- Have you ever wondered what happened to Sonic the Hedgehog and his friends in Knothole after Eggman's defeat? Well, 25 years later, Sonic and Sally are married and are king and queen of Mobius, with kids of their own, and everyone is happy. However, due to wacky goings-on in the space-time continuum, King Sonic must risk everything to save the world as we know it! He succeeds, but at a hefty price, writing himself out of existence for a time.
The time is now. In Sonic's absence, Sally has married Shadow, making him king and causing him to rule with an iron fist. Sonic and Sally's children are no more, and Sonic finds himself completely homeless and alone. Now, it's up to him to set things right. Teaming up with his old friend Miles "Tails" Prower, and Lara-Su, daughter of Knuckles the Echidna, Sonic must stand up to King Shadow, take back the throne, and set things right! Will he succeed?

I haven’t read the archie comics that happen before this event and I’m not sure where to read them or if they exist physically, so, could somebody please explain me why shadow and knuckles are evil and sonic lost his kids?
Sonic temporarily erased himself from existence, Shadow was corrupted by power, and as you'll see in part two, Knuckles is secretly helping Sonic and Tails.

How was Tails and family protected?
There's a gadget on Tails' arm that keeps him protected. Each of his family members, as well as Lien-Da, all carry one as well.
