  • Here is classic must-know solo transcription! Lester Young on "Shoe Shine Boy" which he performed live witrh Count Basie back in 1936, recorded in Chicago 1936. This is a two chorus rhythm change solo with tons of great melodic lines, as well as really interesting rhythmic ideas! This is one of the elemental jazz saxophone solo's you probably should know, or at least should have played through a few times. Lester Young at it's finest, although he was always at his finest. Shoe Shine Boy is a tune that isn't easily found in a real book.

The more I see of transcribed solos, particularly those of Lester's, the more I realize it's not what you play but how you play it that is important: the timing, the little nuances of pitch and inflection etc. As the song says: "It Ain't What You Do It's the Way That You Do It."

I don't know if you take suggestions for transcriptions at the moment, but if you do, check out the Alto solo on Night in Tunisia on Itchy Fingers "Full English Breakfast" .. Fast as Parker, cool as Desmond - one of my favorites :)

Hi man, I surely try to check out what people suggest. If uit catches the attention, it sometimes does happen that I find myself transcribing it :) I know Itchy Fingers, I've been having one of their solo's on my list for a long time on another tune. Don' know the tune you're mentioning, but they are great! I'll try to check it out!

What do the plus signs mean above the notes?

Here, it means that Pres is using the side D key with no octave key rather than the conventional middle D (with octave key). It indicates a "false" fingering which gives a different texture and sounds more airy.
