I think you could have done a better job explaining when to do this process. If you do it to wet, freshly-sculpted clay there's a very good chance that you will damage or distort the sculpture. It is better to wait until the outside, at least, is "leather hard" but you need to give beginning students some guidance to know exactly when that is.

What happens if I fire the sculpture without removing the wires?
Hey there. It will just break. The clay shrinks when water leaves. If you leave it it will break it the clay and then melt the aluminum
