Dame Kiri is just elegant, period. And I love listening to her crisp bright voice.

Kiri Te Kanawa always had a beautiful voice and a solid vocal technique, and a wonderful range. She does a beautiful job on this aria. She could be a dreadful bore at times though, sometimes i just wanted to goose that pretty behind of hers to get some nuane and emotion in her singing, when she was great she was great, but I remember hearibg her in a recital in WWashington,Dc at the Kennedy Center and struggling to stay awake cause she was such a bore.
i really cannot believe that she never recorded this. it is such a good fit for her range and the timbre of her voice. i missed out on seeing here in her melbourne performances but m boyfriend saw her as mimi. thanks for posting this. it's one of the loveliest clips i have seen on youtube.

@@walterbenjamin1386 Cerquetti was amazing , only one year of vocal training. She was originally going to be a violinist. She also was a second for Callas when Callas had vocal issues.
@@KSfan4ever One of the most beautiful renditions was done by Victoria De Los Angeles, who was born same year 1923 as Callas. No disrespect to Dame Kiri or Callas.
Much better than Renee's version. Still nobody beats Mirella Freni's version. Simply classic!
I think she sang this piece better than even Callas; for one thing, she's much sweeter-sounding and just as expressive and passionate. Many, many thanks for this exquisite video!P.S. I am now a Dame Kiri Lover too!

I can't say I agree. This performance is definitely one of the better ones. But, side-by-side, there is no comparison. The pain and anguish oozes from Callas' performance.

Totally agree with comments below. Tebaldi sings this aria with much more force, power, and emotion. Te Kanawa has a beautiful voice, but her interpretation of this aria is not as emotional as Tebaldi's.
If someone likes all the made up pseudo emotion of singers like Tebaldi and Callas...

Hmm... She starts weak but certainly builds up toward the end and finishes effectively, this work is highly dramatic and needs good acting with it - callas would be the best for this aria as she is best actor but she never acted this role!! pity. This aria is so beautiful thou, I don't think anybody with half a beautiful voice would not shine in it.
Catalani's orchestration and composition should give Verdi and Wagner a 360 in their graves.

For pure vocal sound, I give in to Angela. However interpretation with the feeling of the text I must say that Callas takes prize. For recordings or for live performance you may argue that the complete presentation should be the same. Perhaps. I like to be moved.

@anubis1974 You aren't talking of that Sarah Brightman who can't control her breath, has a tiny voice that can't be heard without microphone and sing opera arias emotionless, are you? Because if you are, I think you should listen better. Callas was the queen of pathos, Caballé the master of breath and Tebaldi had the voice og an angel... sorry, but Sarah should just listen to one of them sing this aria and then close her mouth.
How did Sarah Brightman even get a mention in this arena?

Each of them has her advantage - some of us prefer the one, others the other.

I have listened and have read the comments. Is there anyone commenting who actually understands Italian? The lyrics is a poem, the vowels are carriers of emotions. Too many pronunciation mistakes.She is an amazing singer, one of the best, but this is not chamber music, it is verismo. More chest voice in the high notes, more covering, scuro, open throat not narrow, would render the piece much more dramatic and authentic to the genere and period. Where is the expression? You can't sing an aria like this and look like you are thinking about what to buy for dinner. Taste is individual and we are free to like or not to like. However, a singer should be careful before he or she abandons the vocal genre they are born to sing within. There are few singers able to do well in different generes. I love her in Mozart and chamber music but in this piece I do not. Catalani, Mascagni, Puccini, Giordano, Leoncavallo wrote for dramatic voices, super drammatiche. Liste to Renata Tebaldi
No doubt she has a tremendously powerful voice but this aria isn't performed as consistently effortless as La Callas by any stretch, nor has it the vocal drama and insight. It's thin in places as if she's just holding it and the pronunciation of lontana is odd, not Italian. Her Chi il bel sogno di Doretta to the right is absolutely superb though.
Be very careful about saying someone is better than Callas. That's a hanging offence on this site.

@damekirilover full disagreement. Dame Kiri is magnificent but she does not do justice to this aria. Her voice is to timbre, rich and the emotion to heavy. This aria needs hight, near hysterical emotions. Dame Kiri does an amazing Mozart be she does a great La Wally. The warmth is welcome but the aria doesn't ask for it.
It does not suit her, go to Tebaldi.
