I know when I was a kid I drove all my friends and family crazy singing this song or asking them to sing it.

The only band member that was part of Ray's group seemed to only be Buddy Emmons, and he wasn't a permanent member at this point. I didn't recognize any of the other musicians/singers as being Cherokee Cowboys. I was surprised Blondie wasn't on piano.

jeriw That is Jerry Whitehurst on piano and Hoot Hester on the fiddle. Jerry played piano in the Grand Ole Opry staff band for many years. I was fortunate to see Ray in concert with Blondie on piano just before Blondie passed away, one of the highlights of my life, the show was fantastic!!!

shuffle877 I think I've seen Hoot Hester on fiddle before and possibly with Ray but he wasn't a Cherokee cowboy. Sometimes on these videos Ray didn't bring many members with him. Ray and Blondie were the best of friends. The two of them had a routine they would do, Rancho Grande and then snipe at each other, really, really good.

It gets a lot better. Ralph Mooney, who with Chuck Seals wrote this song, would be the #1 choice on pedal steel, nothing against Jimmy Day or Buddy Emmons. Shorty Lavender and Tommy Jackson could be on twin fiddles. And Van Howard could be leaning in to sing “Tennessee Tenor” harmony. Unfortunately, Ray got delusions of grandeur in the late 1960’s and switched careers from a first rate country singer to a Jerry Vale clone. This performance is more country than most of his output around this time, but it’s still country music for people who really don’t like country music.

The one singer that could sing this song the way it should be sung. Regarding the backup vocalists...I believe the lady of the far left was Jana King? Can anyone confirm this? Thanks for posting!
    God Bless,
    Jeff :)

This was from Nashville Now. The backup singers are Jana King-Evans, Perry Rhodes, Donna Rhodes and Craig Morris
