

Once a Marine always a Marine. There is no used to be. I made that mistake once, and was married to a Marine who was a Vietnam veteran.
Have used Aurifil thread since the day I started piecing and its great.
Great message, thank you! My Juki doesn't like Aurifil, at least not the 1422 length spools, so I've always used Missouri Star 50wt cotton thread and love it! Practically no lint.
Awesome, good to know, thank you.
I’ve been using Missouri Star thread for years and have never had a problem. I love your videos!❤️
I do agree about the Brother PQ1500SL - I think it would take rope - it is just the best machine.
I use any thread in my bernina it us an old one 35years old 😅 and it is fantastic.
So do I. I have a bunch of threads from rayon (when I thought I liked machine embroidery) great for top stitching/quiliting, Gutterman polyester, mercerized thread, and cotton, some as much as 40 yrs old.
Aurifil is my 100% ,go to thread, has more on it, less lint, just the best piecing thread out there. ❤❤❤
I love it.
Aurifil works the best for my machine, both piecing and fmq. I have a Babylock Jazz II.
If you are open to suggestions, may I suggest you try Glide thread. I use Aurifil also. I like both. Also, no matter how old we get there’s always something to learn. I enjoy your channel and your enthusiasm.
I enjoy watching your videos! We’ll done 🎉🎉🎉🎉 You’re awesome 😎
Aurifil 50 is this the one you are describing? What does the 50 mean compared to other threads. Thank You and have an awesome day
50 with is used for anything other than quilting.
Thanks for including the brand name.
Try Superior threads. They're my faves. I use them for both piecing and longarm.
Aurifil is my go to thread... I love it...
It took me a long time to figure that out and a lot of money wasted on junk thread.
Aurifil or Superior you can't go wrong.
I started using Aurifil about a year ago and it is one of the best threads out there, I agree.
I’ve been thinking of trying better threads…because the spools I get at JoAnn leave tons of lint and dust bunnies!
Great video. I love Aurofil for quilting, it was a game changer!
I use Aurofil on all of my machines. Low lint and works like a charm.
Love Aurifil 50 wt, use it EXCLUSIVELY in my Pfaff Creative Icon!
Thank for that information ill try and find that hete in idaho
I use Aurifil in my HV 95Q for piecing and most quilting too without issues
I had to learn this lesson too.
Siiiiigh... I have two Juki machines. The 98Q inly like King Tut. The 2010Q only likes Signature. I will try the Aurifil on both, I need ONE thread not a different type for all of them. Love your vidoes
Thank you for this advice than having trouble too
Thanks for sharing about 😊 the thread
I had to change thread also. My machine is a Brother. I use Aurafil now. SMH 50weight did the trick. Thanks man! God bless you!
Thank you for this!
I'm a new quilter and I'm looking into buying my first machine. Any suggestions on which one i should buy and which patterns are best for beginners?
Every quilter will probably give you a different machine/brand to try because we become loyal to what we have. I suggest you figure out what features you want on the machine and then look at different brands to see what you can afford. I enjoy having a built in needle threader and thread cutter. Lighting is also important, some machines have more than others. I sew and embroider on a Babylock and a Pfaff. The Pfaff is more technical but I love the stitch and the dual feed. The Babylock is more user friendly for embroidery but doesn’t have dual feed. Good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of quilting.
Tnx a lot!!
I use aurifil and missouri star thread, no problems
Spot on man. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I use aurifil 50 and superior in the bobbin.
I love Aurifil
Another reason NOT to buy into the "B" word hype...50+ years of sewing experience and you couldn't give me one...on the other hand Aurafil is fabulous!
I'm not a quilter, but is that a cotton or polyester thread?
Aurifil is usually cotton. I do believe they do make a blend thread also.
Great to hear. I do like Aurafil. I’m not familiar with some of the other top quality brands. Would love to hear if you find others that work for you.
Love this!!
So do you use use Aurafil for both piecing & quilting?
Professional long armers prefer polyester thread for quilting.
True, true, true!!!
❤
I have old singers will see anything. My newer machines like Aurifil or Superior
I live aurifil!
Come on, Aurafil! Support the Marine!!
I have several machines and one machine I tried a dozen threads in and it was like…I cannot work in these conditions…and I was upset because it was my dream machine-and then someone said to try King Tut from superior threads…and honestly…it was night and day. My other machines take anything but this machine is picky
Um....has anyone tried silk?
