Well, Twilight did lift and freeze multiple ponies before in the McColts episode and in the Castle-Mania one, so she may have been able to catch them and possibly slow their fall. The underwater thing was less likely, but still possible, I think as in her practice duel with Starlight, didn't one part suddenly teleport them underwater?
