People have done amazing things with them. It may be small but I’m planning to have the scandi / french country / slightly boho style home that I want, without borrowing money. :) That means a lot of secondhand materials because I can’t afford new. It’s so great to see what Farmhouse on Boone family have achieved living within their means.

My father always said if you cant pay cash for it , then you shouldn’t buy it ... you cant afford it . STAY DEBT FREE as you ALWAYS end up paying more for something than if you waited until you can pay for it . You lose in the long run.

Wonderful video and advice! I used to live in one of the most expensive cities in the US: Seattle. I became debt free while living there and raising 3 kids as a single mom. If I can do it, ANYONE can. I was 30k in debt after my divorce, and he wasn't paying child support (never did). I made it my goal: if I can't pay cash, I don't get it. I managed to become debt free, get my health and dental health in order and completely paid off, and save money besides. I now live in Europe (remarried) and though we haven't bought a house here, we are living minimally in a tiny apartment so we can save for a house. We never buy new cars (even if we had the extra money, I wouldn't - they lose value the minute you drive them off a new car lot!). We lived for 3 years without a car because we could easily rely on public transit in the city we live. When you keep the mindset to pay cash for everything, then life makes things happen that you couldn't have planned. It's a type of grace. So I don't buy people's excuses. It is possible, no matter where you live.

  • @NicolesNaturals

If a mom wants to stay at home with her children, it is imperative to buy a house based on the price of the husband's salary ALONE. I was working when my husband and I first got married and even when I was pregnant, but then I quit to be at home with my kids. We always based our budget on only his salary because we knew we'd be losing my salary at some point. I think people today are really spoiled. They want super-expensive cars, houses, clothes and other "toys." Everything should be planned out in life. I have drilled that into my kids from the start. You will really avoid problems down the line.

    • @FarmhouseonBoone

Very good advice. I see too many women who want to stay home, but because of the amount of debt they took on pre-kids, they just can't.

Yes! I only worked about 5 months after we married, but since we figured everything based on one income all except a small amount set aside in checking to pay the expenses caused by me working my income went straight into a savings account (I was driving and hour each way to work so that gas and some lunches out with co-workers were paid from my salary). We started marriage with only a house mortgage.

    • @christineshah7330
      @christineshah7330 2 роки тому +2

Absolutely. We have always lived more simply than our friends and family and it enabled us to make the choices that are right for us. I could stay home, one of our boys had autism so that made staying home even more beneficial, and we eventually started our own business totally debt free and could only do that because we didn't have house, car or credit payments. Our things aren't as nice or new as some of our friends things, but I don't actually mind that....which sometimes surprises me. LOL I love nice things and pretty things, but I wouldn't trade the time with my boys and husband for those things and that is how it works. To get them we would have had to both work. My son with autism recently died unexpectedly in his sleep and I am overwhelmed with gratitude that my husband and I had so much time with him. Our lifestyle choices meant we were at everything he did, we spent a ton of time with him, we were super involved at school with him, and had ongoing hobbies and interests we shared with him...all instead of working more to have money for things. It is all so extremely clear in retrospect.

I just wanted to pick up the phone and call you after listening to this video. It was excellent. My husband and I live in Hawaii, one of the most expensive places on the globe and yet we are debt-free because we choose to rent an 800 ft.² cottage, we wash our own dishes, we have two older vehicles, but have a handsome savings account and owe no one, and it’s because we choose to live within our means. I completely agree with you that nothing is worth having if you have the burden of owing someone else. Americans are often just too spoiled and do not know how to say no to the things they want. Anyway, you & your husband have made some wise choices and I’m so happy for the way God has blessed your family.

It is absolutely not by luck that you are where you are. It’s because of your discipline and hard work, and God blesses that. My husband and I got married with no student loans, and still managed to dig ourselves into a debt hole after marriage. Thankfully we discovered Dave Ramsey and are now debt free except our mortgage at age 24, and hopefully will be where you are in 10 years. But the point I am trying to make is that you and your husband are where you are because you honored God with your finances and made good, responsible choices!! Well done!! I totally agree with the no debt mind set, I myself also have this rule, as I was growing up in hard times in the seventies and my dad's advice was don't do debt, in the case of a mortgage pay it down as fast as possible, which I have done with my husband. We also did a lot of do it yourself repairs and improvements on the house. Now in my sixties I am grateful to have no debt and have a healthy savings and investments. Although we have a lot of medical expenses as my husband is terminally ill, my priorities are to keep the savings topped up for this.

We have not been able to buy a house even thought we have a good amount saved and both work full time jobs(not min wage). Houses where we live are 500K for. a decent one or 350k for a beat up one which is about what we can afford. We lived in SoCal in an 1100sqft house we bought in 2011 for 70K. It was a total fixer upper (but livable since we had a VA loan and the standards are pretty strict) and my husband had to commute to LA everyday but it was totally worth it and it’s completely possible to find a house that isn’t ridiculously priced they just may need work and you might have to commute. We moved to the South and sold the house for 170K last year which is still lower than many areas in SoCal.

My husband and I have done the same. We save and buy with cash, including our homes. We married later- I was 28 and he was 32. And, no- we were never previously married. It just took us a long time to find each other. 😉 Our personal thoughts, for ourselves, is that God gives us what He believes is enough and we respect that. We don't have the newest trends and don't update to keep up with the times. Our goal is function, clean, health and comfort. There is much peace when there is no financial stress. I know we have been blessed and I don't take that for granted. But, we have also worked hard. I completely understand why you come across as apologizing. I never tell people our choice to live debt free, but if a friend might make a comment and say something about our mortgage- I am honest and say we don't have one. I have had a friend get very angry at me and say It isn't fair I don't have bills like they do. I nicely reminded her that I also don't have the nice things that they have the bills for- that it is everyone's personal choice and neither one is wrong.

I am not totally debt free, all of the time, but I do owe very little and pay my bills off almost every month. I'm older and retired so I do treat myself on occasion but we are in great shape. We paid cash for a land and cruise trip in Alaska, last year and travel without debt as often as we like. I do encourage young people to follow the debt free teaching. Both of my sons have only a morgage and their cars are paid for so I'm pleased that they are on the right path. What I didn't realize was that my new husband believed that if you needed extra money, you borrow it - after having kids we ended up going deep in debt and still buying a house. Going into marriage debt free didn't mean we lived debt free. We spent money badly. THat is why we were in debt. Kudos to you. YOU are doing it right so please don't apologize. Tracking every penny and cutting things I didn’t need. I wanted to continue to stay home with my three children so I opened a home daycare. Every penny I made went on the debt. Please don’t let anybody make you feel bad about coming into marriage with no debt. People like to poke holes into other’s stories to make them feel better about their own situations. Congrats! This doesn’t happen by accident or “luck”.

Student loans are a Choice people make. They need to take responsibility for that. I got my R.N. Degree thru a 2 year community college program when I was 30 years old. You don’t have to get a 4 year degree if you don’t want debt. It’s a choice! I drive a 21 year old car even though I can afford to pay cash for a new one. I sold resale items on eBay to help us pay off our 30 year mortgage in 10 years. We live modestly. It’s a choice. Young folks need to learn they can’t have it all. You are so wise! You deserve your success-it wasn’t handed to you. Blessings.

We love the Biblical principles Dave Ramsey teaches and we also live by them as much as is possible. It is so great that you two figured this out, adopted these guidelines of living within your means and not having to have immediate gratification so early in your lives. Thank you very much for sharing this with others. It saves so much stress and heartache to use this financial philosophy. Praying blessings continue for you and your sweet family.

Don't let those people make you feel bad or guilty because they are justifying their spending habits. We got married without any debt too and we still ended up with a ton. Things happen and everyone spends differently. Debt is debt, doesn't matter where it comes from.

Living within your means was never taught us. We just paid off my husband’s student loans because a dear relative left an education trust to us. We both had student and credit debt when we got married. Our first home we had a nasty surprise and needed a new roof ASAP, it was leaking on top our fireplace, our bathroom and our bed. So we also have an HELOC as well.
Now- we can’t even afford to rent an apartment. We were willing to sell if it was better. We live in an area where renting is more expensive.
We are determined to get debt free. A friend turned us to Dave Ramsey as well. We are SUPER tight (sometime we literally barely can buy food, others we only have 29 cents to pay towards debt), but so far only Mortgage and HELOC left! Soooo exciting. It feels so liberating to get it gone. I never realized how STRESSFUL it felt to be in debt. It worried me so much more than I realized it till some of it was gone.
Congratulations you guys! Keep it up! And let’s continue to encourage our friends and family to strive for debt freedom!

I am so glad to see this video. I am currently taking Financial Peace University because I wanted to learn what he had to say about insurance, investing and giving. My husband and I were pretty much of the same mindset When we married he had a small amount of debt and a small car loan. We weren’t making that much but we knocked out the CC debt in a couple of months then made double car payments and knocked out the car loan about 6 months later We built a good, basic 1400 sq foot house and moved in a few months before our first child was born. Since then we have raised three sons, sent them to college, bought several homes and are currently raising two of our grandchildren. We have no debt, no car payments, no mortgage and are those every day millionaires I am so proud of you and your husband Debt makes you a slave

Thank you for sharing. When my husband and I got married, 20 years ago, we had student loans, car loans, and absolutely nothing. We are now almost out of debt, including paying off our small, humble home. It's taken a lot of work and sacrifice though. Especially because I have been home with my kids full-time, then part-time for many years now. We hand wash dishes, drive older vehicles, and do not go on a lot of vacations (my kids hate travelling so that is mostly why) But living this way is worth it , I do not regret it at all. =)

You are absolutely right, prioritizing expenditures is vital. Yes, if you need a new roof, or gutters or broken windows, these must be replaced immediately for safety and security. But having an outdated kitchen, no doors on cupboards, flaking paper and paint (as long as not a danger to children) is not the end of the world.
Having the latest phones, the latest games and game machines, eating out every week, new cars every 3 years, vacations on ships or in lavish hotels are not a necessity.
Well done! You both should be very proud of what you have achieved at such a young age, but also being cognizant that not everyone has the same opportunities.

By no means is my family anywhere close to having our house paid off but I am seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. We are so close to having all medical bills paid off from having our children and also due to having to have a couple extra surgeries after giving birth due to complications. Also our credit card debt is almost gone too. I can’t wait. It’s such a freeing feeling. Thanks for the motivation.

So refreshing! Young people today (high school/college age) should be TAUGHT these principles! As for a new car....I would advise you never buy one. Buy a newer used car...but never new. They depreciate the minute you drive it off the lot. My dad sold cars for 35 years...and that would be his advice (if he were here to give it).

I laugh when people justify buying a new car on the basis of safety! Used cars don't have a to be beaters and the most important factor in car safety is the driver of the car! Drive carefully and defensively and the odds of you getting into a major life threatening car crash is very low.

We didn’t have any student loans but we had a car loan through the business, and a mortgage. the van was paid off and we bought a secondhand car when we had our first child on a personal loan. We paid it off as quickly as possible, and we are currently 22K ahead on our home loan with 117K owing. Hoping to have it paid off within the next 2 years. We’ve also renovated our laundry (extension) and kitchen in the last few years and have never gone without. God is good.

Very inspiring and would love to try and achieve that, but it would be almost impossible here in New Zealand. 😞 To buy a 4+ bedroom plus an office space will cost us well over $700,000 (to fit a family of almost 9)
With no deposit there’s no chance to even get into the market without God working a miracle.
But go you! Being debt free is a huge thing for us.

I recently sold my cottage and bought a smaller cottage and I payed off all my debts the peace and freedom I have now is amazing . I have learned to be content with what I have now. I know this has had an impact on my four boys as they can see how happy I am and they are saving for what they want rather than going into debt. I always quote Dave Ramsey's quote live today like no one else to live tomorrow like no one else .
