Scuba Dive: Wed, May 1, 2024 - Chamber Day Dive at Isthmus Reef (West End), Catalina, CA

Wednesday, May 1, 2024 I participated in Chamber Day. This is a 1-day fund raiser for the USC Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber.
The USC Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber’s primary mission is the treatment of scuba diving casualties, and to this end the organization maintains the chamber facility and ensures crew availability 24 hours-a-day, 365 days-a-year. During the Chamber Day / Chamber Night and associated fundraising over half of the necessary funds to operate the chamber for the year are raised. As a diver participant on the May 1 boats we had the opportunity to make two dives at Catalina plus a walking tour of the Chamber facilities.
I was on the Pacific Star (PacStar) for the day, along with my dive buddy, Dan Howard. Our boat toured the chamber facilities first and then made our dives.
The first dive we made was on the Isthmus Reef (West End). The plan was to descend down the anchor to the reef. Then we dropped over the edge descending the island side wall to the bottom and then we worked our way back up the reef wall back to the boat.

Length: 500 yards
Beam (Width): 275 yards
Depth: Ranging from shallow water to over a hundred feet deep.
The reef forms a rough oblong less than 500 yards long by about 275 yards wide. The water in this area is less than 60 feet deep. There’s a mini wall along the southern edge, a gentle, rocky slope off the northern.
