Being debt-free does not happen by accident! It does not happen because you got married without debt, it happens because you made it happen. So happy for you guys and looking forward to the day that we can say we are debt and mortgage free!

Yes. It's not "lucky" that you came into your marriage with no debt. It's because you both were smart and did not amass a bunch of debt. It's called choice. It's called decision. It's called responsible. It's not called luck.

If a mom wants to stay at home with her children, it is imperative to buy a house based on the price of the husband's salary ALONE. I was working when my husband and I first got married and even when I was pregnant, but then I quit to be at home with my kids. We always based our budget on only his salary because we knew we'd be losing my salary at some point. I think people today are really spoiled. They want super-expensive cars, houses, clothes and other "toys." Everything should be planned out in life. I have drilled that into my kids from the start. You will really avoid problems down the line.

    • @FarmhouseonBoone

Very good advice. I see too many women who want to stay home, but because of the amount of debt they took on pre-kids, they just can't.

Yes! I only worked about 5 months after we married, but since we figured everything based on one income all except a small amount set aside in checking to pay the expenses caused by me working my income went straight into a savings account (I was driving and hour each way to work so that gas and some lunches out with co-workers were paid from my salary). We started marriage with only a house mortgage.

    • @christineshah7330
      @christineshah7330 2 роки тому +2

Absolutely. We have always lived more simply than our friends and family and it enabled us to make the choices that are right for us. I could stay home, one of our boys had autism so that made staying home even more beneficial, and we eventually started our own business totally debt free and could only do that because we didn't have house, car or credit payments. Our things aren't as nice or new as some of our friends things, but I don't actually mind that....which sometimes surprises me. LOL I love nice things and pretty things, but I wouldn't trade the time with my boys and husband for those things and that is how it works. To get them we would have had to both work. My son with autism recently died unexpectedly in his sleep and I am overwhelmed with gratitude that my husband and I had so much time with him. Our lifestyle choices meant we were at everything he did, we spent a ton of time with him, we were super involved at school with him, and had ongoing hobbies and interests we shared with him...all instead of working more to have money for things. It is all so extremely clear in retrospect.

I'm sure I'll get backlash for this, but my husband is a mechanic. He works on a ton of cars! He will only buy a Honda or a Toyota. He says that those cars are built to a stand a lot. If taken care of they will last forever. Most of the modern cars are made to look good but they are not built well. Engines are crammed in which can cause more engine failure and more safety issues. Just my two cents. I also paid off our mortgage when we lived in our 770 square foot home with only a $45,000 mortgage payment. We have never made more than $26,000 a year from my husband's income. It can be done! I have five kids! I won't lie, it's hard and it means saying no to an awful lot. It meant getting up at 5 in the morning so that I could still be home and homeschool the kids and sometimes not getting to bed until 12. But it can be done

We have a toyota truck from 2009. We purchased it used. It is a solid truck. We bought it 3 years ago. We love Toyota!!! The dealship where we live was so good to my husband when he bought tires from them. Had no idea that you could get tires brand new at a discount. There was a name for it. I guess there was a vehicle that had a set of tires on them, that were used one time only. I guess they were put on a truck, then taken off right away. They can't sell them at full price when they are like that. These were really solid tires and a good brand. He got them for half of what they would have cost brand new.

Wonderful video and advice! I used to live in one of the most expensive cities in the US: Seattle. I became debt free while living there and raising 3 kids as a single mom. If I can do it, ANYONE can. I was 30k in debt after my divorce, and he wasn't paying child support (never did). I made it my goal: if I can't pay cash, I don't get it. I managed to become debt free, get my health and dental health in order and completely paid off, and save money besides. I now live in Europe (remarried) and though we haven't bought a house here, we are living minimally in a tiny apartment so we can save for a house. We never buy new cars (even if we had the extra money, I wouldn't - they lose value the minute you drive them off a new car lot!). We lived for 3 years without a car because we could easily rely on public transit in the city we live. When you keep the mindset to pay cash for everything, then life makes things happen that you couldn't have planned. It's a type of grace. So I don't buy people's excuses. It is possible, no matter where you live.

I just wanted to pick up the phone and call you after listening to this video. It was excellent. My husband and I live in Hawaii, one of the most expensive places on the globe and yet we are debt-free because we choose to rent an 800 ft.² cottage, we wash our own dishes, we have two older vehicles, but have a handsome savings account and owe no one, and it’s because we choose to live within our means. I completely agree with you that nothing is worth having if you have the burden of owing someone else. Americans are often just too spoiled and do not know how to say no to the things they want. Anyway, you & your husband have made some wise choices and I’m so happy for the way God has blessed your family.

My husband and I have done the same. We save and buy with cash, including our homes. We married later- I was 28 and he was 32. And, no- we were never previously married. It just took us a long time to find each other. 😉 Our personal thoughts, for ourselves, is that God gives us what He believes is enough and we respect that. We don't have the newest trends and don't update to keep up with the times. Our goal is function, clean, health and comfort. There is much peace when there is no financial stress. I know we have been blessed and I don't take that for granted. But, we have also worked hard. I completely understand why you come across as apologizing. I never tell people our choice to live debt free, but if a friend might make a comment and say something about our mortgage- I am honest and say we don't have one. I have had a friend get very angry at me and say It isn't fair I don't have bills like they do. I nicely reminded her that I also don't have the nice things that they have the bills for- that it is everyone's personal choice and neither one is wrong.

What I didn't realize was that my new husband believed that if you needed extra money, you borrow it - after having kids we ended up going deep in debt and still buying a house. Going into marriage debt free didn't mean we lived debt free. We spent money badly. THat is why we were in debt. Kudos to you. YOU are doing it right so please don't apologize. We also did a lot of do it yourself repairs and improvements on the house. Now in my sixties I am grateful to have no debt and have a healthy savings and investments. Although we have a lot of medical expenses as my husband is terminally ill, my priorities are to keep the savings topped up for this.

This is great. We are debt free (except for our house). I have been following Dave for a couple of years, and he's had a huge impact on us. I am from Australia, and our house prices are very different here. It is impossible to buy a house for cash, unless you live many hours away from a capital city. We bought a small un-renovated house in a great school zone, and we are now saving to renovate while paying extra off our mortgage. The house cost us about 7x our annual family income. Most families in this area have houses twice the size, and twice the mortgage debt. My husband and I have no interest in upgrading!

It's amazing to be debt free. We have been (not always), but we made up our minds when our children were small, if we couldn't pay cash, we didn't need it until we had the cash. We came through the recession in the 1980's w/that philosophy and it has served us well. So many people today think upon graduation from college they need to have a home that has everything they have ever dreamed of and and so on. We started out w/a "starter home" and when we bought our little homestead home, it was also a "fixer upper" that we did ourselves. My husband is very handy and can do anything, plumbing, wiring,, HVAC, carpentry, all of it. (he grew up on a farm). We did it the same way you did. NOW, after 52 years of marriage, we have our dream homestead...debt free. We raised our kids here and they helped to make this place a home too. We taught them early about money and how to live w/out debt and they all are married and debt free raising their families. This philosophy is one of the best gifts you can give your kids. You all are doing a fabulous job and I wish you wouldn't feel you have to apologize for the way you made your dream come true. Thanks for being real and being willing to share. It will be an inspiration to so many. Dave Ramsey is AWESOME!

Wonderful!!! So many people lack the knowledge it's possible to live debt free. Lack of knowledge and not willing to not having what they want when they want has destroyed marriages and torn families apart. Keep telling your story to all who will listen. It's then their decision.

This is great. In California we don’t get to have luxuries of debt free living since a 1500 sq ft house is just under a million dollars. However! In saying that, this is encouraging to me to loving debt free in all other parts of my life that are more controllable like credit cards and then saving to pay cash for a new car!

I live in so cal, my husband inherited a single wide mobile home from his grandparents. We have not been able to buy a house even thought we have a good amount saved and both work full time jobs(not min wage). Houses where we live are 500K for. a decent one or 350k for a beat up one which is about what we can afford. Summers are rough and just had a baby so we've outgrown this place, its served us well for 12 years but its sad that we are sort of stuck here.

I can’t believe how expensive the West Coast has become!! My husband and I used to live in Seattle.. there is no way we could ever afford a house there now..I don’t know how the average family can survive. I live in TN now and you can have such a great life here on a minimal income, plus it’s beautiful!

We lived in SoCal in an 1100sqft house we bought in 2011 for 70K. It was a total fixer upper (but livable since we had a VA loan and the standards are pretty strict) and my husband had to commute to LA everyday but it was totally worth it and it’s completely possible to find a house that isn’t ridiculously priced they just may need work and you might have to commute. We moved to the South and sold the house for 170K last year which is still lower than many areas in SoCal.

As a young person I did get in debt. It was a struggle and I lived pay to pay. Then I just got determined to get out of debt. The hardest part is owning up to how much debt you have. Tracking every penny and cutting things I didn’t need. I wanted to continue to stay home with my three children so I opened a home daycare. Every penny I made went on the debt. In five years I was finally out of it. It was such hard work and never got back into debt again. Once you have the freedom of your whole paycheck you truly find out your needs and your wants. You are an inspiration to all who watch your videos. ❤️

I'm a Dave Ramsey follower. I haven't got a morgage, I bought a new car and paid it off in 1.5 years. I am not totally debt free, all of the time, but I do owe very little and pay my bills off almost every month. I'm older and retired so I do treat myself on occasion but we are in great shape. We paid cash for a land and cruise trip in Alaska, last year and travel without debt as often as we like. I do encourage young people to follow the debt free teaching. Both of my sons have only a morgage and their cars are paid for so I'm pleased that they are on the right path. Thank you for sharing and for encouraging others to see that peace of mind is worth going without things that you don't really need until you can pay for them.

It is not easy but very rewarding. I was left as a single mom tragically when I was pregnant with my third child. Had been in a home we purchased for one year. I paid it Off Alone in 15 years. We did without a lot no cable. No eating out used clothes old cars. But then I helped my children buy cars when they were teenagers. Helped them with college . Student loans are a Choice people make. They need to take responsibility for that. I got my R.N. Degree thru a 2 year community college program when I was 30 years old. You don’t have to get a 4 year degree if you don’t want debt. It’s a choice! I drive a 21 year old car even though I can afford to pay cash for a new one. I sold resale items on eBay to help us pay off our 30 year mortgage in 10 years. We live modestly. It’s a choice. Young folks need to learn they can’t have it all. You are so wise! You deserve your success-it wasn’t handed to you. Blessings.

Unfortunately, my husband then wants to buy an new ( used) car, so we will probably start all over with his car. I also must add that we are both retired now, and live comfortably with just our social security monthly. I do what I can.

Living within your means was never taught us. We just paid off my husband’s student loans because a dear relative left an education trust to us. We both had student and credit debt when we got married. Our first home we had a nasty surprise and needed a new roof ASAP, it was leaking on top our fireplace, our bathroom and our bed. So we also have an HELOC as well.
Now- we can’t even afford to rent an apartment. We were willing to sell if it was better. We live in an area where renting is more expensive.
We are determined to get debt free. A friend turned us to Dave Ramsey as well. We are SUPER tight (sometime we literally barely can buy food, others we only have 29 cents to pay towards debt), but so far only Mortgage and HELOC left! Soooo exciting. It feels so liberating to get it gone. I never realized how STRESSFUL it felt to be in debt. It worried me so much more than I realized it till some of it was gone.
Congratulations you guys! Keep it up! And let’s continue to encourage our friends and family to strive for debt freedom!

My husband and I were pretty much of the same mindset When we married he had a small amount of debt and a small car loan. We weren’t making that much but we knocked out the CC debt in a couple of months then made double car payments and knocked out the car loan about 6 months later We built a good, basic 1400 sq foot house and moved in a few months before our first child was born. Since then we have raised three sons, sent them to college, bought several homes and are currently raising two of our grandchildren. We have no debt, no car payments, no mortgage and are those every day millionaires I am so proud of you and your husband Debt makes you a slave

You are absolutely right, prioritizing expenditures is vital. Yes, if you need a new roof, or gutters or broken windows, these must be replaced immediately for safety and security. But having an outdated kitchen, no doors on cupboards, flaking paper and paint (as long as not a danger to children) is not the end of the world.
Having the latest phones, the latest games and game machines, eating out every week, new cars every 3 years, vacations on ships or in lavish hotels are not a necessity.
Well done! You both should be very proud of what you have achieved at such a young age, but also being cognizant that not everyone has the same opportunities.
