You know Howard isn't the greatest guy in the world, but he is being held hostage by Chuck. Like Jimmy said, Chuck could threaten to quit at any time, and it would sink HHM if he did. At any rate, it was a helluva stab in the heart to Jimmy. He was really trying to not be Slippin' Jimmy anymore, and he was doing good work and is a smart guy. Now Chuck may have just sabotaged all that emotional development.
The amazing thing is, is that Chuck is right about Jimmy here. But what he isn't saying is the fact that he is one of many reasons why Jimmy ends up the way he does. Also, this looked like it would be a turning point for Jimmy after finally gaining the respect, support, and love from his brother. Instead it was betrayal, knocking him back to square one. As you watch this show go on, you see all the factors that led to him becoming a criminal. Of course, at the end of the day it is clearly his choice to "break bad", he gets as much blame as the people who surrounded him. The side story with Mike, who also goes through changes and decides to become a criminal, is a great parallel. It is fascinating, exciting, and funny to watch this downward spiral between both men, but it's also kind of heartbreaking. That's the beauty of this show.
The guy Mike knocked out was played by Steven Ogg who did the voice for Trevor Philips in GTA5, and played a live action version of the character in some videos.
You may or may not remember, the big guy with the beard in the parking lot scene who ran away from Mike was also in El Camino. He was the security guard for the escorts.
I thought I recognised him while watching El Camino! It was driving me mad thinking of all the BB characters and not putting my finger on it. Turns out I was thinking of the wrong show!
I mean I get what Chuck is saying. He's worked his entire life to get where he is and the law is sacred for him. He doesn't trust Jimmy has changed from Slipping Jimmy, but...you can't do that to your own brother. It's not cool. And Jimmy really tried to change and worked hard on this. It's pretty sad.
It's also not his place. Chuck doesn't get to decide who is or isn't a lawyer - there's a system in place for anyone who wants to earn a place in the Bar association, and anyone who works hard enough to meet said criteria gets to become a lawyer - regardless of what elitist assholes like Chuck think. If Jimmy is unfit to be a lawyer, then there is a process called disbarment, and it'll happen to Jimmy if he slips up. Chuck, taking it upon himself to decide who is or isn't worthy of being a lawyer, has no right to claim to hold the law sacred, because it is the law that has allowed Jimmy to become a lawyer.
i feel so validated seeing you two getting so angry at chuck on jimmy's behalf. jimmy is obviously not a perfect person, but i am very fond of him and i am glad that you are too. chuck says people don't change, but it's like chuck is intentionally sabotaging him so that he doesn't BECOME a better person.
Reposting this from a comment I wrote under another reactors channel: In my opinion, this is one of the best episodes of the show. Definitely the best of the season. My favourite part is the last scene, because it solidifies Chuck as one of the best characters on the show: 1. Michael McKean is an amazing actor. The way he portrays his mental illness is amazing. There are those tiny expressions on his face or some tiny gestures that always let us know how uncomfortable he feels around electricity. Most of us never experienced anything similar to that, but you really understand how Chuck feels. Even if Chuck puts up a brave face and claims that all the electricity is not that big of a deal, the audience understands how he really feels. And the way he delivers that final monologue of the episode is amazing. He tries to hold back in the beginning, but once he mananged to say those words: "You're not a real lawyer." The emotions just come out of him. And it doesn't just sound like the confession of an evil villain. Chuck genuinely sounds desperate and hurt. 2. I totally understand why someone would hate Chuck. Let's be honest. This is not how you should treat your brother. The worst thing he did is how he completely ignores every improvement Jimmy has had over the last few years. We have seen Jimmy as a (mostly) honest man. Season 1 did a good job at showing us how different Jimmy is from Saul. How he refused to take over a million dollars from the Kettlemans on two occassions just because it's "the right thing". And how he actually cares about his elderly clients. But Chuck disregards this. He only sees Jimmy as Slippin' Jimmy and refuses to acknowledge that he has changed. But try to see it from Chucks perspective. Do you have that one relative who has on multiple occassions shown that he is unable to take any responsibillity? Someone who takes shortcuts whenever possible? Who is somehow always handed everything he wants? Now admit that you don't like this guy. And now imagine that this guy has the power and the responsibillity of a lawyer. Even if that guy claims that he is now a better man, wouldn't you be sceptical? Wouldn't you think that he would eventually screw up and cause some massive damage? And if you had the power to limit that damage, wouldn't you use it? We've only seen the story from Jimmys point of view and that's why we hate Chuck. But I do understand why Chuck did what he did. I may not have done the same thing if I were in his place. I actually strongly believe that he made the wrong choice. But I do think, that Chuck is more than a guy of pure evil, even if it may look like it. I do not like Chuck as a person, but I love him as a character. 3. On a sidenote: If you are looking for a way to represent mentally ill people in media, I think this is the way to do it. Chuck is not just part of a minority to have a more inclusive story. His mental illness directly affects the plot in numerous ways. But episodes like this one show us that he is so much more than his mental illness. In the entire section I wrote above, I did not even mention his illness. That's because he has a lot of depth as a character that goes beyond his illness. His illness just adds more depth to the relationship between Jimmy and Chuck. And even though his illness limts him, he is very capable on his own. I think this episode demonstrated this sufficiently. And thanks to Michael McKeans acting we actually get to understand someone who is so different from us.
You guys are much more observant than I am, I had no idea Chuck was going to drop that bomb on Jimmy, so their scene together at the end was like an absolute punch in the gut (and maybe it is even if you know what's coming!). For some reason I really believed Chuck was proud of Jimmy, even if he had misgivings about him here and there. But Chuck going on his rant was like his mask suddenly fell off, and it was shocking. Anyway, I love the character-based drama of BCS (mixed with the amazing Mike moments!) - I think I might like it more than Breaking Bad at times! Thank you so much for your fabulous reactions!
I really loved the expressions on your faces throughout this episode. There are a lot people who say BCS is boring and slow but you two get it. Jimmys heartbreak was really mirrored in your spontaneous reaction. If you feel that deep now for the characters you will really really love all of what is about to unfold. Sometimes a conversation between two characters can just be as dramatic and intense as blowing up a methlab. And BCS excells at this. To make a longs story short : I think this show is a perfect fit for you two and i am very glad about this.
You might be giving Jimmy too much credit. He’s done a lot of illegal, or at the very least shady things since the start of the show such as hiring those two brothers to scam the Kettlemans, take the stolen money from the Kettlemans, and spill coffee on the cop to steal his notes about Mike. People can change, but Jimmy has not proven that he can change his slippin’ Jimmy ways.
To be fair, he was trying, whether that means much or not. However, pretty much everyone from the Kettlemans, Nacho, Mike, and even Chuck dismissed him as a crooked lawyer. Not saying his actions weren't his own responsibility or helped his image, but still.
Shows you how great of an actor Michael Mckean actually is. He's playing a character that's lying, and he's convincingly lying, and believable doing it. I don't think I explained that right, but I think most of you reading this will understand what I mean. He's always been one of my favorite COMEDIC actors, but he went to a completely different level with this show.

One thing I love about Breaking Bad is the nuanced way in which it constructs it's characters. All of them feel real because none of them are perfect. But I think this show is arguably even better when it comes to that. The stakes are not as high in this show, there aren't people dying left and right, and one would think that implies less intensity and tension here. But the writers of the show manage to mantain a high level of tension as you can tell by the last scene of this episode, and they even use the fact that stakes are lower (in the main storyline at least) as a way to build even more nuanced characters. They take more time here to show those nuances in very subtle ways, and it pays off. In this show is even more difficult to tell who is, ultimately, morally right (if someone actually is) in most of the conflicts. You can understand the motivations of every character and at the same time they rarely feel completely justififed.
