Such a wonderful overview of an incredible man!
Charles “Pete” Conrad was and will always remain one of a kind and and a maverick of tenacity, kindness, humor, intelligence, fun, driven, curious, and most of all an incredibly loyal friend!
Thank you for capturing the essence of this wonderful man.
I am honored to call him a personal “Friend”.
He truly was /is all that and more.
Colorful, curious, intelligent, driven and such an incredibly wonderful sense of humor!
Pete’s kindness and humbleness allowed him to live his life to the fullest, on HIS terms!
We had dinner with him not long before his passing. He called us and wanted to buy a motorcycle and learn to ride. We helped Pete out with a motorcycle, as my husband is a professional motorcycle racer. He would frequently come to the local races as a fan!
Sadly, it was not long after that we got the “Call”.
Such irony, this incredible man passed in such a mundane incident. My goodness, he is an Astronaut, a pioneer, a father, grandfather as will always be remembered as a colorful HERO!
    Thank you for posting this!
Pete will always be remembered as a true friend.

Very fine disertation. Thank you. Pete was an idol of mine. So competent, he could have fun, and still do the job, among the very best.

What irony, he bought the farm, on Harley Davidson mishap. A personel hero of mine. Thanks for this.

I love mission controls interaction with apollo 12 after the lighting strike.
MC: Try SCE to auxiliary over.
12: NCE to auxiliary? What the hell is that?
In their defense i think John Aaron was the only one who knew what it was because the flight director didn't know what it was either. I love listening to john rattle out all the warnings he had in one breath and hear him figure out the problem and give a correct way to fix that problem in 15 seconds. Steely eyed missile man for sure.

Really nice video of a nice person. One small point though and that has to do with the mention of Deke Slayton. Slayton defended many of the astronauts when the higher ups became upset about whatever. Slayton has been maligned by many non-astronauts, however, it was he who kept the press from being invasive and made an astronaut office that produced goor crew combinations. UA-cam needs videos on Slayton. His book DEKE! is a read that anyone interested in the early NASA astronauts office and it's member should read.

His book has been on my wishlist but I haven't gotten to it. I haven't seen him maligned and certainly didn't intend to do so - it's very clear that the astronauts appreciated him, and also Al Shepard (who was somewhat grouchier at times). It was good having astronauts leading the astronaut office.

At around 13:00 minutes, the statement (or rather when it happened) is inaccurate. The clip where Conrad talks about that it might have been "a small step from Neil, but a long one for me" refers to the last step on the ladder and the jump down to the foot-pad. Pete was a short man, even by that time's standards, so that was what he was referring to when he said that. He was still standing on the pad when he said it.
The actual words he spoke when he stepped off the pad was *"Oooh, is that soft and queasy!"* . Lots of people make this mistake, lol.

That's true, but it's often accepted as the words in the context of the bet.

Trivia - IIRC he was played by 2 different people in FTETTM - The actor in the Rice Hotel group was not the same as the Apollo 12 actor . The first astronaut to appear in Tom Wolfe's Right Stuff book is Pete Conrad - in a swamp looking for the unfortunate Bud Jennings.

One of the few “regular guy” astronauts. I’ve read his biography and have seen not only his interviews, but also heard other astronauts’ comments about Conrad. People always reached out to him to explain “how it felt” to walk on the moon. Conrad was never philosophical about it, unlike some other nut-jobs - Ed Mitchell and Jim Irwin to name just two. His response was always, “Yup! Lotta fun. Glad I did it.”

The real tragedy was that if he had accepted medical treatment right away he might still be alive today. He initially thought he was not injured and refused medical treatment. Some time later he began to feel ill and by that time it was too late. He had significant internal injuries. RIP Rocket Man.
