    I have an old hornby Flying Scotsman in LNER green but mine doesn't have a flickering firebox however it does have a cam fitted to the rear wheels on the tender that rubs against a bit of sand paper fixed to a bit of plastic hanging from the bottom of the tender

    I think that you need to give more credit to the age of this great Steam Engine.
    Sounds like the Engine is in dire need of a lube as a minimum.
    The X.04 motor has two felt bearing pads front and back of the armature. A light oil on each pad makes a huge difference.
    This R.850 model was first release in 1968 to 1971.
    Its 56 years old or close to it.
    As old as me, but way older than you I'd suspect.
    At this age it is doing well and after a lube would run even better.
    These motors will run forever if well maintained.
