It wasn’t an actor with prosthetics but the man himself. The movie was so good technically that most scenes with both dad and son on it were seamless in presentation. You should look at the flashback scene where Kamalhaasan’s face was superimposed in an actual footage with freedom fighter Netaji Subash Chandra Bose and was made to look very authentic. Also the 70mm footage was converted to 35mm and noise added to it to bring authenticity to the whole scene. This film is fricking brilliant technically that most people would miss the subtle nuances in the shots. In this very song you can see father and son nod and dance and move around where a cupboard is in the background. The entire cupboard was CG and you can see these images on the glass of it. Such was the subtle use of CG in this movie apart from some very obvious cheesy CG work to satisfy commoners too.
Spot on. And the cupboard glass reflection was achieved superbly in kamal's MMKR (Micheal Madhana Kama Rajan) itself. This is much later. Such is his eye to detail and tech especially.
Did you notice that there is a mistake in the CG work? :-) The reflection is wrong. When Kamal is facing us (camera) the cupboard glass should show his back - right? Look again, it shows Kamal's front that we're already seeing. They super-imposed the same video on the CG cupboard to create the reflection effect, however missed that the glass is supposed to show their backs! :-) I wish I could take a screenshot and show you what I'm talking about. But check this timestamp 6:20 to 6:25 in this video. You'll know!

Take for example,Pushpak taken at his peak - a definite risk doing such a movie when he was at his peak n the genre has never been attempted by a top hero or any hero in India in the last 50 years.Guna- a classic cult, Mahanadhi- the last Tamil movie that made whole audience in theatre cry.I watched it and saw many cry in theater during my school days and everyome saying its hard to watch such emotional movies.Many applauded Kamal n felt its very heavy after the legendary Shivaji's Paasamalar.

Have to note this point. hero Kamal is on a anti bribery drive. In this song, his daughter cries when she runs out of paper to make paper boats and he will pull out a few 500 rupee notes to let her make the boats for her small joyous moment. The same hero will not bribe 500 Rupee to save his daughter from burn injuries in the climax. A great directorial touch but many left it unnoticed.

But in the next scene he is shown calling Indian officials from Foreign land saying he will be back when ever Indians need him.

The actor in old getup is Kamal Hassan and the voice didnt include any sound mixing software as its dubbed by him as it is.Also the actor was not recognized by public while shooting the movie.considering the cost in 1996 ,the CGI was better (though it shows in some places very clearly) and for the first time explored to such an extent in India ,shankar did it too well.Also with regards to Nayagan,the effect of that speech could be seen in real life by many in south India as people tend to have beetle leaf paan.

Kamal hasan is acting from the days before he start his schoolings... He is "The Best" in acting,direction,music, dance and what not.. He is told as an encyclopedia by people from film industry. Such a knowledgeable person.
Fun Fact:
The climax of the scene was inspired from the death of freedom fighter Subash Chandra Bose, who was said to have died after after his overloaded Japanese plane crashed in Japanese-occupied Formosa. The climax of the film shows a car crashing into a fuel truck close to a plane and all three blasting and killing Kamal Haasan. But in the next scene he is shown calling Indian officials from Foreign land saying he will be back when ever Indians need him.
