T.K. Ramamurthy has used the Valaji scale beautifully and embellished it with a bit of the shatsruti rishabha (in ‘Kurai Theerumo’) to give the song sung by P. Susheela an exotic flavour. The phrase ‘Varumo’ floats at the nishada with the appropriate gamaka.

You may say like that. But the music directors taking another seats, other than the original swaras, in such cases we cannot say valaji, etc. No purity at all. When originally a raag is in upaangam, we cannot convert it as bhashaangam. To give a different melody they are doing this. Can we do it in concerts? Not at all.
@@sivasubramanian3082 What u r saying is true. I am not a classical music expert. I dont understand the musical jargons ( upaangam, Valaji etc.,) . But I can enjoy a good melody and identify the melody parts and sangathis which add that extra to the songs. ( whether it is vocal or instrumental). Classical music whether carnatic or hindustani or western has limited number of audience as they are mostly not created to attract people called common public( only limited set of audience who should have some background knowledge ). But film music needs to be melodious to attract most audience as they are commercial and situation based depending on the story line. Many times It is said " this song is based on this raga" in wikipedia ( under movie review)but from young age I always had a doubt that whether MDs really try to compose a film song on particular ragam. Since nowadays there are plenty of interviews with MDs and Lyricists ,many people confirmed that for MD , the tune should be melodious to hear and for that they may break any rules and all songs are ragamalikas.

Suratha wrote this lyric excellently, Ilyaraja appreciated it, some times this song mix-up in my mind with vasantha kala kolangal from the film Thiyagam. Persons having better music knowledge may explain, is there any similarity beyond few words appeared in both lyrics.
