Oh this was amazing! I love seeing the processes of other writers and you have inspired me to get back to my own writing. Loved your updates and how you deal with the little challenges that come up in the process. Most people don't understand how noises outside can be really distracting. I'm glad you were able to power through and finish your first draft.
Congrats on finishing the first draft. I so appreciate you sharing your thoughts and work process. Some of the strongest writing, in my opinion, is when writers show scenes from different point of view of the characters 👏👏
Thank you! I know not everyone will be interested in my thoughts on writing but I find it interesting in other people's vlogs. So I'm glad you found it interesting and/or useful!
I'am very motivated by your videos to start writing because you've given me some different ideas on how to write. For instance, dictation and putting on the headphones to keep you focused. Did you have music playing on your headphones?.
That's awesome - I'm so glad you're motivated to write! There are so many different ways to write and some things will work better for each person than others. I'm still getting used to dictating but by the time I edit I can't tell which scenes I've dictated and which I've typed! I use a Spotify ambient playlist. That's working best for me right now. I go into a bit more detail about why that works for me in a previous video if you're interested (ua-cam.com/video/gYWN16oxXvQ/v-deo.html). I also discuss how I dictate in more detail which might also be of use to you.
I signed up for your newsletter, and your website is great. I'm doing something similar (news, website, some writing, painting, blogging, etc) and i haven't figured out how to do the enews thing very well yet but am persevering ~ Nan
After watching this I reckon I could try writing a chronological outline or plan for my story rather than take it in whatever direction my mind comes up with. On the other hand, I do like surprising myself. Have you thought about blurring out the details of what your story is about when you’re showing us your plan? I’ve seen a few UA-camrs protect their work that way.
I'll be honest and say my outline generally doesn't get to that level of completion until I'm almost finished the book :) I tend to write the first third with only a vague plan and some ideas about the key scenes in the rest of the book, then fill it in as I go. My plotting board helped with that fill-in process. I have tried outlining the whole thing at the start but then it tends to veer off course anyway. I'm more of a discovery writer! I did think about blurring it out but then decided there wasn't really much information that could be of use to anyone :) I might in future.
Following with interest. Did you read a lot of romance novels? The reason I ask is I have never read them but would like to try my hand at writing them. Possible? Perhaps mystery might be more appropriate, I am a mystery buff.
I think it would be definitely more challenging to write romance if you don't read it. Like mysteries, thrillers etc, there are reader expectations that you have to meet which would probably be more difficult to understand without reading it. I wouldn't say impossible though if you were willing to study how the genre works! Good luck!
Yes, my romances mostly end up around that 40-50K mark. It seems to be my sweet spot. I do have one Xmas novella that's around 25K and my women's fiction from memory is around 80K.

3:54 I've never seen a writing process outlined like that. How cool! Thanks for sharing!
You're so welcome! I'm a spreadsheet nerd :)
I just found your channel! Im so happy to discover another GenX romance writer!
Thanks for sharing your process!

I’ve been wanting to write myself, your videos are very inspiring. ❤ Thank you and Keep on Trucking. ☮️

Good luck with the newsletter! I use MailerLite for mine since it's the cheapest for what I need and I'm happy with that.

Yes! The first third first. Totally agree.

I wanted to ask you, are your novels around the 50 thousand word length on completion?

It’s a great length to read too.
