Man, they were really hammering in how the _Spells_ are what makes a wizard what they are.
I really thought we were going to get more examples of spells, or at very least spell rules, because there really wasn't much change to the base wizard class to talk about.
Especially when he talked about the Abjurer, that would have been a perfect time to discuss any potential changes to counterspell, or given their Spell Breaker feature, about how Bonus Action spells will be treated in the rules now.

    • @feltrix334
      @feltrix334 3 місяці тому +3

They probably didn't talk about Counterspell because it's (probably) nerfed. If they are, in fact, letting you cast two leveled spells in a turn, this definitely would have been the time to break that out. Perhaps you can't cast the bonus action Dispel Magic if you've cast a leveled spell this turn?

Illusory Reality has always sounded really fun but its a level 14 feature so I can't expect to play with it for most campaigns, which sucks because it basically turns your Wizard into a Green Lantern or Wile E. Coyote depending on how you play.

Some calculation for 3 different "tank" subclasses of casters:
    At level 3:
Abjurer wizard: 9 extra hp/long rest or 29 if you waste all resources on abjuration spells. No other defensive features.
Moon druid: 36 extra hp/long rest. No ability to add more, also gives AC bonus.
Fiend warlock: 6-144 extra hp/long rest. (depending on encounters)
    At level 6:
Abjurer wizard: 16 extra hp/long rest or 60 if you waste all resources on abjuration spells. No other defensive features.
Moon druid: 90 extra hp/long rest. Or 270 if you burn slots, also gives AC bonus.
Fiend warlock: 10-240 extra hp/long rest. Give bonus to saves.
    At level 10:
Abjurer wizard: 25 extra hp/long rest or 107 if you waste all resources on abjuration spells. No other defensive features.
Moon druid: 180 extra hp/long rest. Or 630 if you burn slots, also gives AC bonus.
Fiend warlock: 15-360 extra hp/long rest. Give bonus to saves. And give damage resistance of your choice.
I also can add twilight domain cleric and clockwork sorcerers stats here, when they reveal cleric and sorcerer next week, but we all know how they will look like.

The real question, of course, is will the 2024 PHB have spells of every spell school of every level? Obviously it's more important they have them for abjuration, divination, evocation, and illusion, but presumably future wizard subclass redos will give similar features for other schools.

I really wished Wizard had taken a page from the Land Druids' eight lands & gave Wizards a "Specialist" subclass to encompass all eight schools, with the generalist Savant, then a specialist branch at 10th & 14th level. That way they can divert resources to making unique Wizard subclasses like Scribes & War.

You can basically put each round a barrel over yourself to block line of sight. That can make quite some spells and tactics null and void.

I'm currently playing an illusionist in a campaign (2014 version). I just got to level 5, and we've had plenty of weeks where people work, so we may be there for a while (we've also got a planned break to do a one shot after our current quest). If the new handbook is out before I hit level 6, I'm going to show the changes to my DM and hope he lets me swap the lv 6 feature (if not use the whole subclass change). I'll also show him the glossary for illusions, since it feels like the few times I cast them, they barely accomplish anything. That may be partially because we've yet to encounter guards/etc. to give good opportunities for illusions to solve the problem, but I also think the DM just has some trouble buying into them in general. All our battles have been in large open rooms with little to no obstructions, so I can't even use the environment to my advantage with illusions.
And the fighting illusions will be a big help for me in battle. One of the other players clearly wants me to take fireball, but I told him I'll need to set up an in world reason first, since it doesn't fit my vibe. I was recently contemplating asking the DM if I could re-skin it as psychic damage to have is be illusory, but I assume that's going to require hefty nerfs for balance, since that damage type is stronger than just swapping fire for cold or lightning. But depending on the new modify feature, I might be able to apply that to various spells to keep my vibe (assuming the DM let's me incorporate all of that into the 2014 version).

So minor illusion to make a cloud of opaque smoke around the target, and then a ranged attack cantrip with advantage since the target can no longer see you and you can see through your own illusions. Seems like a nice low-level buff.

So I'm a tad concerned about the limit of changing one spell per rest to the wizard, mostly in that it looks like both the clerics and sorcerers (and maybe others) will all have more memorized spells based on subclass than the wizard(unless the number of memed spells in the wizard chart is higher). I've been in too many games where the wizard either does not have access or does not have gold to actually learn many more spells than other casters, as well as games where you just don't ever have a good enough idea of what you'll be dealing with to actually tailor your spell list beyond the greatest hits, it's part of why I loved the element changing subclass feature for scribes so much, I only had to actually memorize a couple of damage spells and could just swap out types based on what I was dealing with.

Expert divination was really hamstrung by the lack of divination spell options, so I hope they filled out the divination spell list a bit more. I'm quite hopeful because I've been pleasantly surprised by how many times feedback I gave during the playtest was addressed in later playtests and the final product. My feedback for illusionist was about how the 1st and 6th level features didn't have any mechanical weight because their effects are all up to the DM's idea of how illusion spells work, and I'm excited to see that now we have both clear mechanical benefits at those levels as well as guidance on illusion spells themselves.

All these major revisions to subclasses like Illusionist, Fae, Beserker, GOO, etc. makes me hopeful Draconic Sorcerer will get the proper rework it deserves rather than some minor quality of life changes that does not really help it compete with the other sorcerer subclasses. But it being a sorcerer subclasses also makes me think that is not the case since WotC seems to have something major against the class.

Shadow Conjuration goes back to 1e. There was also Shadow Magic that let you cast a fireball that did a fraction of the damage if the target recognized it was an illusion. (Of course the 1e illusionist took such a back seat to the magic-user that they had a 7th level spell called “first level magic-user spells.”

    Wish list:
    * Scholar includes the Order of Scribe magic quill.
    * Modify Spell is kept, let it work when you Memorize Spell, or by spending a minute to modify a spell you have prepared if its lvl 6 or lower.
    * Create Spell is kept from the earlier playtest, but emphasize it has to be a Wizard spell you've used Modify Spell on, and that it increases the new spell level by 2 by default, but the DM is free to add or remove additional costs, also to veto the spell, allow creation of entirely new spells if allowed, AND decide if the Modifications actually require the spell level to be changed, or if it should be less or more then then a flat +2. Baseline its just "Hey, make Modify Spell permanent with a new spell, but at +2 spell level. But if your DM is up to it, you could create brand new spells, or other modifiers!" At a steep gold price of course.

      Secondary wish list:
      * Bladesinger, improved with limited Weapon Mastery access.
      * Enchanter, improved to actually use Modify Memory, the spell in some way on that 14th lvl feature.
      * Necromancer, Undead Thralls also affecting Danse Macabre like it does Animate Dead, and Inured to Undeath specifying that your max HP can't be reduced by anything EXCEPT your own spells. To close some 'fun' spell loops.
      * Theurgist? I dunno, think it'd be fun to add, maybe to conflict with a Nethermancer/Diabolist/Demonologist Wizard? Just different from the original UA!
      * Transmuter, oh gods, this needs so much... let it be better at using Alchemist Tools, like a sedo-Artificer, and make its 10th level Shapechanger be clarified to keep your Int, Wis, and Cha scores while polymorphed.
I've admittedly done a LOT of homebrew on these subjects. >_> Started when I tried to combine all the playtests, then fill out what they were missing while trying to keep the same style of change.

Don't get me wrong, I'm definitely happy about the subclasses we're getting here. I love just about every change they've mentioned. It does kind of stink that we're losing 4 subclasses, though. Not too bummed about Transmutation, but Conjuration, Enchantment, and especially Necromancy will be missed (without circle of spores, either).
Might just have to do some homebrewing after I get my PHB... or just use the old versions with the new savant feature. We'll have to see what the "backwards compatibility" rules look like.

I really hope the illusion glossary and stuff comes with more dm guidance. I literally can't expect illusion spells to do anything at all with my current dm. If they see it appear, they auto pass, if they see you casting, auto pass, if they encounter it without either of the prior, they will stop and spend multiple turns making checks until they pass. If it is moving but doesn't make sound they auto pass, if it is audio but they don't see it auto pass. If it is cast behind them from being hidden, auto pass because they have 360 degree vision or head it being cast. Casting hallucinatory terrain 8 hours ride away from the enemy chasing you? Too bad the terrain is completely flat and they can see you casting it however many miles away. Oh, and minor illusion with illusion savant can only be edited every turn, so it can't replicate a creature even if that creature is small or under 5 ft because it moves and makes sounds in stop-motion. Not super mad on that ruling as it does say object and not creature, but major illusion being the only option that sometimes even buys time in any combat or pre combat situation sucks and makes the subclass useless until level 6.

A really fast homebrew fix if you wanna keep the theme and fantasy of it more intact is that they always have the illusion trait or at the very least describe them as illusions. With a full casting having more HP due to more casting power being put into it.

I could see warlocks taking an evoker dip for their eldritch blast, because garanteed hitting is nice if you can add a bunch of effects as well. Eldritch knights be like hhmm let me go take a 4 lvl detour for some funsy's, let alone if they get their hands on illusionist bracers.

  • @Marb315

I really like the new version of the savant spells, for especially loaded spell levels like 3rd and 4th it means that you won't be a divination wizard who feels out of luck because what wizard in their right mind would take clairvoyance or tongues at level 5 when fireball, counterspell, dispel magic, hypnotic pattern, fear, and fly all become available at the same time.
One question I have about the evoker is if potent cantrip would apply to booming blade, green flame blade, and (assuming it's the same as or similar to the playtest) true strike? because if it does a 3 level dip into evoker for an eldritch knight seems like it would be a very worthwhile endeavor, the cantrips which will be doing way more damage than they would with a wizard because you'll be using magic weapons and which will be used commonly even through much higher levels feels like a much better version of the graze mastery because you'll just be getting way more damage out of it

For the illusionary Self option in the UA, there seems to be the implication that it should be on par with 2nd level spell, but the feature seems like it might usually be worse than the 2014 version of 1st level shield spell which could save you from multiple attacks... pity that so far they have not talked about general spell changes, to let us know whether the 1st level Shield spell will typically be better than this "pseudo 2nd level spell" Illusionist feature...

14:05 Here's the question, though... Are the spells listed by school anywhere? Because currently, all spells are listed in the class spell lists alphabetically with no further information. So if your wizard Abjurer turns level 7, and gets to add a new level 4 Abjuration spell, you have to read each and every 4th level wizard spell to find out which ones are abjuration school.

In the write up on DndBeyond, it says "If you don’t see a feature covered, such as Signature Spells, that means it is unchanged from the 2014 Wizard, or only saw very minor changes."
If a feature was removed or replaced, they would have addressed it. Since malleable illusions wasn't mentioned, that means the feature is still there and Phantasmal Creatures was just an additional feature at level 6
