The 7 species of the Holy Land

The Biblical Seven Species characterize the local landscape of Israel. They were the staple food consumed by the people of Israel in their Land during Biblical times. In modern Israel - only wheat remains the staple food. Nonetheless, the seven species dominate large areas of the field, underscoring a sense of continuity between the biblical Land of Israel and the modern state.
- The olive: More than any other fruit, the olive symbolizes this continuity and Israel is full of these trees.
- The grapes: During the sweltering heat of late summer, the vines dye the field a welcome green color as their fruit begins to ripen. There are plantations of grapevines throughout the country and wine is also made from them. Wine has always been an integral part of Judaism rites, such as the kiddush blessing on Shabbat and festivals.
- Wheat: With a cold and wet winter followed by a dry spring, Israel's climate is ideal for growing wheat and that is why the country abounds in it.
- Barley: In Biblical times barley was the food of the poor - prepared as porridge or barley cakes. Today it is widely used for breakfast and dinner.
- The fig: The fig tree - with its distinctive leaves, worn as clothing by Adam and Eve - is an integral part of the Israeli landscape.
- The date: The date palm is found only in the warm valley of the cleft and there are more than 100 different species of palms and dates today.
- The pomegranate: Pomegranate trees are very common in Israeli gardens in late summer and early fall, the pomegranate is one of the most abundant fruits in Israel.
