  • Just gathering all my 776 Mics and got a few fully going. Got 2 Brown Stripes going for my Mark 3 and R27/S23 and got an Orange Stripe going for my Sikscreened Mark 4A. It's not much info on the net about the 776 Mics but they all were originally powered by the radio, no internal battery. The Brown stripe came with late Mark 's and the Orange strip came with the Mark IV's. None originally had a hole so you could adjust the output without taking the cover off. People would cut a hole so they could adjust the output without taking the bottom cover off. The Mark 3 which had a 2 pin plug used Pin 1 for audio, Pin 2 for transmit and the ground was connected to the metal shell of the mic plug. How it got power from the radio to the Mic is Pin 2 had 300v coming from the HV relay minus side that was grounded to key the relay. The Mic just used a resistor and zener to tap off 5v from the 300 line for the amp board in the Mic. Since the Mark IV'A's had 4 pin Mic plugs, all the lines where separate, plus Browning used a low voltage relay and pulled the voltage off the low voltage circuits in the Mark IV'A's. To me this was an upgrade over the HV used in the Mark 3. However, I hate the early PLL used in a Mark IV, but like the upgraded PLL used in the Mark IVA. I have seen people say and ask about a Mark IV being 'upgraded'. To my knowledge, the upgrade that was done to a Mark IV was to convert it to a IVA. I know of no IV's that have upgrades except for the non factory upgrade PLL Nomad used to sell years ago, but those are unobtainium now.
