Surely the No.1 gimmick that should have bombed but didn’t is The Undertaker? He’s an undead zombie, but universally regarded as the greatest character that Vince McMahon ever created
Jurassic Express - They are a kayfave 50 mio years old dinosaur, a skinny skater dude with a girls haircut and a tarzan impersonator. Yet somehow the weird lineup of random wrestlers with barely (or not at all) connecting gimmicks became a thing in early AEW and was the foundation of Luchasauruses and Jugleboys tag team championshig run.
I felt exactly the same way about Jericho during that period! He was practically challenging himself to come up with the most silly and juvenile gimmicks that would surely never get over, just to see if it was possible. But such is his genius.
Given the age of the commentators, I guess this list would focus on more recent acts. I remember Adrian Adonis as "The Adorable One" when I first started watching wrestling. Supposedly, it was a punishment by Vinnie Mac because Adonis had gained a lot of weight, but it turned Adonis into a heel heat magnet. My first wrestling show was Hogan vs Adonis in 1986.
Not necessarily a gimmick but jericho getting “ocho” over to the point fans are counting in English then saying Ocho when they get to 8 deserves some recognition.
I say that Orange Cassidy would get over either way, I personally feel that it got so much the better in part because of his "hellacious" battle with the Icon Sting.
I feel seth rollins the visionary and Breezango wasn't that bad but just needed improvement or let them do some loose promo. And for some reason, those 3 kind of look good together if seth rollins wear different weird attire every week and Breezango just come out beside seth rollins and making fun about their opponent's attire.
Wow, Goldust deserves a fair mention, as NOBODY could pull off a gimmick as bizarre as his. Props to Dustin Rhodes, as his family has proven they have taken McMahon’s Lemons and made some fine lemonade
