I have been trying to figure out how to run lit circles this year and this is the most helpful video I have seen so far. I’m on spring break right now and super motivated to spend some time tailoring what you’re doing to novels and standards that are appropriate for my 7th and 8th graders. Thank you!

Great ideas and resources! This is so similar to my experiences with lit circles. Down to the pitter patter! Now I'm hyped to do it again!
I love this approach, especially if a text is mandatory to teach for a certain grade, but might not be easy for students to relate to. The contemporary texts seem to create a bridge, making the denser/older book more accessible. I had been worrying about if I got hired in a school that requires me to teach a dry or inaccessible text, but now I know that I can use this strategy!
I love literature circles with all my heart. We got to do one in college and it was so interesting to watch how unique each group was. -B

I absolutely love your shirt lol...also I really like the idea of literature circles, and I also have personal experience because when I was in 7th grade my 7th grade English teacher put us in literature circles based on our reading levels

the best book that i would highly recommend as a teaching tool is a book called the innocent man: murder and injustice in a small town . this is a real criminal case and i just think this makes a interesting teaching tool for english class . this book is non fiction as well just a suggestion.

Hi, very interested in trying this out with my freshmen and TKAM - what choice novels did you choose? Also, just logistically, was the reading done for homework?
Do you have your students read their choice book all in class or is it homework? I am a fairly new teacher and am trying to figure out how to do this when my school frowns upon homework and even if I did assign it, maybe 20% of each class would do it and be prepared. How can you have tine to read enough of LOTR for kids to understand the while story while also asking them to read anither book? If it is all in class, it sounds like a lot if reading. I'll take any tips! I absolutely love this idea. Thank you so much!
Awesome video! I have some questions:
1. What if you get students who’ve chosen a book they’ve already read?
2. What if a student chooses a novel that you know will be too easy/too hard for them?
3. What if most of the students in the class choose the same novel (Hunger Games)?

I have a question teacher. As a adult I literally have other adults that say strange things. With vocabulary words as if they can make it up as the go long in life.

The word list.
Is list plural more than one on a list? Can it be also singular?
Example: Make a list of food, or name's, songs ect.....
If you put down 1 thing does it still makes it a list?
When teacher's say to students class your assignment is make a list of (anything in the subject you choose) we will review it tomorrow.
Some or one student's only write one on the list & reads it out loud.
Teacher says you only wrote one thing?
That's not a list.
Student say one thing can be called a list it's something not nothing and this is my list.
Teacher says list means more than one.
Student says list can mean one or more my list is one and it's still considered a list.
Is that right? I thought the word list is plural. I'm confused.

Would you accept a assignment like that?
A list is singular but consists of more than one thing. Kind of like saying a car is one object, which is true, but that one car has a list of items it needs to have in order for it to be a car. So, it is just 1 list, but has more than one thing in it. That's how I'd put it.
