This PSP-only remake of Square's RPG classic is easily my favorite way to play FF4 if I'm not on an SNES - the graphics, sound, translation, and rebalancing all make an excellent game even better than it already was.
This version is actually harder than the US FF 2 we got, as the one we got was labelled Easy Type in Japan. Seems the PS1, PSP, and DS versions were all based on what we know as FF 4 Hard Type in Japan (pretty much the standard version Japanese players played back in the day). I have this on SNES and PS1, I do want to add more Final Fantasy to my collection, the DS and PSP versions look enticing. I still want the PSP Final Fantasy remakes, the GBA ones, and the DS ones. Those, and PS1's Final Fantasy Origins (first remakes of 1 and 2, would go nicely with FF Chronicles, and Anthology, both long in my collection), and GBA FF Tactics to go alongside my PS1 FF Tactics as well.
@@Bloodreign1 I'm not sure what all got ported to PSP besides 4, but play FF V, VI, VII, IX, and Tactics if you haven't already. Those titles ARE Final Fantasy. The rest are forgettable imo. 8 was just average, not bad. 10 was... alright... The new ones after 10 are something completely different and forgettable, and 1-3 I haven't bothered with. I hear some say decent things about 3, not so much the other two. So idk about 1-3
I have V on PS1, 6 on SNES and PS1, 7, 8 and 9 on PS1, I won't play any past 9. I have Tactics, it is a damned fine game. I also fancy getting the GBA Tactics as well.
I really like this FFIV version on PSP. It has got the original game and two sequels included (Interlude and the After Years). Sadly this collection was never released in my native language (Italian), at least until it was completely fan-translated by a ROM hacking group!
I would recommend trying this version once PSP's arent expensive and if you dont wanna buy one try a emulator like PPSSPP I really like the SNES Version too but i think this ones a little nicer because you can have the SNES Music too
I found this and the Final Fantasy 3 PSP games at a flea market in absolutely perfect condition for 5 bucks a piece a couple of years ago. Haven't actually played them yet (not much of a portable gamer, but I like the PSP for it's tv output options), but damn, this looks good. I still like FF4 better than 6, though I know that's typically not a popular opinion.
@@sabianwatts8515 there's an android version of ff5 which you can play on pc using bluestacks (basically an android emulator) i replayed it on my phone itself though lol i think it's the best version of ff5 out right now?
I love this Final Fantasy more than any other (although 6 is a close second) because it focuses on the maturation of a hero as he sheds the darkness that traps him. FF6 is excellent and has the better story, but is more of an ensemble act (even if Tina/Terra is a major plot hinge) and tries to give the spotlight equally to all characters. There's just something satisfying about finishing Mt. Ordeals, getting your chicken hat and thumping the shit out of Zeromus.
By the way, NOTHING compares to the perfection of the SNES's sound chip and no matter how many orchestras play it, I prefer the original soundtrack over any other version.
A little late but at 8:44:26, I seem to be the only FF4 player who actually brings the 3 elemental (fire, ice and thunder) claws for Edge to use here. Equip him with the thunder claw and while his attack power is significantly less than using two katanas, it seems to make his attack totally lightning based and can sometimes destroy most of the enemies here in one attack. As for the 4 bosses, fire claw on Scarmiglione, thunder claw on Cagnazzo and Barbariccia and ice claw on Rubicante makes it much easier.
Would you ever of FF4 Intelude and/or The After Years as well? I always enjoy watching rpg's from you, cause you truly show everything without skipping and editing out too much.
The PSP version looks SO far better then the shitty low-rez polygons of the DS, mobile and PC travesties. Course I'm playing on an emulator to upscale the graphics even better.
Sprites age far better than polygons. Sprites age like fine wine, polygons like spoiled milk. The 3D remake is also not running 60 FPS, which is a travesty, yet some have the gall to say it's the best version. They might want to get their brains checked, they are senile. This has the most content, 3 games in 1 package.
Thanks for doing this playthrough. It's rad to see this update to one of my all-time favorite games. I'm surprised that you kept Edge in the back row for so much of the playthrough, especially for the Giant of Babil where you keep Fusoya up front and he keeps getting smacked down haha. Do Edge's katanas skip the back-row attack penalty or something and I never knew? Personally I like to keep Kain in the back because the jump attack doesn't have a back-row penalty, and with his heavy armor combined with the back-row defense he's practically unstoppable. I'd love to hear more about the reasoning behind some of your strats.
Sprites this beautiful will never age, 3D polygons on the other hand, age horribly. This, and the original version are my type of game, 2D hand drawn sprites, and not horrible HD sprites, though these sprites are cleaned up, but still look like sprites. Not everything has to be 3D, especially for those of us who grew up with and were spoiled by 2D spritework.
NICE!!^^ Never played this version of the game before or the "SNES" original but, Have Played the "PS1" port and "DS" version!!...and still yet to beat 'em!! that "DS" version feels more difficult, but I LOVE the production values put in with the rearranged soundtrack, charming chibi 3D models and voice acting!!(GOSH!! Absolutely LOVE the "Nintendo DS" sound capabilities!!!) (> w
DS and PS1 versions (and this one) are the same difficulty, both based off the normal FF 4 Japan got, and not the Easy Type they also released there, and the same Easy Type brought over to the west as our FF 2.
I'm very confused as to what the hell this is. Is this the PSP compilation package of 'The After Years + the remake of the original game in the HD sprite format instead of the DS polygons? Then can someone please tell me what the soundtrack is? Did they re-use the DS soundtrack for this???
Hi there! If you don’t mind, I have a question for you. On the Final fantasy fandom (wiki) website, there is a page that lists all of the abilities available in the game. There is a section that covers the ones in the 2D versions (including the PSP “Complete Collection” version) and a section that covers the ones in the 3D versions. In the section for the 2D versions, the descriptions of the abilities are written in italics, which normally implies that they are directly taken from the game. However, I’ve noticed that only the 3D versions of the game have an in-game “Abilities” menu, while none of the 2D versions (again, including the PSP version) have it. Which made me wonder, how can these descriptions be taken from the game if the game doesn’t have an “Abilities” menu? This is actually important, because one of the descriptions is missing (the one for the “Miracle” ability) and I wanted to add it, but I can’t just phrase it the way I want because it has to come directly from the game. So my question is as follows: how do you have access, in the PSP version, to the abilities’ descriptions? Is there a place where you can actually read them, either in the game itself, or in the manual? Because if there isn’t, then it means the page is wrong by having the descriptions written in italics, because they are not actually from the game, but have simply been written by editors. And if that’s the case, then I can simply add the description for the “Miracle” ability myself. I know my comment may be a bit confusing, but this is actually kind of important to me. I’ve already asked the question on the fandom/wiki myself, and someone has responded by saying that you can actually find the abilities’ descriptions in the PSP version, but he didn’t explain how, so I’m really not sure if he’s actually right. So thanks a lot in advance for taking the time to read me and answer my question.

IMO, I think that Porom shouldn't have hit her twin brother just for telling Yang the truth about the monk himself getting used by the Baron kingdom soldiers the way they did. I'm glad that Yang knew that Palom told the truth, that the young mage in training was right to ask how the soldiers could just play him like that. Yang had amnesia for a while, after all.
New to final fantasy! Just beat og 7 now starting this on psp. This game is really good and a good remaster. Ff7 I still liked more so far but we will see! Love the opening songs of ff4. The battles are a little different but I’m getting used to it.

Such a great version of a great game, but it’s stuck on a 16 year old system that has long since been discontinued. I would absolutely rebuy this day 1 if it got a Nintendo Switch rerelease.

I much prefer 3d remake simply because of the fact that it has animated enemies. Ugh, it's such a disgusting, backward "tradition": make a game in which you literally forcing the player to fight many, many foes without even showing an actual fighting on the screen.
That 3D remake is ugly as sin, bearing PS1/Saturn/early PS2 type polygons, and having a lower framerate, no thanks. The only thing that saves it is the voice acting.
