    Doing this with the SNES sound chip was impressive for its time.

    It's like when Capcom released Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams which had a option of switching to the Japanese language with english subs. In the English setting, the two Ayumi Hamasaki songs are omitted. But if you switch it over to Japanese, all of the sudden the songs appear. Licensing issues my ass, they just wanted to change it. Localization was very common back then but I think most companies are starting to get the message, fans like to hear the original theme songs, even if it's translated.

    The sound soundchip has been underestimated, even by sony (who developed it)as nintendo figured out a way to get around those limitations by using the flex voice driver engine to swap samples in & out on the fly,heck you can even stream true 16bit audio trough the snes by disabling echo writes, so the snes turned out to be more capable then what was intended👍

    What I like the most about this game is the general design. Both the characters, the areas and the backgrounds during battle are very nicely done, very charming. I like the music as well

    Licensing issue. Namco didn't have the rights to use the song in versions released outside of Japan, most likely. Curiously enough, the track used in the International GBA version (Raising a Curtain, or whatever that world map theme was called) is the same tune that was used as an OP track for Narikiri Dungeon for the GameBoyColor.

    Tales of Phantasia and Star Ocean, are two high-level SNES games that used "streaming" sampling and swapped samples on the fly to overcome the 64KB limit of the SPC700 and to allow additional instruments and vocals. Thanks Wikipedia... that's how they got the singing in...won't work on an emulator tho

    @JonDay8bit Star Ocean was basically Tales of Phantasia ~ Star Trek Edition. It was made by former Namco Tales Studio programmers who left the studio and founded Tri-Ace. They basically used all of the same technical stuff from Phantasia.

    It's a really good opening song. Even better because it's voiced, and that was rare for SNES's history.

    This is very impressive on what the Super Famicom/Nintendo Entertainment System can do! You can hear the lyrics in the opening scene. I like the music! Too bad that I missed out on this. If I had known this was on the GBA, I would've purchased it. :(

      The GBA one they had to cut a lot out of (Like the entire cooking system) and I personally prefer the japanese attack announcements. The GBA ones were dubbed in English and really sound phoned-in by comparison.

    If you want my opinion, I kinda like this SNES op the best.
    If there's going to be a 3D version in the future, make it like this.
    ...or Namco can be REALLY smart and release 2 versions, like they did with Hearts.

  • @RadiantEdge027

    This is one of the biggest games on the SNES. Its a awesome game indeed. I never seen so many remakes of a game before. The Ps1 version was just awesome and the PSP version was the same but it was fully voiced and the graphics did get tweaked a bit as well.

  • @Tigerfog
    @Tigerfog 16 років тому

    Same here.
    Even if the sound capacity of the SFC was primitive compared to that of the PS1, the music were either more energetic or dramatic in the SFC version.
    I mean... compare "Be Absentminded" for the SFC and the one for PS1. That of the SFC is so much better.

    That's a tired excuse. The truth is Namco just didnt believe Americans would enjoy a song in Japanese. The one time that Namco did use the original theme was for Tales of Vesperia which was sung by Bonnie Pink who is fluent in both English & Japanese so they figured why not? They released like 10 Tales of games in the US & you mean to tell me every single one of them had licensing issues? Then all of a sudden they use the original for Vesperia.Its not whether they can or not its if they want to.

    actually it do work, as the video states as its obviously recorded from a emulator.
    But what you cant do is turn this into a .spc file, as the rest of the game is not there to upload the samples.

      It was rather clever that they essentially did what tracked music like in the original UT and many other Epic games did and played samples and patterns.

      I remember when I first downloaded the ROM for this back in college. I had my headphones plugged in because my roommate was studying. Edward Morrison's little quote came up and I was like, "Wow! That's cool! The whole thing was in audio!" And then the theme song started and I was like, "Ooh! This sounds neat!" And then when Yukari Yoshida's voice came on I blurted out, "HOLY SHIT! THIS IS AMAZING!!!!" and my roommate kicked me out of the room until he left for dinner.

    • @Bartlebycs
      @Bartlebycs 5 років тому

      @@TheouAegis I'm STILL amazed by this. I would have totally played this back then if it had been available in the west.

    • @TheouAegis
      @TheouAegis 5 років тому

      @@Bartlebycs Sadly, I tried to listen to the music in an SPC player and that was when I discovered it was all just hundreds of very short sound clips strung together. Then again, I thought that was also pretty cool.
      All of the spells were complete vocals, though. You could tell they didn't know what characters would cast which spells, so all the voice actors did all the spell incantations. It's kinda cool listening to all the audio samples. To this day, I still shout sometimes, "In dig-gu nay SHEE UN!" (Indignation!)

    You can find a PSX fan made english patch, that you can install at your original ToP or download one and burn in a cd to play in your PSX/PS2.
    Since the PSX version is by far the best one, you should get this, the translation is perfect.
    Check wikipedia or google, won't give any links here because youtube may consider it illegal and delete this post.

    I've been trying to figure out how that worked for a few days now... I thought that Fujishima only worked on the series from the PSX version onwards, and someone else did the designs for this one originaly... or they used his pictures and someone elses sprites (hence why the PSX version had different sprites)
    I dunno :)

    I'd recommend playing Tales of Grace f on the hardest innate difficulty setting. The CC system plus the enhanced difficulty should do it for you (though if you aren't in practice with your Tales game playing, I'd say maybe take it one step down from the hardest mode). While the CC system is certainly not new, Japan's Tales have had it for some time, it is certainly very challenging.

    Well... Final Fantasy VI was just a port of the Super Nintendo version. The graphics weren't meant to be upgraded. I agree that Tales of Phantasia has better graphics on a technical level, although in the end it comes down to taste - some may prefer FFVI's brighter colors over the murky Phantasia.

    I personally prefer gameplay in the PS1 version compared to SNES, it is annoying in the early parts of the game when you have to kill enemies using Cless who can't hit FLYING enemies unless leaping or attacking close with a spear/halberd. That pissed me off alot. Forest of Ymir is pain in the ass to get through (those who have played the SNES version should know what I'm talking about). The game is still worth a playthrough if you like JRPGs. Just a personal taste difference is I thought Mint was more likeable when Satomi Kōrogi voiced her in addition to how Mint's sprite was designed, Junko Iwao is not bad at all, but its just minor details
