Funnily enough, I decided to read the book series after seeing this game come out on Kickstarter. Wasn't compelled to back the game, but the book series turned out to be amazing. Highly recommend Brandon Sanderson; he's a fantastic author.
Yeah, three of my regular group read him, although only one has read the Steelheart books to date. Apparently, he writes a lot of books :) Dan gave me the 10 minute "story summary" of the Steelheart series as background for the vid. I rarely read fiction you see.
What can i say, i'm a sucker for a dice management co-op with a fun theme and a great decision space. This was one of those games that flew a bit under the radar initially for me, until i saw it one day and went "yep, that'll be one i want". And as mentioned in the video, getting rid of individual player turns was a great idea. Still, i suspect this would be a nightmare for groups who don't have good social contracts around co-ops.
I don’t know how I missed this release but I didn’t hear about it until the 3 Minute BG list of games using the Yahtzee mechanic. This is Elder Signs (but completely co-op) meets Pandemic with Capes. It should be on everyone’s list. I’m off to get mine! Thanks! 😎🤙
It's kinda different in the books, here it seems like the epics are rampaging through a city while in the books steelheart ruled the city and it were the Reckoners that plotted against him and then fought him in direct combat
When you play you still get the feeling hes the boss of the city. When he moves he leaves behind the cops and barricades and they make his area bosses tougher
I genuinely would have never considered this game at all before this review and it checks a LOT of my boxes. Thanks as always for the great overview and hope y'all are staying safe and well.
Would you recommend this game for two players exclusively? Me and my girlfriend dont have any friends who play boardgames, but we've been looking for a new co-op game. The flavor and style seems like itd be right up our alley, but some games just play better w bigger groups.
Steph and I have played it 2 player and it works well. You could also consider playing it with 2 characters each as well once you get familiar with it, which would be a slightly more complex and involved game mode.
3 Minute Board Games i dont know why i always forget about the concept of us playing 2 characters each. Our first love when it came to board games was arkham horror. When we watched your video on that game and how you would play multiple characters at once it was as if we were opened up to a whole new world of possibilities. Thank you much!
@@yerwolnahtan It's also great because each of you get a chance to play really different styles, like a gate-smashing magic user AND a shooty-bang-bang street sweeper all at once!
Fair enough. The thing that put it over the top for me is that the turn order and actions of the players are totally up to the players instead of the normal "you go, i go" thing. This makes the co-op play really interesting and leads to cool chaining of moves and interactions.
No plans to in the immediate future, due to the lockdown and the world, im mostly going through old games I know really well as playing new ones is difficult atm
Pretty interested in it. We're big fans of co-ops that let you really interact and well... cooperate?... with each other more than usual. Read the books and enjoyed them more than I thought I would too.
I think removing player turns and having everyone be able to spend their dice cooperatively is what elevates the game for me. Its probably the most co-opy co-op out there
I think im dumb but didn't understand well the thematic representation of the game mechanics. Is it about superheroes but with a dark twist? Also Is the book highly recommended to understand it?
I've not read the books and it still worked for me. The premise is superpowers emerged, but they seem to drive everyone with them vain, ego maniacal and awful, every single super is a nasty piece of work. You are the normal folk, working to research their weaknesses and remove them.
I love you baby. I love the way that you walk.. Sorry, don't know where that came from. Just before the pandemic I bought this game and the trilogy of books based upon multiple recommendations. I finished the first book in a week and love the world Sanderson has built and just punched out this game last night to start learning this weekend! I'm so excited to play this and happy to hear you enjoy it too!
Thank you for the great, concise review as always. May I ask how much is this game supposed to cost? It is currently 170 UK POUNDS on Amazon which seems to be a complete rip off.
That is a ripoff price. At the kickstarter it was $69US for the normal game, $99 for the fancy one. I used the normal one in the video. Here is their shop link. Not sure if that helps with you in the UK. www.nauvoogames.com/shop
3 Minute Board Games Thats great man thanks for the reply. Keep up the excellent work! There is a thriving gaming community here in Ireland and we all really enjoy your channel

The stormlight archives are literally epic.

It's been said, over, and over... But dang...the components... Those trays make it so cool.
Own and read the books, have the game. Love it, the books and game.
Excellent video as always, cheers!
Absolutely phenomenal game. I didn't expect to like a dice game so much! "And did you get that thing I sent you? That... thing?"
Which thing?
Love the Birdman reference 😁 Honestly though, Steelheart would be doomed if he fought, PRINCE OF SPACE!
Heh, cheers. I have a great fondness for that show.
Naw, I never call for Birdman. My go to hero is Space Ghost. Guys a genius.
One of the best interviewers IN SPACE! Am right?
3 Minute Board Games Damm straight

Cheers Jim, and safe and well, hope you are too. Yeah, as for the game, i feel it flew under a lot of radars.
Great overview of the game, I will add it can be played pretty well even with 6 players.
Nice, most we did was 5 and it was solid fun

Can you play Combo fighter? It was on Kickstarter a year ago and it is kinda hard to find a copy but I think it is a fantastic game.

So it’s Pandemic with Capes? Awesome!!
