Have you got much experience with Static Grass Applicators? How do you find them as a tool? If you enjoyed the video, do make sure to check Ciara out on twitch at www.twitch.tv/ciara_elvenblood 😎
tbh most of the time you can get a better result by blowing on it to impart static charges to each blade of grass. High-strength flock boxes seem to be more effective than applicators
I’ve used static grass on a couple of projects. I generally run bright 2 mill then medium 4 or 6 mill then a brownish 8 or 12 mill. The other trick is i use a small keyboard vac with a nylon stocking over the tip of the hose while the glue is still wet to help the grass stand and suck up any that isn’t securely in the glue. If you suck any extra grass up after each bit is put down you can re-use the grass for your next project.
I genuinely love the honesty as Ciara works things out. Don’t know how many times my internal narrator makes a lot of these comments. Please keep going with the content as it really does brighten my day
I've never used a static grass applicator. Basically because I never knew how to use it! Thanks for the instructions and the hint of where to put your hands. Never knew what to do with them either!
Great video, Ciara's process of working out how do do something is pretty much most peoples internal conversation. i think thats why these videos are so popular. Must try this oout as it does look cool, despite the mess :)
Dear Ciara! Top tip just for u!! When u doing the tufts on baking paper, do small lil dots of glue, but under the baking paper put a damp piece of paper towel, it will help make the base conductive for the static grass to stand up! Love u lots! From JakeDogg 🥰🐶❤️💐
Tip for Olly and Ciara: Have a small length of copper or aluminum wire (about 2" to 3" long and either 16, 18, 20 or 22 gauge) clipped into the teeth of that alligator clip. Touch that wire into the glue/adhesive, so that the low voltage current is now traveling from the wire into the glue/adhesive then through the grass and back the metal mesh on the static grass applicator. This very low voltage circuit which is created is how the static grass ends up standing up. Also do not worry about being shocked because this is again very low voltage. In the case of the applicator which you are using, only being battery operated you'll not even feel any even if it was to short out. Even if you were using a wall plugin applicator, most likely the plus itself is a step down transformer and converter (the step down transformer is lowering the voltage from a high voltage to a low voltage. The converter is converting the current from AC to DC) so again you should have nothing to worry about. If you like to better see what I'm talking about for a wire and it being used you may want to checkout the Luke Towan channel. He makes some of the most amazing dioramas and in most of them he is using a static grass applicator at some point in the build.
yeah I've seen people get really long grass with one of these. I had totally forgot about them TBH, I kept meaning to get one off a fella on eBay, but they were like 150 quid (at least) hopefully they are cheaper now, as that was in like 2014 when I last wanted to buy one.
@@D00M3R-SK8 I believe that if you can do some simple soldering that there are videos on UA-cam as to how to make a Static Grass Applicator for pretty cheap. 150 pounds is freaking crazy expensive! Here in the States they list on places like Amazon for about $70 to $90. So that should be about 50 to 70 pounds off of my rough currency conversion in my head if you live in the UK. I would check out Amazon UK personally to see what they are listening for there compare that to your local game and hobby stores. I always promote buying from your local stores first because here in the States those are the places where you'll be able to play your games with out having to build your own gaming table and have room for it. Along with finding others to play with/against.
@@Winterydee They likely have came down in cost now I would think. I was last going to buy one in around 2014. They were an incredibly niche product back then. Mostly model train enthusiast bought them, and people that made tufts to sell in small shops. I'll have to check out the "flock it" and see how much it goes for. I can solder, but haven't soldered anything since the mid 90's. I did electronics at school so I made my own circuit boards and stuff like that.
Brilliant video 👍 like you I’ve watched tutorials before trying it, Luke’s as well but don’t feel competent yet. It’s so refreshing to see someone try it for the first time. Now I don’t feel such a failure 🤣 Thank you Ciara you’ve boosted my confidence with using static grass, and I mean that as a very big compliment 😁
Having seen Luke make a load of grass for his 24 hour build I was fascinated by the process. "I don't think you could kill yourself with this . . ." "I'm so scared" The suspense, this is great!
Absolutely love how she got out the grease proof paper and disposed of the packaging 😂 Love your videos and your progression is unreal. Keep up the good work! I live up in Northern Ireland but would love to visit your shop sometime in the future. Cheers!
Great first intro for someone new to the hobby to a static grass applicator. But, matching nails and phone case? That is a whole new level of nerd commitment there.
This was awesome one issue is new people's fear of electric shock, that should be made easy and first thing out of the box because the fear of that can put people off. Well made video. Looking forward to what models you use these techniques in the future. Keep up the good work.
Ciara : Great if you have all these bits and pieces at hand but to some of us old hands, me included I prefer dousing my bases thru female stockings (Yes I might be a bit old fashioned but its how I grew up, use what it on hand).
Gonna be honest I think the static applicator is a bit of a gimmick originally made for hard-core diorama makers, a gently blow will make most of the grass stand straight while the glue is still tacky
If the batteries were supplying 120mA at 50Hz, you'd be dead. Since they output far less, the only bit you need to be scared of, is squeezing your fingers with the clamp...
I'd lick it for a laugh. I grabbed an electric fence in the rain once, wasn't pleasant. I still get pains in my chest from it to this day. It was a total accident though, I didn't meant to grab the electric fence. It was there to protect some horses I think, and I didn't know it was electrified. The fact my hand was soaking wet did not help at all. hahaha.
Hi Ciara and Oliver, great video, thank you both! Any suggestions or links to be able to buy the same Static Grass Applicator that you showed? Thank you in advance!
Hi, the reason I am here is because I watched Luke's applicator comparison vid and he really rated the Flocit. The thing is that the Green Scene website has zero information about the device other than the price and there is no phone number or email address to contact them. I saw that you had a Flocit in your video thumbnail and was wondering if you could possibly help? do you know what the power level is on this device as in KV? and what size grass it can do? I appreciate that this vid is two years old and that you may not read this but I thought I'd ask anyway.
Is there a way to get the grass standing without the elecric applicator? Because more than 100 € only for doing my bases with it is a bit too expansive.
Ooh, is this like a cheaper version of a static applicator? I always wanted to get one of those static applicators, but they aren't cheap. You can make your own tufts as well with these. I know a few guys that make tufts on eBay.
i like your videos, but i cant understand why you recommend this. looks very intricate filling and unfilling the thing and cleaning up all the mess afterwards for a little and just ok effect. in other words this doesnt motivate at all using this "tool"
7:37 - 2mm static grass and 6mm static grass does not equal 8mm static grass... what an insane proposal?! 6mm and 2mm will result in 6mm and 2mm grass, they aren't going to attach ends to become longer!?!
You can probably chill a little there. You absolutely can layer static grass. It's not "4mm + 2mm = 6mm", as such, but starting with a 2mm base and layering longer grasses onto will give you taller patches on top of the 2mm. You do need to apply glue in between (something like WWS layering glue) and go from there, as grass won't stick to grass. I was shown and taught by Geek Gaming. Guess it's a play a figure it out kind of thing.
I love Ciara! I know this is 11 months old - in some way I hope she never becomes competent. If she ever stops saying "I'm scared" I'll stop watching. 😁

Best Irish comment.. "For the love of God!" Great attempt and I would say that it was a successful result.
I was aware of these applicators, was kind of unsure of what effect they made. Perfect video for someone like me who had no idea what it was for.

Another entertaining and informative video! You guys are so funny and you work so hard. Big thank you, you're awesome

@@naphaneal I've done that before as well :D
Seems like this isn’t used much in the mini community. I wonder why? More common for railroading and perhaps dioramas it seems.
Seems to be used by diorama and board build people, yeah. :)
Oh bugger!
You hear that a lot in my hobby space, well maybe a little less SFW than bugger....

Don't do this at home it'll make a mess, use Broadsword's studio instead 😅

any advice if Im making dioramas using IC like NE555¿¿ does static affect it¿¿
