"If you are a beginner or an intermediate-level player, do not expect to jump right in and play them all note for note... if you feel that attempts to duplicate certain grace notes are unsuccessful and hindering your progress to a considerable degree, simply ignore them until you have become proficient with the more basic aspects of that tune"
Earl put that so nicely in the book you mentioned and I think that's important to point out. I consider myself a beginner and sometimes get way ahead of myself but I'm having so much fun I don't really get frustrated. It's like trying to go too fast down hill on a skateboard - those speed wobbles will tell you right away if you're trying something beyond your current skill level.
Thanks for a great installment in this series.

I really like the songs you choose to sing. So many over the years. Lately your version of Big Sciota and Time To Move On blew me away. So many others though I could go on and on. Seems like we have the exact same taste in music and I always look forward to your videos.

    Dear Josh Turknett
I’m working my way through the 8 Essential Steps clawhammer series; I’m up to step 7 and taking it slow (which doesn’t come naturally to me!)
I’ve just discovered the similar series for 2 finger thumb lead. Is it possible/ sensible to learn both styles concurrently or would that be foolhardy/ counterproductive?
I’ve played guitar for many years and have taken up and fallen in love with the banjo to have the challenge of being a beginner again .
I’m also inspired by your assertion that one can learn at any age ( I’m 68)
I’m very eager but don’t want to overload the neuroplasticity developmental aspect of learning.
    Many thanks, Phillip

Paraphrasing; "Zero correlation between how difficult something is to play, with how good it sounds, and how much others appreciate it." That's one of those concepts that takes people a looooong time to figure out. It is very true. Some of the best banjo breaks in a jam are played by people who sprinkle in a few melody notes across some very basic, but in time, rolls.

I have previously joined the breakthru banjo course but quit for the summer farming season. Now I'd like to start again but thsi comes up. "You already have a subscription to this Membership. Please update your payment details on the existing subscription instead of purchasing again." When I try to do that I get the following message. "ERROR: You have a problem with one or more of your subscriptions. To prevent any lapses in your subscriptions please visit your Subscriptions page to update them." So it circles from one message to the next. Please help. I was also unable to find a place to leave comments.
