of Montreal's latest album marks a slight change in sound for the Georgia psych pop band, incorporating more arranged instrumentation for a pretty classy effect.
What do you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?

FAV TRACKS: DOUR PERCENTAGE, SPITEFUL INTERVENTION, WINTERED DEBTS, MALEFIC DOWERY
LEAST FAV TRACK: GELID ASCENT
OF MONTREAL- PARALYTIC STALKS / 2012 / POLYVINYL RECORDS / EXPERIMENTAL POP, PSYCH POP, PSYCH ROCK, BAROQUE POP, SOUND COLLAGE
7/10
Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
I'd give Paralytic Stalks a 9. It's fucking fantastic. I honestly do not understand the negative reviews it's been getting, most of them seem to be written by people who don't really like Of Montreal that much anyways.
this is their most underrated album imo
Incredible album
Funny listening to this in retrospect, since Lousy with Sylvianbriar was such a huge shift from this sound. I'd rate this album an 8, myself. I agree with your observations on this one! There is a bit of excess "noise" in the tracks. I do love Gelid Ascent, myself, though. It took some getting used to, but I really enjoy it.
@IsabellaLemar yeah, i can't get enough of dour percentage either. i've been singing it a lot lately. :-)
They were fantastic on Yo Gabba Gabba.
Brush brush brush!!
@@turtlevader to get you back on your feet!
of montreal is my favorite band
Same
@muschi2121 yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Your descriptions are making me experience expectations that might not be met! Your analogies are visual and gratifying. Grooves, sound collages, strings, and somberness? I need to listen to this.
@Multigrunger garden?
Damn, Skeletal Lamping used to be my shit back in the day. I think I'll go listen to it later on today, been a long time. I actually haven't heard the new one, but the review makes me want to check it out soon. Peace & much love for the reviews
dope review, and it's probably my favourite album of the year so far but that is most likely because I am an oM fan
@mioluce i'll look it up. :-)
@Mysticalpooper ok
@Broyale26 nice one. lol.
@jgil1966 very happy every day!
I'm glad you mentioned the other bands from Elephant 6, NMH is great, but that doesn't make Elf Power and Olivia Tremor Control inferior, like most people seem to think, not a big Apples in Stereo Fan Though...
Guys... i'm gonna say it...... I miss the tree.
Bring back the tree.
good review, skeletal lamping will always be my fave from these guys but this was still a solid record, don't really understand where some of the backlash is coming from.
I've always thought that Of Montreal sounded like Neil Sedaka on morphine trying (badly) to cover T. Rex.
@AlanRanta Haha Seconded by Alan Ranta, the man that did the amazing review for Spare Time Machine over on PopMatters. Big fan of your work, Sir.
You should review The Gay Parade, their best album IMO
seconding this! its a slept on album in their discography
Alvin Band - Rainbow Road
@jerzy862 This would be a good subject for him to make a video (not sure if he has). For me personally, I would never give a newer album a perfect 10. I think a 10 takes many years of listening and reflection (at least a decade) -- a perfect 10 has to stand the test of time and is not something to be considered lightly. On my perfect 10, we're talking Sister, Pink Flag, London Calling, Minor Threat (discography), Rid of Me, the White Album -- these are the first that come to my mind as 10s.
VIRTUAL BOY - VIRTUAL BOY. please. it comes out the 7th (Tomorrow!) released under Alpha Pup records (home to LA artists like Nosaj Thing, Daedelus, Brainfeeder.. Gaslamp Killer, Flying Lotus)
My opinion on this album is that I got my needledrop shirt today! YEAH!!
Do a review of Air Tycoon's new album "Winter Purple". Released today. It's a great instrumental album.
Saw them friday night in Athens, damn were they good! I would give the album a 7, but a 10 for the live rendition! New album is meant to be heard live.
Hey Anthony, if you have the time, could you give Brian Ennal's "Candy Cigarrettes" a review? he's a relatively small rapper, but the album has some really great moments imo. As a rapper, brian is similar to Chance, except a little more focused and a little more self loathing. I know you would like at least one song, which... for an entire album isn't saying much, but please give him a listen
4.6 IS UNREASONABLE
What's with the saxophone solos at the end lately?
LEONARD COHEN, DAMMIT.
so i guess you are not reviewing Sharon at all?
Do a review of Imperial Teen's Feel the Sound!
Review Van Halen - A Different Kind of Truth!
REVIEW WHITE FLAME ALREADY GAAAAAAAAHHHHH
How about Leonard Cohen's new one Old Ideas
f*ck yeah, Cherry Peel in the back!
good band
Review Wildernessking - Writing of Gods in the Sand
Your laughs are unnatural and I wish they could be more sincere
Review Porcelain Raft - Strange Weekend!!
I really like this album, I'd give it an 8.
Hissing Fauna is my favorite though, one of my favorites of all time.
I really wish Melon liked oM more. This is like his best review. Stalks and Lousy are what I consider Kevin’s two best albums.
strong 7 is a pretty good rating from teeth-boy
favorite album, followed very closely by hissing. the rawness is what I loved.
@candrew6 yes, that chaos was there, but it felt organized enough to enjoy. i feel like they're showing off their beatles influences a lot more again. :-)
I give this album 11 out of 10.
I love this album my two favorite songs are spiteful intervention and we will commit wold murder
@Nidhogg *shrugs* i don't think it's all that cohesive song-wise, but all the songs themselves are pretty good. i don't see why this album is receiving so much backlash when false priest and skeletal lamping are clearly less accessible.
saw of montreal wednesday in chicago and they are KILLER live.
life
I agree with your score, except I probably enjoy Gelid Ascent quite a bit more than you. I really like it. One of my favorites on the album.
@fragatahugo OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAH.
@bigblack1003 i wanna review the shlohmo ep this week, so......
love the first half but you almost have to listen to the first half to get prepared for the more fractured second half
lisa needs braces.
Anthony No
It's a 10 for me, but an 8 objectively.
@JennaughS that's a good joke. i like it.
A fair and balanced review. I'm enjoying this album a little more than you, even though a lot of critics seem to think this is a low for of Montreal. Kevin Barnes has been stuck in a bit of a rut since "Hissing Fauna..," but I agree that "Paralytic Stalks" points the way toward something a bit different and more ambitious. Sure "Exorcism Breeding Knife" may be a bit much for his casual fans, but I respect an artist that attempts to do more than churn out singles. 8/10 for me.
@muffigw comments rule. forever.
@victimeyes22 apology accepted.
@dickfagsandmotherfuc woot!
@blah22322 xoxoxoxoxo
@GrapesseparG :-D :-D
@uberamesful i didn't hate it. i just thought it was ok. i'm more partial to the band's earlier stuff, ya know? cherry peel. gay parade. that stuff. :-)
@BASSsic georgia.
Just watched this in 2020 bcuz I own the record. Bro why would u review the only 3 songs on the album i DONT listen too lol
Favorite album of 2012 so far, and probably my favorite of Montreal album in general. It took awhile for me to get used to the gear shifts in the last four tracks, but at this point, I'm digging it a LOT.
I know they're not all out yet, but you should review the Dross Glop remixes once the project is done.
@YourVertigoso i don't see what the benefit would be. could you explain in a message? i'm just not a big internet radio guy. *shrugs* :-S
@neoslasher09 i don't think my complaints were that small. a pretty decent string of tracks here feel like disjointed song pieces that wren't assembled interestingly enough. *shrugs*
@wetigaz i thought they were pretty decent. i can't imagine they'd get that way if one has been into the band's latest material, tho.
@thunderstruck560 do you false priest gave off that impression, or no? skeletal lamping?
@hands575 YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHH
@RayasNegroOvejas i gotta check out taht portico album. seems pretty good.
Also, I'm really glad you like this album. Its the best thing they've done since Hissing Fauna imo.
@VentcoreFrog i'm not sure. not really a remix reviewing guy. :-/
@TheScatterbrainsband i don't think i promised this. :-S
@StevenScott6592 so you give my laugh a strong four?
Spiteful Intervention is just an incredible song. Best song I've heard all year.
@hanslute maybe it WOULD be a good video topic.
@jarshall2 head to their site and cop one. :-)
wow im glad you reviewed this! I like of Montreal's older stuff, and after reading Pitchfork's extremely disappointed review of this album, I was considering giving it a pass. I'll definitely check it out now!
@jerzy862 maybe this should be a video topic.
@YourVertigoso what will happen if i do?
@ThisSaturatedMind i hope you like it. :-)
@djoofckell glad you dig. :-)
@TheScatterbrainsband where? when?
@Ajani186 the 70s / 80s are coming back?
@pretzelspine WZRD? is it out yet?
@ponyundercover who said that?
@Itasattc it's fixd
@uphillracer thank you, sir!
Your favorite band you've never heard of. There are definitely highs and lows, but anyone could find a song they love from their discography. Even if you love country (their beatles ish stuff).
WORST THUMBNAIL EVER.
Anybody: what's the best album 'Of Montreal' have out there? Let me know and I'll buy it. Thanks. John.
Hissing Faunq
I really like this album. The flutes and strings and whatnot really fit their aesthetic a lot better.
Easily one of their best. Can't believe Pitchfork dismissed this.
this album confuses me. It feels caked on with excess. I know thats what Kevin Barnes does, but this album just rubs me the wrong way. I prefer funky Kevin Barnes to sonically lost and confused Kevin Barnes. I figure by this point its just time to give up ever getting another album as solid to me as the gay parade was. I'll still listen to all of them, but like a confused college freshmen I think Kevin Barnes just needs to sit down and really examen what he wants to do in the future.
Sounds interesting. It sounds like all the stuff I dislike about Of Montreal is taking a back seat on this album. I always thought Hissing Fauna was gaudy and over the top.
do you have designated shirts that you wear when you shoot these videos? cause it seems as if you only have like 5 shirts that use over and over again. If so, do you not wear said designated shirts out in public in order to not be recognized? is Anthony Fantano even your real name?
(death grips is the shit though)
Ah come on dude only a few seemingly small complaints and you gave it a 7? Sigh, I had hoped you said at least 8 but I guess the fact that you don't hate my favorite band's new album is reason enough not to complain. Good review.
