The difference is that Hurts had the number one o line in the league when he went against that defense. Purdy had the number 20th ranked pass blocking O line. Hurts's pass protection was infinitely better. You give Purdy a playoff level o line and hes gonna break even more records.

@@kevinsills9235 It’s not that the d-line couldn’t hold up. It was that they made two critical mistakes.
3rd & 4 with 1:59 left in Q4, with McDuffie tipping his hand early that he was coming, McKivitz opted to kick out and protect the edge and left the b-gap uncovered for a speed guy, McDuffie, who blocked the pass. If he picks up the blitzing McDuffie, the man McD was covering, Aiyuk, was wide open for the game-winning 1st down.
And, of course, Buford’s blown assignment was just as bad. Purdy had two guys WIDE OPEN (Aiyuk, whose defender fell) & the targeted receiver, Jennings.
Burford owned his mistake after the game, said he blew it.

If the 49ers O line blocks the free rusher at the end of the 4th quarter, we arent talking about this, because Purdy won his first superbowl. Its a team sport and Purdy is truly elite. Mahomes would struggle behind the 49ers o line. His passer rating over the season under pressure was around 60 while Purdy's was 90 and Purdy was pressured far more often.

Well yeah, I mean we've seen what Mahomes looks like with a leaky O line and it ain't pretty. It ain't pretty for anybody, but it especially ain't pretty for a guy who holds the ball looking for the home run completion even running out of the pocket. I like Mahomes but he has only played for excellent teams and coaches and hasn't had to adjust himself much yet and deal with a retooled roster that has to make major tactical adjustments to accommodate its roster. The whole "nobody is Mahomes" thing drives me nuts. He's the best QB of his generation but he's not at the "Nobody Can Touch Me" level yet -- that only has four or five players right now: Brady, Rice, Jim Brown, Lawrence Taylor, and maybe Walter Payton.

The Mr. Irrelevant title is a bit overrated. To be a draft pick in the NFL you have to be 262nd overall of 81,000 college players... Thats the .3 of a percentile of current college athletes.
People forget that. In order to even have your named called you have to be an absolute beast of an athlete, the difference in tools from a 2nd rounder to a 7th is so insignificant that anyone drafted in the later rounds could be better than a second round any given year.

Which is entirely possible. Julian Edelman, Shannon Sharpe, Brock Purdy were/are all better than a long list of second/first rounders.
Statistically though, there is a higher chance of a first/ second rounder being on an NFL roster, but a lot of the times it's because of the Zack Wilson/ Tre Lance scenario where teams have invested millions of dollars on these guys and they keep them around a few years to make sure they're not busts.
Late rounders get kicked to the curb as soon as they fumble in practice.

In his FIRST full season Brock Purdy has almost all the 2023 season #1 QB stats, broke a 49er franchise record (longest passing yardage in a season, passing Joe Montana and Steve Young), broke a NFC record (biggest point-deficit at halftime comeback in NFC Championship game history), broke a NFL record (highest deep pass (>20 yds) Cmpl% in season in recorded NFL history at 63.8% (prev. rec. 55%).
The one stat that I show Purdy-deniers is his #1 CPOE. That's Completion Percentage Over Expectation. Reread those last 2 words. This is an advanced metric that essentially ranks QB's passing accuracy in difficult/challenging situations as compared to all other QB's under the same difficulty/challenge situations. Purdy, in his first full season, beat out ALL other QB's in the league in CPOE. The rbsdm site compares all Quarterbacks in their chart by plotting Passing Efficiency (EPA/P; that's Expected Points Added per Play) vs. CPOE. Brock Purdy is all alone in the top right corner.

And to add to the new passing record. Jeff Garcia had the passing yards record prior to Purdy and although the season has 17 games now he also only needed 16 games to break the record. If he would have taken all 17 games for the record it wouldn't have been the same.

Of these 10 QB's with 4,000+ yards, Purdy also had the fewest completions, the highest (by far) yards per attempt (9.6), and 2nd highest Cmpl% (0.01% below the #1). If you took the highest yardage QB (Tua, with 4,624 yards) and applied the same number of pass attempts (560, compared to Purdy's 444) to Purdy's efficiency (i.e. if Purdy made the same number of pass attempts) then Purdy's extrapolated yardage would've been 5,398 which would be the 3rd highest season passing yardage in NFL history, behind only 2013 Peyton Manning and 2011 Drew Brees (btw, both made with over 650 attempts) and better than any Brady or Mahomes year. Of the highest 25 NFL season passing yardage shown at StatMuse, none of them achieved Purdy's 9.6 yds/att efficiency.

He sat out the last game of the season, letting QB2 Sam Darnold play. If Purdy played 17 games his 4,280 yards would've risen to 4,547.5 yards (if adding his season average 267.5 yards/game). That would've made him #3 in yardage, rather than #5.

It doesn't matter if they can actually read defense quickly, just show them some wow athletics and they praise them nonstop. I swear if Tom Brady or Brees was coming out of college right now, they would disregard him. There is a nuance and indefinable skill to playing QB that can't really be seen. Not seen easily anyway. It’s not the draft position, it’s the reason why he was drafted where he was. He’s undersized with a mediocre arm. That matters. He’s able to compensate for it with his processing ability and anticipation, and that’s great. It makes him a a top 10 qb. But he is physically limited. I will always prefer a qb whose limitations are not physical. Give me Flacco, Stafford, Eli, Roethlisberger, etc; over Purdy, Tua, Rivers, Brees. Brees is a HOFer, but the Saints always struggled outdoors for a reason. And you saw what just happened to Tua in the playoffs and Purdy in wet conditions.
Plenty of guys with big arms don’t work out. But I prefer to take a shot on the guy with the tools. I preferred Stroud and Levis to Bryce Young last year for that reason. My main concern with Caleb Williams, who I otherwise really like, is that I suspect he’s not even 6-1.
Brady won me over after the 2nd Super Bowl. The next year he beat a good Jets team twice (Jets fan here) and it became apparent that he could make throws that Chad Pennington just couldn’t. People don’t remember this now, but Pennington had a much better passer rating than Brady through the first few years of their careers. But Brady really grew into his frame, a frame Purdy does not have, and his arm had gotten noticeably stronger. Despite his draft position, by year 3 or 4, he had all the physical tools you would want out of an elite QB…and he could even move a little by 2004 standards.
To say people doubt Purdy because of his draft position is to oversimplify it and to look at it from the wrong angle. People will continue to have questions because of the same underlying issue that led to his being drafted where he was. Physical limitations that you don’t get with say…Josh Allen, Justin Herbert, Jordan Love, etc

Its all fun until they bust a shoulder because the couldn't read a defense. Nah man, I'd take Purdy over any of those. He actually knows how to play the position already. I'd take a chance he could improve physically, Purdy is actually very quick feet, one of quickest 10 yard splits in the nfl and this next season mentally hell recognize passing & protection reads now. Come on you guys, do better. Purdy was AMAZING in the SB. At this point -- 3 days after the game -- there's plenty of video out there to assist in better understanding his performance.
JT O'Sullivan was saying REPEATEDLY breaking down Purdy's performance that there was NOWHERE to throw the ball. For most of the game, Niners' wrs had difficulty shaking McDuffie & Sneed. They were blanketed. During Mahomes' breakdown, O'Sullivan pointed out that Mahomes was throwing to open receivers, but Purdy was not.
Purdy made one GLARING mistake and it cost them the game.
With 1:59 left in Q4, it was 3rd & 4 for the Niners. A first down, for all intents, secures the win for SF. Pre-snap, it was clear to anyone paying attention that Brandon Aiyuk (left side slot) was uncovered. McDuffie, who would have been covering him, tipped his hand EARLY that he was blitzing off the weakside edge. Jennings, Purdy's target on the play, was to the left of Aiyuk on the boundary. Purdy never looked that way, and I'm guessing that 1) he was attempting to manipulate the safeties to the other side & 2) he was thinking that if he never looked that way, Sneed would think Jennings wasn't his target. Had he looked, he would have seen Aiyuk was going to be open. At the snap, Purdy looked at and attempted to throw to Jennings; but McDuffie, as Aiyuk drifted WIDE OPEN toward the middle of the field, was in Purdy's face & blocked the pass.

Fact:::: 49er offense did better against KC defense than KC offense did against 49ers defense. Regulation ended in a tie because KC kicking game destroyed 49er's kicking game or you might say the 49er kicking game mostly destroyed itself by having a frickin blocker stand directly on the exact spot where a very ordinary simple punt landed with zero awareness of where he stood. At least if an interception occurs , you can say interceptions happen in most games in modern football. Personally, I can not ever remember a punt landing diretly on a blocker on the fly like that. That's how awful and exceptionally bsad that kicking game play was If Purdy or Mahomes CAUSED THAT to happen then those two deserve to be credited for the big play that decided this close game. I think Purdy is a level of player above Jimmy, but it's hard not to credit the Shanahan Effect for Purdy's play. Purdy will never really get the credit he deserves in San Francisco because of the quality of play Shanahan got from Kirk Cousins and Jimmy G, unless Shanahan shows a willingness to update his office to include more of the boots and out of pocket stuff Purdy is actually really good at.

Could someone please provide a list of this great number of people who are so radically critical of Brock Purdy? I see and hear so many complaints about these people who are unfairly criticizing him, but I do not hear this abundant unjust criticism happening. Cam Newton criticized Brock Purdy. That is one. Chris Simms, Dan Orlovsky, Rich Eisen, Mike Florio, Kurt Warner ... and on and on and on major figures in the media most unanimously agree that Brock Purdy has performed his role as an NFL quarterback in a successful, productive manner. Everyone complains about those who unfairly judge him, but this abundance of unfair criticism seems really to be nothing but the mutterings of a quiet minority. I cannot think of a single prominent NFL media analyst who has vigorously attacked Brock Purdy for his failings. (Cam Newton is one.) Brock Purdy seems to receive most unanimous respect from the members of the media, but everyone complains about his critics. These critics, to me, seem to be nothing but a strawman, easily critiqued because it is mostly imaginary.

Everyone keeps saying "Why didn't they run the ball more?" I saw the game and CMC was running out of juice at the end of the 3rd! Now, Niners have very good RBs in Mitchell and Mason, so they could have helped CMC with the workload. I think that maybe they should have done more check-downs, and shorter plays with Kittle, because KC's defense had extremely good coverage in the secondary.

He had a chance to win it in regular time and didn't. Eventually he was gonna lead a scoring drive.

Purdy, in his first full season, beat ALL other QB's in the league in CPOE. The rbsdm site compares all Quarterbacks in their chart by plotting Passing Efficiency (EPA/P; that's Expected Points Added per Play) vs. CPOE. Brock Purdy is all alone in the top right corner.

    • @rg5886
      @rg5886 7 місяців тому

I think there’s 3 main main factors that led to his draft position.
      1. He ranks relatively low on physical metrics compared to other QBs in the draft class, which plays an outsized role in how players are evaluated and talked about. One interesting thing to note is that after working with 49ers coaches in the offseason, his arm speed increased significantly.
      2. His performance (and the teams performance) declined in his senior year. Iowa State fans could fill in the details, but my understanding is this was at least in part due to coaching changes.
      3. In college he had a tendency to make boneheaded mistakes when trying to do it all himself and played hero ball. He has obviously cleaned this up a ton.
With all the above as context I’m not surprised he was drafted low, but I also think it was a big miss from scouts/analysts regardless.
