The bloke at 7 mins 50 secs in is my grandfather. He died in the early 1990s aged 86. You probably caught him on this video going to the betting shop as that is all he did for the last 20 years of his life. Never saw the Humber Bridge but then again he had seen enough of the Humber in all of his years going up and down it, never knowing if he would come back. He never said he had been interviewed but is was a real gem of a find on You Tube. Cheers.

Thank you for this video. My late husband ran a second hand shop on Hessle Road, when there was a thriving community.

Really good video. I was born and raised on Hessle Road. My grandad was a trawler man and lived off gillet Street. I've moved to Lincolnshire now but still have my Hessle road accent 😂

This was really nice to watch, I spent my early years down eton street - we moved onto gypsyville just before it was demolished. I remember going down to the docks with my dad to pick up his wage packet. Nice trip down memory lane - thank you for sharing.

In April 1985 I moved to Hull to begin my student nurse training at Hull Royal Infirmary. I used to go down Hessle Road almost daily, mostly for shopping but also nightlife. It was clear how much the area had suffered from the loss of the fishing fleet, it was considered more 'down at heel' than Anlaby Road, Spring Bank and Beverley Road, about as bad as Holderness Road and Hedon Road - My father worked on Hedon Road at a chemical factory until he died in 1978. Thank you, it's good to remember where we come from. I have lived in Liverpool now for 20 years and seen a lot of change in that time here too.

Enjoyed this. I was only 1 in '85 but I'm from Hull and I find the old videos and pictures of it fascinating.
I think some people may disagree with me, as there always seems to be a feeling within Hull that things only get worse, but for me Hessle Road & Holderness Road still have that community feel to them - still, in 2016. Can't say the same for Newland Ave etc, these two have retained their working class spirit.

Hi Paul. My name is Jo Byrne - I'm just writing a thesis on Hull and Hessle Road after the Cod Wars. I've been interviewing members of the former fishing community about this time and this video really brings to life what people have been telling me. I think this is a great archive. Hope you'll keep it safe and do something with it in the future. Kind Regards. Jo.

Every Saturday afternoon I used to go on a pub crawl from Pop's to Rayners, then on to Halfway, then on my crawl back I used to pass St Georges Road, where my Aunty Maud (Bean Street) always asked before I went out to pop into Mallory's and fetch her a Gallon of Pink Paraffin, a Maffu Fly Strip...and a new Gas Mantle for the cat.
Then after another 'one or two' in Rayners before I would stagger into Boyes's to get some liquorice Allsort's for me Gran...another couple in Pop's before it was Homeward bound.

Yes Tony,I remember showing it to you. I was one of the team. I did all the dock shots, and the names of the streets, 3 seconds each. We ran out of money during the editing. We had only one week, which in those days editing took a long time.

Utterly heartbreaking to sea the destruction of the infrastructure that had taken generations to build just to build a few shops, none of which are even needed anymore. Whole communities of people who were exploited and finally dumped by the faceless rich folk who raped the industry then simply moved on. I used to think corruption was exaggerated but as I grew older it has become so obvious. Hessle Road still survives against all odds.

Job centre sent me to a YTS place down st James street in 1988.The vauxhall tavern building on the corner is number 1 hessle rd I believe. They sent me on a work placement with a guy called Tommy Walker a haulier who transported the kits of fish from the market then Albert and William Wright docks To various fish merchants. Then we'd collect the heads (offal) and tip them at the fish meal place further down the dock in this big metal hopper thing that ground them into fishmeal. You wouldn't of wanted to fall into that, health and safety thin on the ground with that machine. Then it was back to the merchants to collect the fillets and deliver them to fish and chip shops around hull.Tommy was well in his 60's then and used a toyota hiace. But if the days graft was going to be busier he'd go to his lock up and get his old ford d series flatbed out.His operation was on the downscale then so the toyota did for most days .His vehicles were blue.Baxters were red and cutsforths biege/brown.I liked Tommy.A gentleman from old school. But there were some on the docks I despised.Bully fuckers who tuned into my shyness and were shite pots.Anyway Tommy looked after me for my 2 years on the YTS.And that's a slice of life I won't forget.Hessle road nowadays 1st things to mind=Drugs, prostitution and decline.

    Hello
We are currently trying to put together a music video that deals with Hull through the years and came across this wonderful video you have posted about Hessle Road in the 1980s. We wondered if you would be willing to let us usea few clips from it as background footage in our video? We're doing it as a labour of love (none of us are getting paid for it), so unfortunately we're having to rely on people's good will rather than offering money; but we'd obviously give you whatever credits you wanted in the finished piece. If you think this is something that you would be interested in, then that'd be fantastic. This video in particular captures the spirit of the song.
